Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Watching a thunderhead forming off to our west, just got done removing a dead hen from the layer pen. She was my older black Ameraucana. The Ameraucanas don't seem to be taking the heat as well as some of the others. The Iowa Blues act like it's 65 degrees out and couldn't care less about the heat. Fed them some mealies tonight and made a nice cold water mash and hosed down the coop. Watching them trying to decide between weathering the storm and heading into the coop as night is falling. Poor guys.

Good HOT HOT evening all. Just getting in from doing chores and hosing myself off in the shower. Man, who knew someone could sweat that much!? Yesterday we took the kids down to the creek for some tubing down it (it isn't a very deep creek and it doesn't move too fast...) was a blast.

Hubby was putting those HUGE barn fans in the cow barn most of the day yesterday, thought he drank enough water - apparently not because we ended up taking him to the ER last night around 10 after he proceeded to lose all of the water he had drank and his meals from yesterday. Dehydration - go figure. He stayed in the house most of the day today other than when we had to go milk cows.

Speaking of cows - anyone interested in a blind Holstein/Ayrshire/Jersey cross bull calf? He was born on Friday and he seems to have cataracts on both of his eyes. He also seems to be able to see shadows but nothing more than that... no sense of direction, but he is a spitfire too

Free to anyone who would want him... (we don't keep bull calves and always take them to equity - but we are sure equity isn't going to take this little guy.) He's currently on calf milk replacer from a bottle (momma's milk went into the tank this morning, so he was weened off of her)

Chickens, ducks, turkeys and guineas all seemed to be fine throughout the day. Watered them twice. So glad I decided to put their run in a shaded area. I was planning to leave them out until past dark tonight but they all went in to roost about 8:30 - silly things. Went out at 9 and the ducks were just making their way to the coop.

Jim- did they show up for the chicks?

Goth - glad to hear you got rid of some of your chicks.

BBP - Cute cute cute call!

Ford - that is quite the set up you have going on to use the bator while the power is out!

well, off to watch a movie with hubby and listen to the thunder roll in... later all!

Sounds like all the Fair participants are doing well

TO happy to hear you'll be cooler tonight, we sure are liking the AC we got from my sister. Even if you only need it a week out of the year it sure makes that week more comfortable. So far our chickens are doing ok,

I guess some breeds are better equipped to deal with the heat. Sure hope ours are

TO and Jvls, the reason the opposing tooth has problems sometimes is: it no longer hits anything while chewing etc. so it super erupts and can eventually also need to be pulled. Not to worry that usually takes a long time to happen and even if it hits another tooth a little bit it will keep it in place. Jim sure hope it's better soon. If it was a lower and I thinks it was could be you have a dry socket. Usually happens 4-5 days after being pulled. At first it feels ok than 4-5 days later PAIN !
barnie.gif
If that is the case go back and they can put something on it to make the pain stop. Good luck sure hope it's better soon.
We have a large number of deer flies this year and DH is there favorite. I read that there is a strip you put on your hat that has adhesive on it and that is supposed to help. Sure hope they die off soon. So far I am not bothered to much by them.

Hope it stays that way.
BBP I think your little duck is cute.
Good luck with the rest of the Fair competitions for all of you working so hard on it.

Stay cool,
Susie

Yes, the people showed up right at 7:45.. traded their last rooster for a hen.. they missed one last week when they butchered.. It looked like a hen until the next day,,,when it crowed !! should have kept his mouth shut.. LOL It is a production red rooster..

yes my tooth was a lower.. I know what dry socket is,, that is not what I have.. this hurt from day one.. the dentist had to trim a little on the gums to get ahold of the tooth parts.. I will give it two more days and then check with the dentist if it is still hurting..

TO "go jump in the lake" is not an invitation to go swimming..LOL

I could not figure why it was so hot upstairs and the air conditioner could not keep up.. veerry strange.. when I let the dog out, I noticed that the vent tubing had pulled away from the wall and all the warm air from the AC was blowing right back into the house.. Whoa !!! ,, was it ever warm in here.. !! LOL
It felt cooler outside...

The new rooster decided to pick a fight with one of the guinea roosters... bad mistake.. that guinea turned him every which way but loose.. That guinea was plucking feathers faster than my Whiz Bang.. The pecking order was restored..

Not me. We got skunked on the rain again today.

I watched the radar yesterday & today, saw some impressive looking storms, then....nothing. A few sprinkles, barely showed on the concrete. And it was just lightening out a little while ago off in the distance, but that peetered out too.

I watered some of my pots today, but have to finish up tomorrow. And the darn woodchuck nibbled the buds off my black-eyed susans right before they were going to open.

Don't know where that vile little creature came from, but he can return there any time now.

Cind, I hope the new dog works out for you. You'll have to post pics.

kristip, sorry your pullet wasn't getting better, but glad Carol gave you a helping hand. It was for the best. Hope DD is doing ok, & the littermate.

