Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

SF those call babies are adorable and for a brief moment I thought I would get hit with the "ohhhh I want one" bug that I saw flying at me, but I dodged it and I escaped without being infected (this time). But ducks are soooo cute, it's hard to resist.

DD called me today, in addition to three spindly pine tree seedlings her 4 year old son obtained for me on Earth Day from Lowes (they said he could have 3, she asked how many he thought I needed, of course he said 3!), today a lady she worked with offered her two peach trees that her MIL gave her that she didn't want... they are about 2 -3 feet tall, no idea what breed they are. And my ex brought her a 3 foot pine tree of some sort. Good thing I like pines and want some for the birdies! Now hopefully she can keep them alive until June 12 when they are going to come up for a visit. To say she's not good with plants is an understatement. If it can't make noise it won't get food or water!

Rounded up some quotes from movers and PODS, now DH has to make a decision so we can get things lined up. Hoping he'll pay the extra $400.00 and just let the movers have at it, I really don't want to move out of and into a 2 story house! He's stressed to the max, spent the week going over the final figures and trying to get them to straigthen them out and get them right, so he has the right amount when he goes to closing. So far they've screwed lots of things up and they were still trying to get it right today. He leaves the east coast Friday to drive to Janesville, so they better get it right fast! I"ll be SO glad when it's over with!

Well, Murphy is sitting here demanding some attention. Poor guy he's been so lost without Stanley. Another reason I can't wait to get moved, found a 6-7 month old pup that's at a shelter in Michigan. We don't want to wait to long as Murphy tends to get possessive and we don't want him to get used to no company and us being his only playmates. Puppy has a great personality, they had lots of interest all along, until folks learn the little fella is deaf. He was fostered for awhile and learned some signs, smart, easily trainable, good with dogs, cats, kids and doesn't bark (which is great, Murphy barks enough for 2).

Off to wrestle with Murphy then out for a walk. Have a good evening all!

dkvart SOOO cannot wait for you to get here.. I will help you get inundated with chickens!!! heehheheheh

A neighbor and old friend of my barn owner stopped by and she may have a call duck hen for me.
The ducks are soooo smart, they follow the geese into the barn, and sometimes want to go in by themselves.. such wonder ducks...

Okay, my dumb question #3: stormed really bad here.....my wife says what do we do when there is a tornado warning or whatever? Do we move them to the garage.....they are chickens right?

Dooner, I would recommend the garage. My ducks were out when a tornado ran through our yard last August and my big Blue Swedish got trashed around. We found her in a clump of weeds, soaked to the skin, and unable to walk. Her wing and leg were pretty badly sprained. When I heard we had big storms coming today, I left my birds in their granary. They hated me for that

since it turned out to be just a rainstorm after all!

SF...I love those baby calls. Everytime my DD and I see calls, we want some.

We could have some, but I'm afraid the bigger ducks would be rough on them. (All hens)

One of these days I'm going to get my garden in.....I bet I'll be the last.

Welcome gaitedgrl! Another horsey person!

Wow I can't believe how many chickens all of you have

sounds like that chicken math is catching

I better be careful cause DH say I already have more than I planned on.

Dooner I don't have an answer but glad you asked.

dkvart I hope the move goes smooth and you are all comfy cozy soon

My 14 young chicks are 4 1/2 weeks old, when they are ready to go out to the coop with the pair of Jungle Fowl how do I go about introducing them? DH just wants to put them out and let them figure it out. Is that all there is to it? I don't have any roosters in the 14 (I think any way) so that shouldn't be an issue with Tarzan the Jungle Roo.

Gaitedgrl, hope you enjoy the "Cheeseheads" company.

Good evening! Home at last from my meeting...one of my Master Gardener friends was there so we went to her place and I picked up the tomato cages I had waiting. The club built some nice tall ones out of line fence...should last a good while! Anyhow I got a look at the plants that were going for sale this weekend at our plant sale. I think I will bring mine over there on Friday night and help with set-up so I can take first dibs! (plant math is as bad as chicken math sometimes!)

