Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Afternoon all!

I got most of the garden weeded yesterday while it was cool so I never really got a chance to check in with you guys! I'll first post the happenings here then make small talk!

The chickens are fine and somewhat redeemed themselves from being completely defective. While strawberries are completely scary, raspberries are quite devine. Valerie is starting to make I might try to lay an egg sounds..or she is complaining..it's hard to say....
The little Barred Rock that I thought I was gonna loose is surprisingly still alive and is getting slowly better each day. Emma is still broody and on two eggs. Lavinia has joined in the broodiness and Violet can't make up her mind to brood to not to brood....you know that eternal, age old Worthless Chicken dilemma.....

*mutters stupid chickens....*
Buzzy is great as are the Cal Whites and Cornie of course. However, on a that note, dh and I looked at the calendar and this Sunday Cornie will be 8 weeks old and it will be time to process him or her. As sad as it is, both dh and I feel that it it for the best since that is what he was bred for. He has had a great 8 weeks of being a chicken doing typical chicken chores and tasks, but I can tell that time is no longer on his side. This heat has been hard on him and he is moving a little slower these days plus his he the size of a cantaloupe. He has lead a full and happy life and who would have died in the brooder if I had not nursed him along. For a broiler, he has had a great life compared to his brethren.

What else...the rabbits are doing great and liked the cooler weather yesterday. Toostie had her doggie dental yesterday and did terrific. She was also a staff favorite at the clinic! Also, dh informs me last night that he wants to get some Freedom Rangers. I said fine but first we have to get rid of some chickens! He made no comment.

The garden is coming along and I've got tons of veggies flowering and the mators are starting to get little baby tomatoes!

Ok so now for small talk:

Hurley: your welcome for the info!

WCC-cute niece and I'm glad Zeus got a good home!

CC-glad to hear Dottie is better!

Anyable-we use super glue to fix egg cracks. Hence, why I have a hen named A Super Glue! As long as the membrane is not damaged you should be good.

Cind-Glad to hear the Duke has a little bit longer here with you! I hope his ear infection clears up. I use hot dogs to pill the dogs that don't like taking meds. I just buy the el cheepo hot dogs and cut them up and hide the pill inside. They are gone before the dog even knows he or she just ate some medication!! I also have used Cheese Wiz but I find hot dogs are a lot less messier...! Cute chickies by the way!

polla-Hope you find your roo...he sure is a handsome thing!

bl4-good luck on the remaining hatch and congrats on the ones that have hatched!

Dooner-Blu-Kote works well as do a couple of products called Anti Pick and No-Pic. They are a thick black ointment that reminds you of Ichthammol. You paste it over the area that is picked or damaged and the birds won't pick at it. You would probably have to do an on line search for it. Blu-Kote would be easier to find though. Strombergs carries a porduct calle Pick No More which is the same thing as the others I mentioned.

Dornes: if you have not found peafowl yet try this farm: Mouse Creek Feather Farm. They are located here in London Wis. Very nice people. Here is their site with all the colors they have. HTH:

Ok I think I've got my small talk done...I'm sorry if I missed any of you!!

Later Taters....

Good Fish Fry Friday All.... :fr

Good luck with the introduction of the newbies Doc, actually not new just comin home again. I'm gonna open my Buckeye grow out pen tomorrow and see how it goes. Plenty of room to run and hide if necessary. Time to join forces and make the flocks run together.

Hope you guys have a good time at the swap. tomorrow. Wish i could make it too.

Finally got the grass cut today. Made the outside cut and noticed a nice blackcap bush loaded with ripe ones. They are on my mind for handfuls after cutting. Next lap....there are the brahmas in a group jumping up and down cleaning up the berries, it was alower bush and they ate every ripe one....

You just gotta love those pretty hens.

Thanks for the kind offer Jim. I have the tatos under control for this year, but it could be a future project. Yep, I can weld. It's nice not to see any potato beetles again this year...not a one! I have enough garden here to have a never ending project. Get one area good and another needs attention...I love it! The harvest is always worth the effort.

