I finally was able to let the chickens out. They prefer to stay in though!

I just have the rooster Eddie, who I just about got rid of, but he's kind of being nice. In fact, when it was cold I was concerned about getting eggs with him and all the hens in the henhouse. But he let me be, and gather what eggs there were, so things are going good with him.

I was wondering where you have been Jim! Good to see you are doing fine except for the puter. I was jumping through hoops to get on here as well. I needed to reset my password and now all is well.
True blessing that the extreme cold took a rest. The hens are back to their happy vocal selves again. I think they thought I was to blame for the extreme temps!
Avian influenza has been reported in Washburn county ... just sayin.
The flock had to be dispatched.

Hello my fellow Wisconsinites! I just joined because I was given a hunny-do from the wife to check on mild frostbite remedies and I re-stumbled on this website, finally registering. Lady from my township recycling center recommended this website a while back since we got our first (6) chickens back in June (Buff Orpington and Barred Rock). It's been fun and moreso rewarding once they started laying later in November. It's been a cold week for the girls and we have the coop fighting the outside temp by 10-13° so were pretty proud of that with lacking any heating, only blocking the Arctic winds with chopped tree segments and hay walls. But not enough to fight those previous -8°. Some got the paleness frostbite and I'm looking to get some petroleum and cover them, hoping it will insulate and warm them back up for repair. Either way, just sticking my head out and saying howdoyoudo. If you have any better recommendations, they're welcomed.

I didn't get any notifications so sorry for not replying back. I'll have to look at how it's set up.... We ended up not doing anything to the combs and just letting it run it's course, monitoring the weather. We think there was a little pecking going on from seeing some blood spots here and there in the coup. As you know it warmed back up and they're more lively and seem unaffected from anything. We pulled out 4 eggs yesterday from the 6 chickens we have. They lay more than we thought they would so far this season. I guess a laying chicken is a happy chicken, right?

I heard about the avian flu in Washburn county. Im right now having some sparrow troubles so ill have to get them away again.

What are they going for? We have a horse farm across the road that has a barn filled with them. They came here until I replaced all bird feeders with sunflower seeds. That makes cardinals, wrens, finches, chickadees, and several other kinds of wild birds happier too.

That got rid of them for a couple of years until the other day I found an old partial bag of bird seed in the basement. I thought I'd see if the chickens might like it so threw it in a pile near the coop. Big mistake! I wasn't even thinking. Now I have to try rake up what's left I guess.

To bad about the Packers, didnt expect them to make playoffs. They have some wrinkles and don't expect the klicker to be around next year. He had the most missed field goals of all the kickers this season. The way they were tackiling at times maybe put some those guys in with some greased up pigs in a pen for some tackling practice.Love needs experience looked like Farve that last play. Actually though I surprised watched the last 3 games looks like bright future stay healthy and all.
I have sparrows also, they go after the chicken feed and every year is a problem. I let the chickens free range, the birds fly in.

Assuming those pesky sparrows are getting into your coop for the food? Ours were never that daring but I read tacking a few strips of cloth to the top of the chicken door will keep the birds out. I assume my silkies would take a week to figure that out though.

Actually it's pretty common for me to see a sparrow in my Coop / run. And I'm sure they're going in for the food. But I leave that little door to the run open all the time, so I don't think there's much I can do about it. I guess I'm surprised to learn that sparrows cause avian flu or at least are carriers.
