Terri - The first duckling to hatch yesterday
tried to follow momma outside to eat this morning, but it got lost, and that's when I took them. The rest of the eggs under her are all over the place in development - some that are due yet this week, some that need 2 weeks yet (she was stealing the fresh eggs that the other ducks in the pen were laying
after she'd started sitting)...I want her to finish off as many of them as she can, and I'm thinking there'll still be hatching going on under her until this weekend. She was stealing an egg or two a day for awhile, so there are eggs due tomorrow, an egg or two due the next day, etc. for at least a week or two yet, or until I get sick of it and take the remaining eggs away. It's not a nice, neat, "normal" hatch.
But, no - I'm got going to give them back to her, not this year. Maybe, if I get a Khaki drake and she hatches some pure babies next year I'll let her raise them and add some of her daughters to the flock. For now, I have the two oldest all set up, taught them to eat and drink, and they're having a blast dabbling around trying to get chick crumbles from the bottom of their waterer right now. I have a perpetual brooder set up, always ready to go, so it's no extra work for me.
friskebluegills expressed an interest in taking them off my hands - just need to wait a few days here and see how many of them end up hatching in a timely fashion.
EDIT: And I'm almost finished growing out my Indian Runners for the year and picking my "keepers". I hatched out too many drakes, so I'll have 3 gorgeous bachelors looking for a home!
On another note - it's too hot and sticky out!
Oh, and all the foster kittens did great in surgery last Friday, and they're all recovered and up for adoption now. They look so big! The next litter is a momma cat and 6 kittens, and we can go pick them up anytime this week! Just have to get the room all cleaned up and disinfected before we bring the little ones home.