Collected another doz egg today. I'm sitting on 14 doz right now. Time to deliver eggs again, eh!

Hey everybody,

So the chicks arrived today. I ordered 4 Easter Eggers, 2 Polish, and 50 assorted pullets. They were all alive and healthy and made it through shipment. One died about 2 hours after it got here and I can only find 3 Easter Eggers not 4. I called and they told me to wait the 4 day period in case any others died and then depending on the amount they would refund my money or ship new chicks. I already managed to sell 7 to a lady that came today, and I am selling another 5 tomorrow. I had a lady that was suppose to take 10 chicks but she isn't returning my calls or e-mails.

So if anyone is interested I have a ton of pullet chicks available. I am asking $4 each to help cover the costs. They are hatchery grade chicks but I have some neat breeds. I have some Buff Brahmas, Black Langshans, Salmon Faverolles, and a ton of chipmunk chicks, and yellow chicks that I don't know what they are. I ordered 50 chicks and got about 40 different looking ones. It's makes things hard when it comes to figuring out what's what. I will also be in Green Bay tomorrow around 11:30am and can bring chicks with me if anyone wants some and is closer to GB.

Green Bay is too far for me. Curious about the chipmunk chicks, any chance they are Iowa Blues?
big_smile.png
The Faverolles are so pretty, too.

Glad you got your EEs! I've got EE hatching eggs, but no extra chicks/pullets. My two EEs from this spring are doing well, pretty cuckoo EEs, one black and one blue. So far they are looking pullet, fingers crossed.

Hello to all, yes we are alive and so are the weeds in the garden
barnie.gif
As BigZ said get to one end and start all over again. Don't get a lot done in the garden during the week. By the time we get home from work and cook and clean up kitchen I'm pooped and only do a little weeding, so this weekend will have to get out and spend some quality time ! MLH so jealous of your weeded garden

Should be fun.
Visit with my parents in Neenah today was nice, Dad slept most of the time so had a good visit with Mom. Sure am lucky to still have them both. We are doing some of the prep work on the side of the kitchen that will be next on the remodel. Have to order a window and the counter top, paint the cabinets that we are reusing ...... I guess a lot to do.
GC good luck with re homing some of the chicks, no room here but thanks for the offer.
Have a good night,
Susie

good evening.. I am pooped.. I worked in the garden until it was too dark.. I got almost all the tomatoes weeded, hilled, watered and weed fabriced.. tomorrow I will spread old hay all over the patch to keep the moisture in and keep the tomatoes off the dirt when they pull the bushes down.. I might not get them staked..

while I was working so hard, I wondered if it was worth it,, then I remembered paying almost a buck for a tomato last year.. Yup it is worth it.. I am really afraid all food is going to go sky high next winter due to the high cost of fuel..

I arbitrarily picked out a section of the corn patch that I am going to baby along.. the rest of the patch is going to have to tough it out with mother nature..

In the morning I have to catch a batch of lavender guineas and americaunas to take to the Elcho swap.. I am thinking of taking a 2 year old rooster too.. maybe two of them.. A Delaware and a Blue Laced Red Wyandotte..

time for a shower and a then couple of Millers .. then early to bed..

....jiminwisc...........

Well I don't know if TO has called or been able to get online. She called me to tell me her Welsummer she got from H&R got reserve champ large fowl, best in breed and another champ or reserve for the same bird.
She got blues for her black aracauna, and a few other birds she took. The bantam lavender roo she had gotten from Hurley was DQ'd for being a self blue with blue or purple barring...
Geez.. pick one!! to fault on..
tongue.gif

I have hay ready to be picked up and brought down to the barn, but have a low tire on the hay wagon. I will have to ask the neighbor who I borrowed it from what he recommends...
I am going to a long trail ride get together with a friend, it all just came to fruition a few days ago, so that should be fun. IF long.
I was out in the heat of the sun working fences at the client's barn today, I need to figure out where to put the mama and her chicks so they stay safe.. I think I have a place I just have to move her.

