Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Evening to everyone...just made it home from the monthly meeting at Camp. It's only once a month, but seems more often than that. My how time flies by.

The deer must be getting hungry now with the deeper snow cover...they came out both in front and in back of the house about the same time before dusk, and a lot of them...good to see high numbers for next years hunt.

Yep, we have one of those ceramic pans too. Nothing has ever stuck in ours either. It's a must to use the silicone utensils to keep the surface scratch free. It makes the best omelets...I agree.

Nothing new here.....glad it didn't snow today.

Have Fun....bigz

I just came across an add for Ayam Cemani chicks on craigslist. I had to look them up and wow are they odd. Solid black inside and out and their eggs. Anyone ever raise them or hear of them before?

Just looked those up online, Jim, and they look a lot like a couple of my girls. And I get some huge eggs which it says they lay. Hmmmm......

My friend Robin pointed out that those chickens start laying at 4 months.. they already have a half a year of laying behind them and they really do not lay much after the second year.
I have 5 of those black stars. and they do lay nice large eggs. some of the eggs are as large as a double yolker, except they have only one yolk..
I did get one triple yolker a few weeks ago.. the first one I ever saw.. it had two normal sized yolks and a very tiny third one.

If you are just wanting eggs right away, a few of these chickens might be worth buying. In the mean time you (and I) could buy some young birds and raise them for replacements. that is my plan with the ones I have right now. they have almost two years to go as they just started laying this winter.

I think I will order some in March so they will start laying before fall.

I figure it will cost me about $7.oo/each including the purchase price to raise them to laying age.
So, like I did last year, I bought some POL's for $10.oo/each and I figured it was worth it. I skipped the labor part for $3.oo.
I should mention , I was a little desperate for eggs..

I am planning on getting a few each spring so that as I have to cull the older birds I still get eggs each year. I wish I could find some decent places to get the POL hens. I really lucked into my flock even though they were in rough shape when I got them. Free is an awesome price!

the next best thing to free is stolen, and then after that comes cheap..

It used to be that at the spring swaps, the Amish would have half grown red stars ..
they were always a good buy.
that place where they have the auction was another good place to get red stars..
I think it is near Amherst ?
the guy used to advertise on Craig's List, but I have not seen his notice for a long time..
I think the Amish used to supply the chickens to him.

maybe it would not be a bad venture to get a hundred or two and sell them as POL. If that place in G>Bay can get $15.oo for half worn out ones, why couldn't someone get that much for fresh ones ?

So random question does anyone on the thread have Cochin hatching eggs or sell chicks? Don't need to be really show quality just wondering. We were going to get some straight run through farm and fleet, but have decided to wait a year. But DH2B told me I could get a chick or two of my choice so I'm just wondering what is available.

Breeds I'm interested in include but aren't limited to:
Cochin
Ameracaunas
EE
Buckeyes

. okay well lets just say anything good in a mixed flock that includes bantams and silkies, is from a non-aggressive line, can free range, and lays at least somewhat decently

Well I'm brand new but I see we have some Wisconsin rep going! I dunno where to start. I raise black Jersey giants. Anyone have some of these? I'm always on the hunt for the biggest ones I can find. Thanks

Hi All!

Welcome to Cheeseheads hartland.

Well, 2nd son is home from his hog hunt. I was looking forward to a roast and/or some chops. Well, in he comes with a couple of packages of ribs and tenderloin and says the rest is in the truck uncut!
ep.gif
He brought me almost a whole 130 lb. hog!!! I guess when he shot this one it took out the shoulder on one side pretty bad, but the other 3 quarters were good. He got 3 between 130 and 150 lbs. his friend got one about 250 lbs. So, I got a bunch of nice ham roasts, ribs, loins, and meat for ground pork. I may try smoking the shoulder and shank. It's very lean, almost too lean and they didn't leave much outer fat on so I may have to bacon wrap the roasts .... too bad, lol. He says they want to try to go next year, if they do, I think I'll ask for more of the "left overs" (head, tongue, heart, etc.).

That's it for me..... Night All!

Fish Fry Friday again already....yippee fish.

I would love to go on a hog hunt sometime....sounds like a lot of fun, and I'm with you Cind on not wasting anything useful from the harvest...it just seems like the right way to do it.

Welcome hartland, glad you stopped by. I can't think of anyone off hand that is raising the giants....possible though someone on here is? Do you have problems with the single combs at all, in regards to frostbite?

Later...bigz
