Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Terri-Congrats on all those wins! Where are you going to put all those beauties?

BPP-Sorry about those creeps getting into your car. I used to never lock up at night but my concerned neighbor told me that even with a dog, I'm nuts leaving the place unlocked out in the country. So I've gradually gotten used to locking up at night and when I leave.

DKV-good luck on your DH's MRI tomorrow. Keep us posted.

And as far as those teenagers go, I'd have dropped them at the pool long ago and left them there! If my high school students ever acted that way, they knew they lost their chance getting what they wanted. Sometimes they apologize though, and I'm grateful they've learned a lesson.

DS19 is still in the barn putting up stalls. What a great kid, even if he is getting paid. It's a bugger out there.

And then I have to go to Detroit to pick up DD13 and I'm a little worried leaving the birds and horses with the neighbor kid to watch. Hopefully the heat spell will break by Thrusday when both me and DS are gone. Some of the ducks aren't smart enough to find the coolest spots and they lay there panting.

Hope you all are smart enough and lucky enough to find a cool place to sit!

Hey All,
I can understand about picky kids, my niece is one of those. And she is spoiled a bit by her mother & an only child, she says she won't eat white cheese... even if its provolone.. BUT says she will
eat it if on Chicken N Bisquit crackers,.. so for snack... she gets just that...
AND THROWS A FIT... NOT ON MY WATCH!! she will eat it and be happy.
She can be rude and whines ALOT... not with me.. she does it once.. and that is it.
Can't wait till she gets bigger....and older.
Apparently the Beltline around Madison buckled badly in two places, so two lanes closed right at rush hour.

BBP-I started locking my doors to my car and to my home many years ago, I grew up in CA and NV... There are places I will leave my keys in the car, but only certain places and at certain times.
Even with a big dog, you need to practice safety, I would have your car fingerprinted, there is a good chance a person watched you and then saw you didn't have your purse.
Even creepier thinking about that...

I hope to bring one horse home tonight, she is causing issues with client's horses. But it may have to wait till it cools down.

Take care all,
Carol

Yes, rescues often have GSD pups, and not all sloped backs either (I prefer straight backs as well.) I have seen some real beauties on Petfinder. WI seems to have a lot of GSD-specific rescues, plus they can put feelers out to find the animal you're looking for and a good match. Good luck BBP.

good afternoon, where to start? deb, shame on you for the way you bit your tongue,, the kid ASKED you,, you should have told them.. However, since they did ask,, I am sure they already knew the answer.. I liked DH's alternatives. He gets an " atta boy" !!!

I did that thing with the ice cream.. it seemed to help..

my corn has grown a foot since it got hot.. Next it will be ears..

deb, I would definately recommend a hatband for you..are you sure that thing that bit you was not a horn-et ?

I asked a Dutchman why they wear wooden shoes ? anybody know ? he said , it keeps the woodpeckers off our heads..

Evening all!

I had to catch up on a lot at various times today and I can't remember some posts! So here is the generic Welcome to the newbies ( I think a saw one!) The generic-sorry for the losses of birds-please forgive me if I did not get specific! Congrats to those who won stuff at fairs! Good job to those who sold off stock/birds! Great pics to those who posted some and there was one of an "ugly" duck named Taffy that all I have to say is: She sure is purrrrrrty! A generic hope every one is going ok in this heat and make sure to drink loads of water!!!

GC-glad to hear the new dog is working out!--that I do remember!

So here is my update as promised!

The rabbits are still in the basement and doing great! They love being next to each other in the row cages and they are enjoying the coolness that is the basement! I find a lot of excuses to "visit" them during the day. They have fun lounging and "chatting" at each other! Harry the House Bunny is doing well too and I put frozen water bottles in his cage during the day since he is here in the tv room. It's not to bad in the house considering the AC window unit is in the next room. The sun sets on the tv room side of the house so Harry gets a little frozen bottle in the afternoon.

The dogs don't want to spend at lot of time outside and I cant blame them!

So the chicken update. The Girls are dealing ok with the heat and I have a fan on them. At first they all ran from the forced air from the fan but now they all stand in front of the fan and take turns dust bathing right in front of it! The little Bardie is still in her cage but I have a fan right on her and she is enjoying that.

Now for the chick update: *sigh* I have to take a couple of calming deep breaths because the Old Broads/broodies are no longer Worthless Chickens.

They are officially Waste of Space Chickens and have signed their death warrant. I had the one bantam chick hatch and then the remaining egg hatched but the chick did not make it. It looked like it was deformed and it had a small prolapse where the umbilical cord attached. I had to do a small assist to get the egg membrane from around it's wing but the chick hatched on it's own. Sadly, she or he was just not right to begin with.
So, I still had the bantam. Well, one of the Waste of Space Chickens decided to scalp the little one and almost took her eye out. I heard a lot of baby distress peeping and went to check on her. I found the WOSC's all ignoring her and she was frantic. I picked her up and saw what happened and brought her inside. Where upon I had DH treat her wound and I set up a brooder (which I swore I would not do!) in the basement for her since it was not her fault her Mom did not want her after 2 days. So Sunday afternoon I had one upset chick in a brooder. I put a towel and a little stuffed animal in with her and she calmed down. I help show her where to drink and she drank like a fish. I showed her where to eat and I had to try to get her to eat. She ate a little but not much.
So then DH and I had to figure out where to get another chick! As sheer luck would have it, DH had to visit Abendroth's Hatchery in Waterloo yesterday so I tagged along to see if he had any chicks left from his hatch. Another turn of luck happened and Rick had just 1 chick! An Americana. As it turns out, this chick was a baloot the pipped three days early. It started to pip and Rick tossed it in his incubator, it hatched and he had no idea what he was going to do with it! He was happy to give it to me and so I had a gimpy chick. The Americana has a bum foot/leg! She walks fine but when she stops, the leg sticks out a little. Probably from either being in the egg funny, the incubator, or just it might be her. Either way, I did not care! I had a chick for the bantam! DH took to calling the Bantam Scar Face and the Americana Baloot.
roll.png
( I however named Scar Face Harry since the last Harry Potter movie was released on the day she hatched and Harry had a scar. Baloot, I named Ron but that did not "fit" so I named her Larry which seems to fit.)
So I but the Americana with the bantam and they became fast friends! It was actually funny-when they first saw eachother, the Bantam wanted to dive under the Americana and the Americana had no idea what the bantam was! She had the most puzzled expression on her face! The Americana drank like a fish and the bantam followed suit. Then the event that I wanted most to happen did! The Americana taught the bantam how to eat-because appearently the mama hen did not! So after the two babies ate, drank and got to size eachother up, they went tromping on over to the towel/stuffed animal set up and proceeded to have a chat. Nice soft content peeps and whistles and general happy chick noises were exchanged and they nodded of to sleep!

