In case you don't know, or somebody else reading this doesn't know, unless there are no other varieties of apple trees within a mile, growing seeds is quite a gamble. If pollen from one variety gets to the flower of another variety, then the seeds could produce a tree like either parent, or even something new.

Most trees sold are created by grafting a branch off a known variety to a rootstock. By doing it that way, they know what kind of fruit the new trees will produce.

Since they produce new trees by grafting, they tell you you need to get two varieties... Because an apple tree won't self-pollinate. If you get two trees of the same variety from one nursery, the odds are pretty high that they are branches off the same parent tree, and therefore won't pollinate each other.

To boil it all down, growing apple seeds is a gamble. You might get a good tree that is like its parent, and you might not. You might even get a tree that produces fruits that are terrible. On the other hand, you might get a tree that produces the best fruit you've ever eaten. And, it's a long experiment... It takes years to get from seed to a tree producing fruit.

See. I learn something new every day! Thanks Nemo.

I knew all of this... the seeds I have are from an orchard of Wolf River trees... so the odds of cross pollination are low; and I knew about the grafting too.

The original Wolf River Apple trees were grown from seed along the Wolf River right outside of Fremont WI; hence the name. The trees I obtained the seeds from are very OLD stock, so the odds of them being grafted trees is pretty low. I know the seeds have to be dried, then put into cold storage for a time before an attempt of sprouting the seeds can happen, and yes if there is cross polination you can get different varieties.... but that is all part of the game is it not? How would we ever get different varieties of apples if we did not experiment?

The kids were all impressed with the Hubbard squash; they asked me where we got the watermelon from!

What a difference a day makes! Yesterday I found a lump on my dog and had some issues at work. Today found out the dog has fatty tumors (thank God!), and the issues at work have been taken care of......

here's the latest on the bus driver, he can't be cited because the cops can't find him, the bus company will not give them his address. I have the report. but he is still driving the bus, morning and night

Good Evening.... glad to share the veggies with you guys.

I'm busy now cleaning up the gardens.

I've been a member of the Natonial Arbor Day Foundation for 30 years. They have great deals on apple trees. I've bought different species from them. They all grow well. The two 3 footers I planted this spring, are over 6 feet tall now with only one growing season.
They recommend what trees to buy for pollinators, depending on what your planting. They are about 1/3 the cost of commercial nursery stock.

Talk later. I'm watching the Packers try to beat the Vikings....

Can the police be waiting for him at your house? You know what time he will be arriving so they could be waiting for him....

I hate it when people of position pull crap like this.... go over their heads to the City Attn. if you have to. I had to do that once when my neighbor's dogs were trying to break INTO my house and the cop that responded would not issue any citations. I had an 18 mo. old baby in the house those dogs could have attacked if they had made it in. Thank goodness the Pastor was a witness; it was nice to have back-up going in and crabbing the the City Attorney about how the cop stood there like a big 'duh' and did nothing..... The neighbors ended up with a $200 ticket for dogs roaming at large....

I hope they get him....

It's illegal to not hand over information that is vital to an open case. It's actually can be ruled a felony. The bus garage guy could face charges too. I believe you could even call it "aiding and abeding". (spelling sorry) I, myself, would go right down to the mayor's office and show that video and police reports and have it brought up at the city council about how nothing it getting done. Sometimes you gotta take the bull by the horns. That's what I would do.

Went to the district, (the head Man), told me the problem will be solved by Wed afternoon, either a taxi for my DD or a new driver. will see, I think next will be the local TV stations, plus the guy was driving yet tonight.
