Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I forgot to answer that question! I got them from Keith LeGrande (I'm not sure if I spelled his last name right...), his username is alwayscochins here on BYC, and he got three of these birds directly from Judy Gantt (she's the #1 Cochins International Master Breeder in the Bantam Mottled variety right now, #4 in Blacks, and #2 in Whites)...one of the Blue Mottled hens was directly from Jamie Matts (again, if you're not familiar with him, he's one of the top 3 or 4 names in Cochins), and then there were, I believe, 4 birds that he raised himself. I have it all written down in a binder, I just don't know where the darned thing is at the moment. In any event, these birds aren't just pretty. They're some of the best. I mostly got them because they're pretty though!

I don't know about having pedigree on the property, you know who will be the first to get eaten if a prediator would come around. My luck anyway.

No seriously they are some of the prettiest cochins I've seen in awhile and come spring or fall or whenever, if you have chicks I would love to buy some. I showed my DD7 the pictures and she said that they are a must have. I love that she is just as into chickens as me. Terri- I'm sooo taking you if/when I take those chicks to DrH. He doesn't even know he ordered any.
big_smile.png
What a road trip that would be. First I have to make sure they hatch out and they are penciled. Well have to clean the house today and my girlfriend is coming over to pick up the last two chicks. Then I will really have a empty nest.
sad.png
Oh well it will fill up soon enough. Hey Terri- you have a assortment of birds, do you keep you gamebirds and chickens together? Have you had any problems? I really want those quail, but am worried about them getting something from my chickens. This is what happens when I read to much.

DrH) Haha, aren't our hopes and dreams funny? I know, we are a little wacked, but if we both want it I believe we'll be able to come close to what we are thinkin! It won't happen right away of course, but patience is important

.

Why you say that about the meaties? Cause they stink? Or cause they got so big and you still have some left over? We plan on trying to figure out what we will eat in 8 weeks (and the SIL and BIL, they want some too!), so when we butcher, we have enough to last us for then next set to grow out. Then in September we will take that times how ever many months we don't want to deal with fat chickens in the snow! lol. We also don't plan on having them with other chickens, we plan on tractoring them. So, they wouldn't be around my egg layers. Does that sound good?

FBG) I also thought it was a boy, maybe its the chicken's legs that looks like a....*ahem*

After DS went down to bed I went and cleaned the kitchen to sparkling clean! DH came in to our room and said I did an "awesome" job. Thanks DH, now please keep it clean! lol. I could probably get off BYC, and do the same cleaning to the dining room. But I am going to wait until DH is up so I can take a shower!

Me and DH are going nursery shopping tomorrow. We are just gonna hop a bunch of them to see if we can find some good deals on things we wanted this year, but didn't get. Why pay full price in spring, when we can get it in fall? We did this with our elderberry hedge. We bought them from steins for $5 a piece (usually 30 bucks a plant) and they looked terrible. Like little twigs. But, we got a 2-year guarantee, so why not? Every single one lived and are lush and beautiful this year. Easily triple the size we bought them at! I am going to look for fruit trees, grape vines, and maybe blueberry plants, depending how cheapo they are.

I really wish we could have chickens right now

Booo.

Becky NO NO NO NO No more chicks no room at the inn. Even though I'd love some! Maybe another coop next year. You were supposed to come to get chicks remember. When I read that I freaked at first. But if you and TO want to do a road trip your welcome anytime! You all are! Got all my running done. Stopped the BFF's and made a haul. Got a head of cabbage, celery, cherry maters, banana peppers, and close to 2 ice cream pails of jalapenos. I asked why he didn't want the jalapenos he said he doesn't eat them. I said why are you growing them then, he said for me. What a guy! So if I go pick beans I'll be a lot busier than I want to be. Actually feel like a nap.

Dr HaHa - Thanks, but our bean plants are producing more than we need right now too! We'll actually probably be on our way back from the State Fair on Sunday - my sister's 4-H group, the Lyndon Pioneers, made it to State in Performance Arts with a play that they performed, so we're leaving late on Thursday and staying down there for the weekend for all her dress rehearsals and performances! I'll be bringing the laptop along so I can keep up with all of you!

EDIT: By the way, I can't believe those eggs of yours are so close to hatching already! That duck of mine is still sitting on her eggs - I think they'll be hatching within a week or so now. If they do, I'm serious, if any of you want ducklings, you have have them for FREE. Otherwise, I'll let them go on CL for $2 each or something. I can't handle another 10 ducklings (I snuck a peek at her eggs yesterday, and she has 11 alive and getting close to hatching in there). They'll be small, and great egg-layers. They might even lay blue eggs, with the Hookbill as their daddy...

