Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I had a bunch of goose fat to render one time.. I took our electric waffle iron and filled it as full of fat as I could get in there and still close the top.. tilted the waffle iron to one corner and drained the fat into a kettle as it cooked..

I didn't know I had so much moisture in me.. It's a good thing Ihave a nose or I would have drowned myself by now..

going to drink a couple of glasses of moisture and go to bed early tonight.. took an antihistimine (sp) and it took a couple of hours to kick in, then lasted only a couple of hours and then went a couple of hours before I can take the next one??.. and I am supposed to take one only every 8 hours ? I have to admit those couple of hours in the middle were nice..

I wash all of my eggs.. eating ones and hatching ones.. I run my incubators continuously for months on end without stopping to disinfect them....

Wow, I tried to keep up with everyone.... allot happen. I hope everyone weathered the storm OK, has everyone checked in? We didn't do bad here at all... about 20 min. of real, bad scary stuff but no big damage, just a few limbs down.

Well, the big girls are all together. They do fine outside with only minor tiffs but inside little miss "fuzzy foot" is being a b!tch! The first night she tried keeping the whole 8' roost to herself! I have more roost space but she wanted the big one! GRRRR She also goes after the other hens. OK, she wants to be Queen of the hen house but she has to learn to play nice too!
wink.png
The youngin's I had to but in the big quarantine coop because they seemed to be terrorized by the "Big Girls". They better all get along soon... I need the room! Rose, one of my hens didn't come to roost tonight.
sad.png
She didn't come one other night but was strutting around the yard at the crack of dawn, sure would like to know where she goes! Hope she's alright
hmm.png
I wonder if she didn't come to roost because of "fuzzy foot". If she gets to be too much of a problem I'll separate her for a couple of weeks. Sure hope Rose comes home.

Good Morning All! The water actually went down a little last night!
ya.gif
But will be running the gas pump all day for the crawlspace. 6" from the floor joists. I'm exhausted and I just got up.
th.gif
Enough of that! Glad you got your chicks down TO! I was worried. Cind think Miss Fuzzy Foot will get put in her place soon. Jim hope your feeling better soon. Bet the waffle iron method was a mess.
lol.png
Raimnel Well we have 2 stop lights! And a Mickey D's and a Subway. If it wasn't for the mill they wouldn't be here including the stoplights. Think it's around 2,700 people? PM me if your heading this way would love to see ya! Bring your knee boots. LOL'd at playing with your food! Glad everyone that has checked in is OK! But trying to think of who all hasn't checked in. Amy hope you get your rendering done to enjoy that crust.
droolin.gif
Goth hope your feeling better too! Are your hens penned or free ranging? If their out then they've got nests somewhere. kee I think your shoes are cool but have to agree with Amy, that would drive me nuts-er! Cool about TO getting eggs to you for the kids! Yes she's a keeper!
hugs.gif
Better go check the gas level on the pump. Enjoy the sunshine!

Good morning! All this talk about pie crust! I myst have been thinking about it too cause that is the chapter I turned to in my new GF cookbook last night! Subliminal? So I have several recipes to try; of course none call for lard but I will make them with it anyhow. Oil in pie crust just doesnt sound too good to me...yeah I know oil IS melted lard (kinda) but there is just something about it...took a look at my rhubarb the other day--nothing yet! Probably when I get home from work it will be ready to pick!
lau.gif
Rhubarb is a fast grower for sure! Hmmm--I believe I have some raspberries in the freezer from last year.....come on warm weather!
THe hen with 2 babies is taking them all over the yard and into my flower beds. Everything in=s nice and scratched up and ready for planting! THanks hen! Unfortunately it looks like I will have to put a fence back up around that salad garden...it is her favorite spot to scratch! I have to get my onion sets in there! (I really only want to plant ONCE)
In other species news...the baby pigeons are fledged and have lost all their yellow fluff off their heads. Mom is already on eggs for 5 days I think! The adults are so pretty but the babies look just like park pigeons to me! I was hoping for some neat coloring! Guess I better read up on pigeon genetics. The lambs are growing like mad and will be let out this week to graze a little. The call ducks from BL4 are so funny! They can come out and free range during the day but I have to put them in at night. Maybe they are not as "smart" as chickens? They have a nest of 4 eggs last count but no more neat green ones like the very first one.

