Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

MLH- What will you do with Buzzie when he matures?
If you need a NON eating home keep me in mind.

Dorne, i am sorry I haven't gotten back to you, I got a call from a neighbor to go and take care of his dogs. He has 9 mini doxies, he went in to have a skin cancer removed
from his nose, and was there for 5 hours, and then was admitted to have MORE removed and then a skin graft.
It has been a long 2 days.
I can bring you the chicks either some time this weekend OR next week.
let me know.

I moved the ducks yesterday, so went to get more hay from their old stall, and lo and behold, a PILE of eggs in their little wire hidey hole...
I don't know if the drake has even tried to mate with her.. Yes I am sure he tried, but he IS a teeny call duck.. and well SHE is not! LOL
So we will see if she sets on them, AND I will candle them in a week to see if there are veins...

Those could be some interesting ducks.. white and wild but size wise, some where in between.

I hope every one is having a goodnight.
Carol

Carol do you have a tub of water for your calls? The drake submerges the duck when he is mating with her...... although I have seen my drake be successful on dry land as well....

Raimnel, yeah I am in the train derailment town Wega.... writing the whole word out is too long!
wink.png
Poi Sippi is only 15 miles away.... compared to where some of you live I consider that my backyard (along with FM who is about 12 miles....)

New bator is set up, just need to calibrate and get the caulk smell out of it plus pick up some sponges for the bottom....... I'll post pics when I get some.

I like the idea of an egg swap but I have not been getting any eggs so I guess I'll have to pass......

Off to bed; 4:30 will be here long before I am ready for it!

Hello everyone and then some...I got home from work at 8 PM and am soooooo happy to have a long (sorta) weekend! I still have to walk the dog on Monday...wonder if I will get double time? NOT! Well, I can pick up my dog fence that I bought at a rummage a little while ago...I noticed that the people that are moving have it down and under the bush for me!
smile.png

Just let the dogs out and I am so mad that I dont have the garden in...the nicest rain is falling down right now....

Jim--I now know what the folks are talking about not to drink anything while reading this forum! I nearly sprayed the 'puter from what you said the first time...then again when somebody commented on it! Dangerous stuff this is...

I went out just now to check out the leaf of my tomato plants and they dont look any different than any other tomato plant I have so I guess I do not have the "potato leaf" variety of which you speak. He did have some that looked different though...but I didnt get any. BUT, today I had the biggest score at a rummage sale (they had chickens of course!) I got the same varieties of Heirloom Tomatoes plus a bunch of different ones for ONE DOLLAR a plant!!! (I paid $4 and $5 or the last ones each) So I bought 20 and 4 peppers too! Then I got a nice animal cage (big), a cool basket, an old bread box full of old clothespins, some chair webbing in bright yellow(to fence horses), AND MY OWN TABLE SAW!!! Yup...DH said, "we have a table saw!" I replied, "but it is in pieces in the garage for 7 years now!" So now JIM (if you ever send me the cutting directions for the nest boxes) I DO have a saw and I WILL use it!
wink.png
I am a happy girl!

That Buzzy sure is a cute critter! I am thinking---no no no I am not thinking about pheasants!!!!!
lau.gif
Dont show any more pleeeaaase!
FT--I think you would do well to plant the spruce in buckets for a bit...when they are little (like the Arbor Day trees) they need to be kept weeded very well for at least two years (maybe 3) to thrive. Unless you can do that with weed mats or hand weeding, buckets might be easier.
Carol--how are you set for visitors? Thinking that I have some rare time this weekend... Has anyone heard from Hurley lately? I am wondering if she got her Iowa Blues ordered or promised? Gosh--never thought of it--hope she's not in jail for murder of her DH...
hide.gif

Well I sure dont "need" any more chicks either but I think a "cookie exchange" with eggs would be a blast! HMMM---I will think on how to do it at the bash...maybe every one could bring a couple dozen eggs with their initials on them...then we could do an "egg walk" (like a cookie walk) and fill our cartons! Yeah, that might work. After we get a count then we can announce how many to bring, or you could just take how many you bring...great way to get different breeds or to introduce new blood in those "stagnant" backyard flocks! WHOOOO--HOOO! more chicks!

Sweetfolly...how about those white calls for my neighbor? Got the right ones together yet??? He called me again!

