Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hey everyone,

So one of my roosters started crowing. It only took him 18 weeks but he wanted to take his time. The funny thing is how pathetic his crow is. He gets all puffed up and raises his head all high and then it sounds like this terrible one note howl. Also he only crows when I come down by them. Otherwise he doesn't make a sound. I am STILL waiting to get my first egg though. My I have three 22 week old Buff Orpingtons, two 20 week EEs, three 18 week EEs, and a 18 week Brown Leghorn, but still no eggs from any of them.

I would have thought one of them would be laying by now. Also I have 4 female Coturnix Quail that are 8 weeks old and still now eggs. URGH!! I have a house full of hold-outs. I just really want my hens to start laying so I can start breeding. I have a huge list of people wanting mixed breed eggs/chicks but no one wants the purebred ones.

I don't get it. You would think the purebreds would be on higher demand. I think it is because most of the demand here is farmers that just want a good laying barnyard mix and don't want anything fancy. Who knows.

Cindlady! Glad you found us, I grew up in that part of the state-over in the general area of the Dover Inn if you are firmilar with that.

Yep, know right where it is, looked at a place to buy (well,2 places) in the area. Love where we are though, when we were looking for a place to buy one of the top 5 things I wanted was a place to raise chickens! I grew up between 2 places that had chickens and my uncle had chickens. My first husbands family had chickens! I spent many an hour in chicken coops and when I had to start buying eggs from the store.... they didn't seem like REAL eggs. No more! LOL

Good Morning All! otonoh did you get my pm? Just wondering, dug everything out and remembered that I threw some of the weird feeders or waterers away, they were mid evil looking. But still have a good collection of both for you to peruse. Cind can't beat home grown eggs or meat or veggies. Goth you should be getting eggs any day I would think. My slw's didn't start laying till a lot later than I thought they would. Btwo the second generation red sex link hasn't layed now for 2 days and am only getting 5 a day now from the 11. But their sooo good! Next warm spell I'm gonna clean out the deep litter from the coop noticed it's starting to smell and a lot of the kids want to roost in the wood shed. Will make them a warm treat this morning. cfc I saw that too, it just makes me sick! bl4 I used 2 thermometers to adjust my bator, that's about as scientific as I get. The BFF gets mad at me when we build something cause the machinist kicks in and everything is measured and cut to the exact size. He uses the 11" and 3 little lines method, drives me nuts! Have a good one!

Dr.haha. Yes I did. I will give you a call. Sometime today. Gotta figure out my schedule. Thanks

Good morning everyone, Cind glad you found us. I know there is nothin like your own eggs. Hey Doc I see you want to clean the coop. I just seen they are talkin about a big cool down around jan.17

I was hopeing for some warmer weather to clean also. They are talking -20 to -50 I hope that's not correct. Picked up eggs this morn and I think I may have a hen laying at night cause there is a frozen one by 7:30 almost every morning. I am hatching a batch of eggs and there will be extras

if anyone is interested. Also have some turkeys that are from last year that have to go one hen and two toms.
Stay warm and keep happy

the only coop here that has heat is the building with the Incubator, heat in your coop is not a good thing, FIRE, I has seen the result of heat bulbs for winter heat, not good, the heat I'm using is a 40,000 but bullet heater, with a thermostat set at 50 degrees, i do have insulation around the 'bator, or i would have to have the temp. up to 60-65.

welcome to every one new

I haven't been able to keep up. we are planning a poultry workshop on March 26 at the Winnebago co fair grounds, Tyler, Purely Poultry, is going to participate.

on the non heated coop thought, I got some chickens combs that have white tips. I assume the start of frost bite? How do we avoid frost bite? and if you say vasoline, How on earth do you tackle them ALL down to vasoline them? what if the combs are blackening (the tips) is this going to KILL them? or just make their combs look horrible?

ontonoh didn't mean to come across as being pushy, sorry if I did. Call, we'll talk.

Think I spend more time looking for things to do than doing the things I should be doing. cp the only thing I can say about the -20/-50 is SHUT UP!

BCC Give us a reminder when the time draws near might want to get the heck out of the house by then, in fact I know we will. It would be fun to see you, Tyler, and anyone else that might show up.

Hey folks, was visiting the parents Christmas through New Year, and it has taken me almost a week to catch up to you chatty Cathys and Charlies! Glad to see we got some new faces, welcome!

I was laughing at the toilet jargon, until DH was doing his own rendition yesterday

So I had 2 infants and a tyke to care for allllll day, LOL! Now today he feels ok, but I have a sore throat, poo. Gonna try to knock it out with bone broth from our homegrown chicken.

Raimnel, I wait to put vaseline on my big-comb birds until they are roosting. It is mission impossible to catch the Anconas otherwise. So far their only redeeming quality is they're pretty; they better kick the eggs in gear this spring. Those little hens have such attitudes - howl and peck me when I try to get their eggs, little beasts.

Cp, if you're hatching Wyandottes in spring, let me know. You have blues, right? Just need to build some more facilities first

Someone said there was a Delaware breeder around Green Bay, is that right? Need some more of those