My cold is officially GONE!

but now DH is sniffing and coughing

Well--gotta get some chores done before work...man that sounds dumb! Have a fantastic day everyone! Terri O

(PS) PMed you Cin.

fm Peatwo IS his fathers son!!!! I just had the neatest moment with him. I just showed L yesterday how he comes to me when I call him. I sat down at the picnic table after getting the water flowing as best I can and called him . He came like normal I sat there talking to him and pretty soon he was letting me touch him without being picked up. After awhile of that I picked him up and set him on my leg without being held. We sat and talked while he got petted. 15 minutes plus!!!! It was so fricken cool!!!!! It really really made my day/ month/ year! I owe fm soo much for Peaches! What joy!

Terri- did you ever talk to your neighbor about a call hen for me?
Glad to know your cold is gone.
My broodie silkie may be sharing eggs with a polish hen, She seemed to say "mine mine mine!".. and then yesterday.. eh..
hu.gif
.. grrr.. so lets HOPE she stays broodie!

And now my current land lord is driving me nuts. She asked my DH when we could be out.. so today I texted her to pin her down on the lease, and moving out early vs having to pay May rent, and her not letting
us out of our lease early. And if she has rented the house. It is no longer on the CL, so I am hopeful. BUT...I am not moving all my stuff early, if I have to pay May rent.. I aint moving all my stuff out and won't surrender the house if I have to pay HER rent in May.
She wouldn't say via text but said she would send an email.. which means she is gonna try to have her cake and eat it too!!!. IE make us pay rent in May, and rent it to a new person in May..
I think what she is charging for rent to the new renters is ridiculous, 25 more than what she is charging us, so close to 750 a month for a tiny house... like one of those eco friendly houses that you can fit on the back of a large trailer or the ones that used to be container boxes... This house is about that big.
Sooo the email should be interesting.

Glad to hear that the damage missed most people and that Dr. H's sump pumps are keeping the water down...
Doc.. have you thought of alternatives to prevent those sleepless nights and potential flood damage? Could you have the property re-graded OR a large drain pipe so the water is funneled through that vs under your floor
joists... Just a thought.

Well off to go work horses and check email..
Carol

All this lard talk: DrH pie crust is made and chillin in the fridge waiting to become a cherry, lemon and maybe banana cream pies....

TO, I think you will have to 'teach' those ducks to go inside at night. Maybe take a plastic container and shake some of those mealworms in there (do it a few times during the day so they know what you are doing) and then just lead them in and give them the treat. Pretty soon they should be putting themselves away expecting the goodies! (Mine come running when they hear the plastic container shake....)

Off for lunch!

Hey guys!

I've been so busy lately with house-remodeling and wedding-planning...but I'm really, REALLY going to make an effort to keep up with this thread from now on!

I had 3 Mille Fleur Cochin chicks hatch last week. Will and I are betting on the sex ratio we're going to end up with - we both think we have a little 2 female, 1 male trio - but we disagree on which one the little rooster is! Here they are just after I took them out of the 'bator - I think that the little Wheaten one is a boy, and the Grey and Columbian patterned ones are girls...Will thinks the Grey one is a boy...but that's the one that's feathering in the FASTEST!

The quail are nearly all grown up and we can feather-sex the browns now, so we're going to start sorting those into breeding pens soon.

And, I HAVE CALL DUCKLINGS HATCHING!!!
wee.gif

I noticed the first pip about an hour ago - it's Day 26, so they're right on time for bantam ducks. I'm expecting the first baby by tomorrow!
celebrate.gif

I can't wait to see what colors they are! I'm sort of hoping for Black Bibbeds and Pieds. I know then mom has the genetics to produce those. But, we'll see! I'll post pictures when they hatch! This is the beginning of a LOT of Call hatches - I've been putting a batch or two of their eggs in every week for the past month and they're ALL developing, so I have a Call hatch due every week from here on out!
