Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

In four more weeks, we will process the ones I don't sell at a swap I'm planing on taking them to. A&M's are a meat quail designed to be a bigger (for quail) meat bird. They are ready to process at 7 weeks of age.
Dh is trying to convince me to keep a rooster and a couple of hens, but I'm dragging my feet on the matter. They have been an experience, and they really are quite silly. They love to stretch out and "die", then pop up from a "dead" nap to race off and eat, drink, or be generally pesty to another quail. I want to see how they process out and taste before I go all out and breed them. I actually would like to incubate some more of them, then keep some for breeders.

Mustlovepeeps adorable picture of the rir. Well snowed most afternoon, I finished the paneling, Had to get a nap in when I got cold. Here are the recent improvements.

Aww - they look just like the little beasties I have out in the garage! I have around 40 mixed Coturnix (well, they're all pure Jumbo Browns, Texas A & M's, and Tibetans - but I have a mixture of them all in one pen) a bit older than yours. Ours are crowing and breeding now - no eggs yet. I'm expecting some eggs soon though!

Oh - the spots have nothing to do with gender. With the Texas A & M's, the only way to sex them is to listen for the males to crow, or vent sex them.

If you see them mating, the one doing the mounting is a male, but the one being mounted could either be a female or a low-ranking male. That's all I've learned about sexing quail so far. My Jumbo Browns have their adult plumage in now and are sexable by color, and I have a LOT of boys!

Will wants to breed a bunch, slaughter them, and have his grandmother prepare stuffed, bacon-wrapped quail at our wedding in September. I dunno if I can eat them now, after raising them and watching them have so much fun dustbathing and flittering around like looney toons.

ANYWAYS - got home from work tonight, checked on the chicks and ducklings in the brooder, and BOTH heat lamps had gone out! It's a good thing I'm brooding the slightly older Cochin chicks with the new Call ducklings, because they were all snuggled up together keeping one another warm. I imagine I would have lost the Call ducklings if they hadn't had the extra warmth of the chicks - the brooder's in the basement, and it's COLD down there. I have no idea how long they were without the heat - I was at work all day and Will was away, playing paintball with some buddies...but they were very lethargic and cold when I found them. The ducklings were both in the middle surrounded by the chicks and they looked fine, but I was really worried about one of the chicks. His eyes were open, but he wouldn't move at all!
sad.png
But I got the heat back on them quick and everyone looks happy now; the ducklings are chasing the chicks around, pulling on their rapidly developing wing feathers, and all is right in their little world.

Well, here goes again....

Hurley.... the snakes a beautiful! We had a pet store yeas ago and had lots of snakes and reptiles. I think for every 5 we sold we wound up keeping 1!
lol.png
Our absolutely, favorite snake was Ralph.... an eastern fox snake. Not the prettiest snake in the world, but perhaps the most "charming"!!!
wink.png
This snake LOVED attention! On the rare times he got out he would go looking for people! He was the snake we would use to introduce people who were "snake phobic" to the world of snakes! He won many, many people over! We would also take him to schools (with some others) for pet care talks.

MLH... You should enter that pic. for "chicken of the week"!

Jim... too bad about that roo:( ...... So, no chicks unless it's 50* outside..... I'll remember that....
wink.png
LOL

otonoh..... so, paint and fuzz butts tomorow.... when are you putting on the addition? You know you will

Well, the girls were in and out all day trying to doge the rain and snow and whatever else was falling from the icky sky! It's so cute watching the youngin's spreading their wings and jumping around!
The weather better hold up long enough to finish the remodel of the coop! Too hard to work with the ladies running in all the time.

Good cold morning everyone.
Well today may be the big day, or not. Got the brooder all set up, just add chicks, food and water, I got the temperature to a nice steady 95 degrees.
gotta go heat up the coop so I can paint later, Terri and Jim haven't gotten back to me on the paint color, but Jim requested a nice purple shag carpet for his half.

We shall see, as for the basement, no money, especially after the pool guys come over and put in a pool for the chickens.

I imagine Dr Ha Ha, pulled an all nighter with the eggs , hope he got some sleep

well off to walk the dogs, Sweetfolly glad the ducklings are ok

Good Morning Everyone! Well sort of. The wind is helping dry things up in time for the wet week ahead.

Yup it's been a long night and morning. No sign of life in the bator yet so I'm already second guessing myself. Don't remember the date I put them in the bator but marked the hatch date. Maybe I'm off a day? Maybe I did something wrong? Maybe I'm an idiot.

Mellow, Mellow! My neck is killing me. Should go out and cut some wood but that's not gonna happen. ontonoh thinking more like Wed. might work. Nice lookin coop! Looks like the same lenoleum that I put in the bathroom. MLH I agree you gotta send the chick pic in! That's way too cute! Thanks Bigz! Your right a watched pot eh? S"J" it's Laura's cat!

She's so fat that if I even tried to pick her up by the tail it would come right off!
gig.gif
Gotta go check again. There's no way that they didn't make it. It's just a time thing. Come on! Come on!

Dr. Ha ha, I am sure things are fine, earlier you said noon on Sunday, I don't remember the day either but I am sure some will be late. Fingers crossed for both of us.

Hope something like that comes along once I'm up there.. doesn't sound to unreasonable (and would save me a BUNCH of work and time, which is always a good thing!)

Wisco sorry to hear your losing your chickens but that is a good deal for someone! Thanks for the support otonoh! I need it! I'm going absolutely bonkers. Gonna have recharge the battery on the flashlight and if the chicks hatch they surely will be blind. Thought I saw an egg move but think it's eye strain. Looked back through the posts they were put in the bator on the 28th. Today should be the day. But I did add a few eggs for 2 days after. Boy Buster is really on a rampage this morning! He's chasing everyone and Peatwo is really gettin a workout. RUN Peatwo RUN! Buster went after my black boots first thing this morning knew he was gonna have a bad feather day. Think I'll have to pick him up to calm his nerves, OK my nerves too. Now my back hurts and guts are in a knot. Sympathy labor.