TO, you sound just like me. I just love those old barns & get bummed when I see old ones rotting away or getting torn down. Those new metal ones just have no character, no history. It makes me sick too when I hear of people doing away with animals. Call me weak or a woosie, but I couldn't do it. You're absolutely right: people are taking over all the places that the animals lived, so where are they supposed to go? I envy people who sew too. Glad you liked the Wiki post. I like learning things too. I didn't know the DNR released some Amer. martens in WI, but they said on Wiki that their diets were mostly voles, fruit, other vegetation, and insects, with other things dependant on their geographic location. They didn't mention chickens, but the beech marten from Europe that escaped in SE WI have been known to kill chickens. My sis had almost half her flock killed by them. Nasty lil beasties. And good luck with the surgeries. I hope they went well.

Jim, my dentist told me if you get a tooth pulled, the tooth above or below it that it used to hit against would become weak & could eventually cause you problems. Oops! Nevermind. Sorry about the roo. And I sure hope you are feeling better soon.

Sorry to hear about your power being out, FM. Glad you got the incubator to keep running.

Deb, I'd drop those gals off at the nearest motel with their mother (or you could send them over by Cind. She knows how to get kids to turn their attitudes around). And if the mom has no friends to listen to her (gee, I wonder why?), give her the # for a psychiatrist. And I've got some berry bushes for you, just let me know.

BBP, I think Taffy is adorable.

Hurley, sorry about your hen.

Dornes, I absolutely love cows! But DH would disown me for sure. Hey, FT?????
lau.gif
Speaking of which, she should be back tomorrow, right? Not that I haven't tried to fill in in her absence.
gig.gif

Jim... to bad about the roo.... was he the only one like that you had? You seem to have issues with switches....
gig.gif

FM.... you sue seem to have bad luck with bators and power!
roll.png
However nice you have a cool house! 71* WOW!
ep.gif

dkv.... CC has a point about my "slave kids"! Hard work works so well it's hard to get them back!
lau.gif
.... gee, coop needs cleaning and I have a very weedy garden
roll.png
Oh well, hopefully you'll never see them again! And I didn't have enough work, I'm sue Jim could have fixed them!

BBP.... Taffy almost looks like a little floating statue! So cute!
love.gif
I don't think she's ugly at all!

GC.... congrats on selling most of those chicks!

Hurley.... sorry about your old hen

Dornes.... hope hubby feels better soon... don't let him out of the house without a water bottle!

Well, no rain here!.... AGAIN!!! petered out before it got here!
rant.gif
Turned the sprinkler on for the garden, when I'm done here I'll move it closer to the coop so the hens can have some damp ground.

Morning All! A little better out there today huh? But tomorrow is supposed to be real bad! Dornes that had to have been scary with the DH! Hope he recovers soon. Not a fun ride to go on. People beat me dk to posting about spoiled rotten kids and the friendless mom. Sounds like she's totally clueless. Kids like that raise my hackles fast! They wouldn't get away with that crap at my house either. Ya eat what we're having or go hungry. Youngest DD would be invited for supper at a set time, ALWAYS showed up a hour or so late. So we started eating at the appointed time and put it all away and let her fend for herself. I hate seeing old barns go to waste too. It's just wrong! BBP I think Taffy is a cutie too! Jim hope your hole heals FASTER! That's miserable! Glad your people showed up! Love to watch a young upstart get put in his place.
lau.gif
H&R congrats to the chillins on their ribbons! Cind like the idea of a seeing eye dog for Duke maybe after the training period you can lend him to Dornes! Hurley sorry about your hen!
hugs.gif
The kids here seem to be doing OK, have a fan in the coop wall and put a box fan on the floor to keep the air movin in there. fm good save on the bator! Sounds like the house is very well insulated. I'm working on that. Have get my mess off the front porch and the yard, pick berries, clean the coop, and sharpen good neighbor Donny's brush blades and chainsaw blade. Then back inside to run wiring and a few million other things. I better go.

I was up way too early!! Fed parakeets, home pullet, hung laundry, then to the barn to feed horses, water and feed all the chickens, and get to my job by 7:20.
I have to hang more laundry tonight, give a riding lesson and then bring one of my horses home from where she is at. Feed horses again.
Then dinner and fall on my bed till tomorrow.. ACK
Have a great one and stay kool all.

Hot Hot day and the AC at work is on the fritz! Lovely... running up to the front office which is the only space with AC. Yuck.
Glad my kids are at the sitters today because yesterday was rough being inside all day. We did lots of art projects, brought out new toys acquired at rummage sales and read lots of books and I finally resorted to a Scooby Doo movie. Then the kids had to play Tball last night. We told them it might be too hot, but they really wanted to go so we sweated it out for an hour.

Yes Celtic- it was for the best to cull her and I thank Carol for her help with that. We were too close after getting her as a day old this spring. She was egg bound with teh prolapse too she said.
Now I am debating acquiring a lovely young salmon favorelle from Carol... they are on my list of breeds to own... just hoping she can blend in with the rest of the flock being younger. maybe she will be a spitfire like my little white silkie!

anyway- stay cool everyone!!1