OK--I think I am done...it is late already...funny how short the night is when you get home so late! Sweet dreams every one! I am planning on dreaming about gardening....much to do this weekend--let's start out the SUMMER!!! (are you listening Mother Nature???) Terri O

Ugh. I've been sick for the past few days....we went hiking at Pewit's Nest State Natural Area on Monday, and I slipped on a rock and fell into Skillet Creek.
sad.png
Scraped my elbow, jammed a toe pretty good, and woke up the next morning with a sore throat and feeling icky. Haven't been doing much besides sleeping and working very short shifts at work this week!

Will's been turning the eggs in the cabinet incubator while I've been sick, and managed to pull a tray out too far the other day, so it fell out!
barnie.gif
Put big ol' dents in 5 Hookbill and 1 Stanbridge White egg that were all exactly 2 weeks into incubation, but the membranes all appeared to be intact, and I had him repair what damage he could with some candle wax, so fingers crossed!
fl.gif

Terri O - The first batch of eggs from the White call drake are in the incubator, but fertility's not looking great. I think I have about a dozen eggs "sired" by him in there, and when I checked the other day I only saw veining in maybe 3 or 4 of them. I was having 100% fertility before the drake-switch - guess he's not as ambitious as the Black drake!
hmm.png

Anyways, I'm feeling a little better tonight, but I think I need another day of recovery before my brain will start to function properly again!
tongue.png

OK... now to try to remember what I was going to comment on
tongue.png

Rabbits.... most first timers don't seem to do well. Some never catch on! A few are good mothers. One of the the reasons nature has them breed so often is because she didn't make them good mothers (as a whole). Even the "good" mothers ignore the kits most of the day and only feed them 2 or 3 times a day. Sometimes they will kick them out of the cage (or just let them wiggle out). I even had one that ate them! That's rather rare though.

My uncle had a horse that was called a "lavender dapple" Might be the same type that you all were talking about.

Egg exchange: Won't the hatch on those eggs be kind of late for our winters? Great idea though.

Rummaging!: I went while my son was at his treatment. I found and electric pressure washer for $10! When I grabbed it I asked the guy if it worked. He said it works fine. Then his wife chimed in and said "Yea, we just got lazy and hire a kid to do those chores now!"
lau.gif
Wish I could do that!!!!! So now I can wash the deck before we refinish it, and I think I can use it in the coop too!
tongue.png
I was hoping to find a bench grinder but no luck. I did find a real nice vise though for $5 and it has the "extension bar" and some attachments I'll have to figure out. The same guy also had a box of brand new on/off timers.... .25 each! I bought 6 and 2 dimmer switches. He worked for the company at one time and these were samples. One of the ones was an outdoor one with 4 outlets and settings. The kind you might use for Xmas lights or flood lights. He also had a box free stuff.
wee.gif
In my quest I did see 2 table saws I would have liked to have, but too much money for now. TO I envy you that you got one!
cool.png
Dang it! I got a nice big work shop now with LOTS of work bench space.... I want to fill it with tools!
fl.gif
Yes gentlemen, some of us can handle tools better than our DH's (NO SMIRKING!
wink.png
)

Washing chicken butts: I bought a "party tub" on sale (meant for ice and beer) that was on stilts. When I paid for I said "This is going to make a great chicken bathtub." Yup, I got looks!

Chest Freezer: I am 5' nothing.... had to empty out big part of freezer to reach 20# turkey in back left corner. Remember your lessons on fulcrums? Enough said.

Love the CHICKS!

TO: You were going to post a pic of Turk's baby!

Jim, do you think Peatwo would like camping? After all, he may miss if your your gone too long!

Well, the babies are in their own coop! I think they are a bit confused right now, they were so used to being so crowed that they just hang together in a chick lump! They just run from one side to the other in a wave peeping fowl! Sure wish I could sex them. The first 6 are suppose to be "gold comets" . From what I've seen, often the hens will have white on them too. Sometimes quite a bit. And the roos usually have lots of brown/red in them but mostly white. I got a couple that are about 50/50!!!
barnie.gif
And I know you can't go by combs either. grrrr

Well, bed time...nigh nigh seepy time!

Good Wet Morning All! Cind I can just see your feet sticking out of that freezer
lau.gif
I know it's hard to keep things straight on here but Peatwo in MY boy! Jim can't have him! But I would give him Buster.
hide.gif
Sounds like you made a heck of haul at that sale! Glad to hear that you can handle tools wish more of the female gender could then I could sit on my butt and drink beer and point out what she's doing wrong.

