Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi All,

Well, all the chickens seemed to have survived. DH is going to have to bring them water in the morning for a couple of days until I can find the heat plate for the water.

Night All.

Hey all! Wanted to post an update. We got 17-18 inches and wouldn't you know it drifted in some places too probably up to about 2.5-3 feet at the highest. Carrying out water to the flock by hand a few times a day. Hopefully a heated waterer is in the works but for now I'm not worried about it. The littles are going mad in the sun porch. I'm thinking I should let one out so it can tell all the others that they don't want to go out. Lol thanking God that the fuel oil truck managed to get to us on Friday before the snow storm as the tank was empty. The outside flock is of course freaked out by the snow. Saturday we had a couple birds fly out and land square in the biggest snow drift. Then stand stock still in fear one of our silver laced wyandottes in particular had to be rescued or I think she'd have stayed there until frozen solid. Lol almost up to her shoulders. It's supposed to warm up later this week hoping the snow melts so we can get a little more outdoor winterization done. Let's just say this storm caught us a little off guard. And my roses hydrangeas and blueberries haven't been covered yet hope they make it okay. Not sure if I should cover them while they're buried in this icky white stuff. We did manage to have some fun in the snow Friday night while better insulating the run, had a little snowball fight and made a big snowman. Saturday we had to go let DH2B's Dad's dog out and when we got there we realized one of their barn cats has a litter of maybe five week old kittens in a basket on the porch. Poor babies. Even though they had covered them with a couple blankets the snow had managed to fill most of the basket leaving nowhere in the basket snow free and dry as it melted against their little bodies as Mommy seems to be coming and going a lot. My guess is she's a first time Mom but they're all healthy ajd well and starting to get nourishment from food instead of Mom. Luckily there are aunts and such that are helping the mother with the kittens. We ran home and grabbed kitten food treats etc, and made what I dubbed the kitten igloo from heavy duty cardboard that we wrapped in garbage bags to keep it from getting wet and filled with shavings for warmth. Okay I'd better get some more shut eye just couldn't sleep for a bit my allergies are giving me fits.

Congrats to all the successful hunters!! Some beautiful bucks pictured here.
We have been so blessed in the meat department this year, with the meat birds and friends giving us a whole pig and a half beef, that I'm not really hunting much...the freezers are full already!

Jim, the mice sometimes get caught in the weasel boxes so I've thought of making a smaller version just for them. Maybe a shoe box with a small hole at each end and the bait in the middle. Just use the Victor mouse traps with the big yellow pans instead of the rat traps. I'll have to put one together this week to see if it works.

.I gave it some thought , too,, I have tons of wood.. I think I will make a box with a hole in the end, and just set it over the small trap after it is set..
Annie bought a D-Con trap that has a similar tunnel design..
It works great..

good 7 - 3 packer morning,
It wasn't pretty, but a win is a win,,..

I went out after dark to replenish Zeke's water.. He ran behind me and then around me before I could move,, his chain caught me just above the ankle and knocked me down hard.. I only got a little skin rubbed off from the chain, and didn't get hurt.. and speaking of didn't get, he didn't get any fresh water.. I was so mad I just went back into the house..

bowling today,, hope I don't work on my handicap too much ..

Hi All!

Well, went down to the coop about 10:30 p.m. to get something and was surprised by about a 30# opossum munching on the the chicken feed! I didn't want to leave and go back to the house for the rifle so I grabbed a garden rake. Only managed to chase it off. At least all the girls seemed OK. The wind and snow had knocked the 2x4 loose that held the netting over the run and it went through a window, guess that's how it got in. Son is coming over to fix things. No more going out at night without the riffle.

Night All.

Hope the luck keeps up for all the hunters. The deer started pouring into the meat market today so it's gonna be another busy week between both jobs. I never believed people got their own meat back but since I started working there i can honestly say we keep everything separated and you get your meat and only your meat back. Everything is kept and tagged separate. Have a good Tuesday everyone!

Glad to hear you guys keep things separate. My aunt had her deer processed one year and got back 2 hearts. I don't think that shop could make the same claim.

Yeah no doubt. I know a lot of places put it all together but I can say first hand not everyone

I agree one shoe doesn't fit all feet,, but we all know of at least one place or two that combines the meat ..
I am happy that your place is so careful,, your endorsement would entice me to take my deer there,,

when we used to have sausage made, we took it to a place in Hatley,, only we took it there in the middle of summer. ours was the only venison there, then..

we treat our deer like food as soon as it is shot, not like some people .. I saw a group drag a doe out of the woods behind a 4 wheeler.. there was about 100 feet of water next to the road,
they dragged that doe through the muddy water,, it was submerged most of the way.. now that's appetizing, eh ?

speaking of deer, nephew's friend hit another one last night with his truck.. this one is a buck with horns.. lots of damage to the truck.. (and to the deer) .. nephew gutted it and brought it to me,, I will hang it off the tractor bucket today and skin it.
If it is busted up too badly, I will make dog food packages out of it.. it looks like there is not a single unbroken bone in it..
maybe I should take it to Antigo and let CW87 and the guys have a go at it. LOL
