Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

BCC those are some beautiful marans...and smart too, it was a windy one. My toupee flew off three times until I stapled it down tight.

I picked up more scrap wood in really good shape I am going to have the nicest nesting boxes on the block...I am still assessing how to divy up all the space what a nice problem to have. As soon as I have the nesting boxes up, the roosts in place, the waterers and feeders all set, the doors secure, and the straw down on the floor my month old chicks will be spending their days if not their nights in the coop...I'm contemplating putting some brooder lights up and just leaving them in there. We shall see, it's supposed to get colder and wetter this week.

Took the dogs for a long walk tonight and it's still nice and warm...man, the farm smells good. Nothing like turned earth in the early spring. The ponds have their usual spring algae bloom and our water dog loves to roll in that stuff. He's sleeping in the back foyer tonight, God bless him.

Ha hahhhh, I used to work at a small dairy just down the road from there when I went to Point. Yes, very teeny tiny town, but the CHEESE factory - yum!! Fresh curds and ice cream

I was a very GOOD girl at the Wega swap; the only things I bought were books! That $30 peacock was tempting though....

Working on the house again today and going to try and get a coat of stain on the swingset before it rains! Everyone enjoy the day!

My first swap of the year is Elkhorn. Im so excited!
What is everyone bringing?
I wont be bringing anything, but am looking to spend some moolah.
Im on the look out for silkies, Oegb, and well basically anything cute and fuzzy!

Good Afternoon All...apc don't forget the empty cages. Your gonna need something to carry home what you spend all your moolah on....

BBCB I'm jelious of all your space...that's 900 sq ft. I like to provide 10 sq ft per bird. That's room for 90 chickens, giving them plenty of stressless space.
I would definitely hang a brooder lamp 18" from the floor out there. The peeps can move close or away as needed. You surely don't want to risk them getting chilled at this point.

Glad to hear everyone is having fun.

Ha! Mom would beat me to death with whatever she could get her hands on if I showed up with another chick at this point. It's become a serious bone of contention...but having said that, I'm really interested in finding some BCMs or Welsummers...! Once they're out of the house and in the coop tucked away at the farthest reaches of the barn it will be less stressful. But having 22 chicks in two brooders in our sunroom immediately adjacent to the kitchen is making the chicken thing a bigger deal than it really is.

So, I will be putting at least one brooder light out there, if not two. It's a little drafty in the coop, but tomorrow I'm spending the day getting it prepared and I'll have a nice space for them that should be tolerable no matter the weather outside. I'll be posting pics tomorrow night.

Nice out today...the rooster that we kept was kind enough to wake us up at 6 am this morning and got our Irish Setter girl going-she's not sure which way to look first

in fact she'll sit in one spot all day to watch the chickens if we let her!

Here is a picture of the rooster-

Ok I'll ask you guys. Have you guys ever had a broodie pull out all her chest feathers to the point of bleeding? Murry has and I'm alittle concerned. It looks better today than it did last night and I don't think she has plucked anymore. I gave her a handful of boss for the protein and extra hay for warmth. I noticed that she would try to pull the hay over her when I would push it up around her. Is she cold? I guess I just want her to be comfortable and not in pain. Thanks all!

you have an intense broody, yes they will do it, it happens because the feathers she pulled where not fully grown in so still had blood in them in, Some hens will throw bedding on themselves even when just finished laying an egg.