Your are going to believe this. I was just thinking the other day how Peatwo would handle the Bash. His own little tent complete with a little hot dog/ marshmellow stick. Makin little chicken smores over his little fire pit.
lau.gif
SF hope your feeling better soon! And your eggs survived their trip.
fl.gif
TO hope you get some time off this weekend! Sounds like you made a good score too! Good come back on the DH! MLH have to agree with everyone that Buzzy is a cutie! Well OK they all are. Just passin along my experience with chest freezers is all. Hope you didn't take it the wrong way! Dornes
gig.gif
I did the same paint job on my coop. I want to give you a heads up on that paint though. I put on a good primer think it was Zinzler or something and bought Menards red premium paint $20 something a gal. After the third coat it still did not cover the primer.
he.gif
somad.gif
Went to Ace and got their premium paint for the same price and it covered in one coat. If you put in a garden your chickens will keep the worms from attacking you.
gig.gif
Just don't let them in when you put in seeds or plants.

Bad naughty chickens

Need to get a fire going to take the dampness out of the air and go let the kids out. Letting L sleep in and if the boys are out they love to go by the bedroom window and get mom out bed. Hope the rain clears out and we can go fishin this aft.

Another day of drizzle...

GF - glad to hear you are okay after falling in the creek. Sorry to hear you are sick though. Not a fun time of the year to be dealing with that!

Carol- this next week will work out fine, I will not be around most of today, tomorrow I am working more on the coop and Monday I have a cookout going on... busy weekend, once again! Sorry to hear about your neighbor though, hope that once the patches are removed he is on the mend. Hey, how old are those chicks, just so I know if I can set them up in the same brooder or have a different one to put them in. I will have week olds and day olds in the same brooder, once my second order comes this coming week.

I LOVE rummage saling! Nice to hear of some awesome deals you are getting. This year, my sister in law and I headed to Wanaukee village wide. Man, talk about garage sales! It was my first time, but I wasn't too impressed on prices, so I don't think I will go next year. I like the cheap-o sales! If I can go to goodwill and buy something used for that price, then it shouldn't be priced that on a rummage sale! And if I can go to a dept store and buy clearanced clothes for that price... well you get the hint!

And yes, us girls can really use power tools if we set our minds to it! Yesterday, I was using the sawzall, circular saw and the drill! All by myself, hubby was out planting corn. I am a little afraid to try the table saw.... that blade up there just in sight of being able to take my arms off.... yeesh! Scary!

Who's got the plans for the nesting boxes? The coop that I purchased has "nesting boxes" in it but they are no where near what a chicken would love to use... that is for sure. I'd love the drawings for the nesting boxes too, if you would like to share.

DrHaHa - thanks for the advice on the paint, I surely will keep that in mind, I don't want to be out there painting all summer long because the paint won't stick and keeps soaking in! I like the all in one paint, that I don't have to use primer! I hate painting

As for the chest freezer... good luck with that. I would fall in trying to dig for something. I am not too tall and I would never be able to reach the bottom. As far as my kitchen cabinets...I have a small ladder in the kitchen! lol

Chick sized smores... whats funny? I just saw an ad on the bottom of the forum that was "do your chicks like to camp and hike - check out our line of camping and hiking supplies" Really? People camp with chickens?! lol
I was going to say more, but forgot who said what! lol

Get out there in your gardens today if you get a chance.... I am jeleous of you all! And have a great day!

Dornes it didn't soak in, had a good coat of primer it just didn't cover worth a crap! Yes it was the right kind of paint to go with the primer. It was very aggerrrvating I'd paint leave it over night come home from work expecting to hang the plywood only to find it needed another coat. It put me waay behind schedule! I gotta find that ad! Lil sunglasses, lil chaise roosts
lau.gif
Jim I hope your remembering to save some big goose feathers and anyone else that has geese for the Bash!

good morning, I am starting out slow today, but I expect my momentum to pick up as the day progresses..

chicken nests:
I have photos and could send a cutout plan to somebody..and then whomever could post them here.. I cannot get photos to work on byc with my dial-up.. any volunteer?? PM me for my email address or give me yours.. the plans are for 3 nests from a half sheet of plywood..

Theres at least 22 eggs between the two nests...one my Blue Fawn is sitting on, one my black and white scovie is sitting on. Both Sired by my Blue Fawn drake i'm assuming...Okay, I didn't "find" these, we knew they were laying. And I said, "See if she goes Broody!" well, look what I ended up with!! Two that are broody! I don't know which nest is whos, as they swap.

Annnd, My first garden harvest of the season