No eggs pipping under the mallard hen...
ANYONE have newborn baby ducks or geese that I can put under her to fake her out and let her raise them for a few weeks.
You can have them back!! LOL
Good night all

Yeah, I'm old enough to know you gotta be careful but I don't think that will be one that I need to worry about !!!

I got back from Town and he was still monkeying around in the garden, then he hopped on the mower and was mowing around the garden. I was still in the car at this point and noticed that he was Dragging the garden hose along with him as he zoomed by !!!!!! I started honking the horn but he didn't hear it !!
barnie.gif
In the mean time the garden hose knocked over three of my planters, and some other pots and who knows what else. So I kept honking, he turned the opposite direction and was headed further away. Now the hose was starting to get hung up on all of his tomato cages !!!

So I started the car and backed as fast as I could still beeping and I finally got his attention. By this time TG the hose had dropped to the ground and he looked at me like

What?
idunno.gif
It was a long hot trip. I'm tired of driving to town. Three days in a row now
barnie.gif

Was at Menards and all of a sudden all the power went out !!!!
idunno.gif
Heard an old guy walk by and said "They must not have paid their electric Bill "
lau.gif
Wasn't so funny though cause I thought I might not be able to check out and I sure as heck wasn't going to have to come to town again !!!! Luckily within a half hour things were up and running !!!
Then at Aldis, their computers were rejecting everybodies debit cards. Said they were in the dial up mode !!! Who knows what was going on in Rhinelander today with the power, all I know that all of the stores seemed real Hot !!! Normally I enjoy shopping but not today
somad.gif

On a brighter note, all of my chicks that we put out in the new coop are adjusting fine. Guineas were trupsing all over the garden today, gosh I love those guys !!!
love.gif

I had left Butt dog home today cause it was so hot. So she got even with me. She decided she was going to have Doggy Pasty Butt. I asked EggTost (DH) if he saw that while I was gone, yeah but "I'm not going to clean it !!! " Nice !!! So Butt Dog got her Butt washed tonight !!!
clap.gif

Well, supper is done. I made chicken breast (store bought) in cream of mushroom and cream of chicken soup with a few cans of mushrooms and green beans. Just need to zap a few potatoes and all done !!! This is getting to be a bad habit, eating at 10PM.

Glad to hear everyone seems to be doing ok tonight and the gardens are taking off

Well, Duke is holding his own but the meds haven't quite kicked in yet.

P37..... any thing on your roo yet?

WCC... glad Zeus found a home close by! Too bad about your hatch.... hope you stop whatever killed those silkies!

FT.... That hen went broody 4 times in 3 months.... I caved and bought her some fertile eggs to hatch. She did a great job! The ones in the cage thing I got from Jim at the bash.... 4 Ameraucanas, 5 Guineas and 1 "something" (Wyandotte ?) I sure hope it's a pullet... it's a cutie!
love.gif
What a story about ET and the hose!!!
gig.gif
That's something I see my DH doing!
duc.gif

Great book find!

CC .... yep, I'm up over 40 now! (5 are the guineas from Jim) Now comes the hard part..... convincing myself I have enough!

BL4... too bad more of your duckies didn't make it.... the one that did look great!

Dornes..... are you really sure you want peacocks (or hens) they can be very, annoyingly noisy! I would rather live next to 5 roosters than 1 peacock! JMO
hide.gif

Susie... Glad your back

Dr. H.... hope you had a nice sweat less day!

Well, I moved the youngin's from the small coop to the big coop after they all went to bed. Hope there's not too much discord in the morning!
fl.gif
Now I have to clean out the small coop and make the top guinea proof! I'll also have to cover the outside run for them. Between that and the garden desperately needing a good weeding (I've only done around the plants) there is a ton of work to do! I hope I get a slave child soon LOL:lau Probably won't happen for a while though.... they seem to turn into "good kids" after one of them has to work for a day!
gig.gif
Guess I'll just have to get my butt in gear!
frow.gif
And we got another 2 cords of wood today that needs stacking!

OH..... I sooo wish I had the camera in the coop today! One of the chicks was sitting on Jasmine's back! It was so cutie! I'm sure it would have made pic. of the week!