AND, if any of you are interested in helping to preserve a duck breed that's just coming back from the verge of extinction, I'm looking at selling my entire starter flock of Stanbridge Whites, along with a short waiting list of people wanting eggs and/or ducklings in the spring. They're bigger than all the other breeds I keep, and with college starting up again in just another month now, they're too much. You can e-mail me if you want to talk about it - I just want them to go to someone who'll breed them (carefully - the breed is so rare, it's rather inbred) and spread the word about them. They're great - I just have to prioritize, and if I have to pick one rare, heritage duck breed to focus on, it's my Hookbills.

Raiquee - That's the same thing we do to get all our fruit trees and perennial flowers - just wait until the end of the season when they're cheap! Our apple and pear trees looked like crap when we got them too, but the apples were producing bags of fruit the very next year.

Raiquee quite the contrary I think it's great for young people to want a life like that. I didn't have any problems with the meaties it was my own stupidity I raised them together with my layers. Last year was my first year with chickens. I learned a lot and am continuing to do so, I think. It took awhile for the layers to settle down after the meaties were butchered.

OK is this picture better. And you wonder why people think people from Wisconsin are perverted rednecks lol
tongue.png
I can see what you might have meant

Tell you what DrH- will trade this coming spring. I'll give you some you give me some. Don't freak out, I wouldn't do that to you, just teasing you alittle. I'm just hoping that my girl is sitting on all girls in those eggs. So far my hatchs have been that way, but you never know there could be 6 boys there.
tongue.png
Terri and I will have to plan a trip up there. Maybe go horse camping in your area and a side trip over by you. We will have to talk. Oh Annarie if I could only figure out how to keep ducks. So far when I have tried it hasn't worked out. Last year when I had call ducks, they were so unsocial and flew south for the winter when they escaped one day. Very sad. Oh well maybe I will have to figure out a better plan.

I thought everyone was going crazy! I was catching up on reading when I came across the conversation about the avatar...... I thought TO was going crazy saying that those ducks were a "boy" in only shoes..........

I quickly caught on. talk later

Raimnel no one said you weren't crazy!

Raiquee the only thing i have to say about Wi. people being perverted rednecks is. SO! Bec I knew that. Sounds like a plan we'll swap chicks next spring. The chicks are at least 3/4 the size of thens and mingling and starting to stand up to them. It's fun to watch. There getting so pretty! Think some penciled would look good in the pack. Just got the jalapenos finished. I picked a younger celery plant this time but it's still tough and bitter. Need some celery salt to make cole slaw. L is going to Rapids after work and doing some shopping so will make it tomorrow. Eyeballing the banana peppers maybe can them then pick beans or visa versa. Still want a nap.

I hope I didnt insult you (or your daughter) FBGs! I laughed so hard when I saw your new Avatar....then I read about it really being your daughter and I felt bad! I do have a pic like that of my son...and he isnt holding a chicken either! I have a funny story; when we first moved to the farm my kids always ran around naked. I think it was because I was potty training my son and it is just easier that way...so my daughter (4) decided that she would be naked too. She cam running into the house one afternoon yelling that the geese were after my son...well he almost became a girl that day because they were only after one part of him!
gig.gif
After that they at least wore underwear! Thanks for the memory!
I am not really sure but I think all Romas are bred to be determinate DrH. They do that because most people that grow them do so for canning and sauce making purposes and you want them all ripe at pretty much the same time. That is what I am looking to do with mine this week some time--IF ONLY I HAD AIR CONDITIONING!!!! I bought a little personal fan this morning at Dollar Gen and it is hanging next to me keeping me alive! My ceiling fan seems to have burned out in this room!
Raiquee--we used to have a contest here (well it was really only me in the contest) at dinner time. It was to see how much food we were eating that we grew here on the farm. There were a few nights that 100% of our food came from right here! THat was when I was milking my goats...dont to that any more though...hey about you getting that cow someday...I have read that the average cow produces way more milk that the average family can consume. So youhave two choices as I see it: move close to me, so we can share the milk, or have about 12 more kids so you wont be the average family! With all that work to do you will probably need the extra kids! Great for your son that he threw away his stuff after eating! Dont discourage him!

Leaving you with some desert for tonight...