My chickens just go into their coop during storms Dooner. I dont even have to tell them to go either...they just do. The ducks seem to like to stay out and so do the geese but even they will go in if it gets really windy. I wouldnt worry too much about it.

Shanti--go ahead and get some calls! They are so noisy and bossy that your other ducks probably wouldnt even notice them! I have only a trio (got htem a few months back from BL4) and I put them into quarantine for a bit and let them out with the others and they never got picked on once! Maybe the big birds dont know what they are?
lau.gif
They just run about and do their little quacks and squawks and mind their own business. A bit of a sad note tonight though...I went into lock them up and the mama was standing on the nest...one egg was out and broken (the baby looked like an early quitter) and another egg was out with a dime sized hole in it and empty! Sweet Folly:how big would a baby be now if it was to hatch on the 21st? THis one was about an inch and a half long...maybe they are that small when they still have 10 days to go? ANyhow, I have no idea if she pushed them out or if something got them when she was off the nest. Now there are only 4 so one is actually missing too! One is starting to look like it might be a rotter too...getting dark and I thought it was maybe smelly? Hard to tell.

Several of my geese seem to be abandoning nests too I know of two for sure that have been deserted. In one all the eggs were rotten and in another the goose seems to have just left. WHat is going on? I had a year like this a few years ago too. If Frankie doesnt hatch hers then I know it will be a bad year. I did take half of those guinea eggs from the barn and put them under a broody yesterday! I hope these work! I have also had 3 broodies that the eggs went rotten. Been a bit strange this year...

SusieJ--I think that because you have so many little chickens the games will pretty much ignore them after a few pecks to establish order. I dont think you will have to go through a big ordeal. THat seems to be more for when you are integrating just a new bird or three and you have a bunch of regulars. THen they gang up on them! Good luck.

My farrier is coming at 8AM tomorrow so I better get up to bed! Geez--no wonder I have to sleep until 8:30! NOw I will have to read a few chapters in my book and probably wake up at 2:30 so I can stare at the ceiling for an hour of two...Good night--sweet dreams! Terri O

Thank you for scooping up those birds for me, can't wait to see them Saturday. Norwegian Jaerhons, Woot! Really glad things went well with the guy, anyone who gives hatching eggs to young'uns must be alright. I want to get to the swap between 7:30 and 8; that's really a feat for me, gotta bring the little guy and he still gets me up every night. *insert yawning smiley* I'm also bringing two runner ducks, found someone to take Julie's pair of troublemakers.

Speaking of, last Saturday I was on the phone with my mum, and I look out in the backyard to see Julie walking through our woods bringing her 2 girls, 3 border collies, and 3 chickens!
lol.png
She's giving me her 2-month Barred Rocks, and one Production Red. Just had to laugh that she walked 1/3 mile through the farm fields to bring me chickens! She rules too!

Welcome gaitedgrl, I hope that's in reference to horses too.

Hmm, missing Cheesers...BBCB, Magoochie, KAQ. Time to check in people!

I have come to the sad conclusion that every project I attempt this year will take me exactly 5 times longer than it should. A very simple brooder made from a sheet of plywood, 2 ripped 2x4's and wire mesh took me 2.5 days to make. All due to a certain needy, anti-napping 20-lb human. So, Shanti, you will NOT be the last to plant your garden!

Good Morning All! TO sounds like all your karma is being used in plants this year. Amy you ARE going to bring that lil cherub to the Bash aren't you? Dooner that's easy you take them with you to where ever you are safe!

dk dealing with banks is a major pain when buying a house, when I bought this one I told them I don't want to hear oh and we need money for this and money for that after the fact. I said I want the bottom line! I want to know right now how much I need for EVERYTHING!

Agree with all the missing people. I don't know what YOU said to scare them off!

The crab trees are starting to blossom here and the dandilions.

Keedoke and others,

Did you catch the 10o'clock channel 58 news in Milwaukee. They talked about the proposed Milwaukee ordinance. The alderman speaking was very much against it. They showed coops with many hens, probably 20 or more which is not the proposal. It was very slanted and brought up disease, etc.