So now I have to special chicks in a brooder I did not want and a pen full of Waste of Space Chickens that are being processed on Saturday before we go to the dump. I am done with them. I can't abide a hen that won't take care of her chicks.

OK sorry this was so long and thanks for letting me rant!
Have a great night!

I have a dumb broody who keeps switching nests, so once again I candled her eggs and put the developing eggs in the incubator. While candling with the kids I accidently dropped one and cracked it. Of course there was a chick developing. They were sad and I said we'd try to put wax on it and it would be ok. Then blood started leaking out the crack.
sad.png
These bloodies are driving me nuts! One of the eggs in the incubator from an earlier nest she abandoned had internally pipped so I shoved it under her. I hope it hatches so I can actually have eggs to eat again!

I thought the weathermen said it was supposed to be a little bit cooler today? It was evil, stinking HOT down here today! Not until maybe 5 or 6pm did it start feeling tolerable with a little bit of a breeze. I felt so bad for my critters, I ran another fan out there for them. It was 102 in the carport pre-fan, then it dropped to 82 by the time I locked them in for the evening. I sure hope this weather breaks real soon. Tomorrow sounds like it's going to be wicked too. I hope everyones critters will be ok.

Dornes, I sure hope your DH is feeling much better today. That heat is nothing to mess around with. I was out checking on the chickens every hour or two, and one of the times I came in, I felt just fine while I was reading posts on here, but then I noticed my heart was racing. Some time after that calmed down, I leaned forward to pet one of the cats & I almost fell on my face. I had a dizzy spell come completely out of nowhere. But luckily it went as quick as it came on. So please be careful out there, everyone. I had felt just fine, & was drinking water like crazy all day long. I take a water thermos outside with me always too.

Wow. TO, way to go with the A/C! I am glad you got some relief. And great pics. Congrats on all the trophies!

BBP, I am so sorry to hear about your DH's wallet getting stolen. That just makes me sick, but unfortunately with the economy being so bad & everyone out of work, those things are going to become more common. I used to keep my car unlocked with the keys in it when we moved out here. Now I've got the same 2 friends as Bigz. Times are changing, & not for the better. I agree with checking out the shelters first, you might be suprised what you find. There are so many good large breed pups out there just waiting for a loving home. I wouldn't just depend on a dog, though. Desperate people can do crazy things. I'd definitely get into the habit of locking up. Better to be on the safe side.

Deb, that cloud pic is awesome, and it does look like a shark going to bite, actually a few next to each other. And I sure wouldn't have bitten my lip at those kids: I would have bitten their heads off. Why aren't they staying with their mother anyway? Yes, it was me, & FT I think, that wanted some hostas if you have some to spare. You can wait til fall for mine. I'm in no rush. I'll get some raspberries dug up for you sometime-we can trade.
big_smile.png
I hope DH's tests go well.

Shanti, have a safe trip.

MLH, glad your critters/chicks are doing so well, sorry to hear about the worthless ones.

Where is FT???? She should be back from her road trip, even if she spent the night. I sure hope everything went ok. This weather is not the best for doing anything. Be safe, everyone! And sweet dreams.

good morning, I am still up.. just ate a piece of raspberry pie and will be heading to bed in a few minutes...

Isn't it sort of ironic how some people cannot bring themselves to kill an animal that killed a few of their birds,, while others can kill a hen for just being a lousy mother ? just making an observation..

It is quite common for chickens to recognize deformities in other chickens and then scorn and pick on them.. even as young chicks in the brooder. In the wild, horses will even kill a colt that appears unable to keep up with the herd..

we are having quite a lightning display yet, tonight.. I don't know how much rain we got, but I am betting well over an inch..

I did not see any storm damage on my drive home tonight,,

however our telephones are not working.. that usually means some of the peds are under water somewhere between here and town..

well, I'm off to bed, have to get up early ..

TO... Good job on the A/C and all those wins!

BBP.... Sorry about your stuff getting stolen! When I was a kid we raised GS. Great family dogs too. Every litter we donated one to the seeing eye program. I bring this up because the dogs that (for what ever reason couldn't make it as a guide dog) would get put up for adoption. Same is true (I guess) for police dogs. Not that there is anything "wrong" with these dog, just that they weren't suited for the job. Could be something to look into.

dkv... cool pic. .... If Lake Geneva is close enough for them to ask about.... where do you live? We're real close to L.G. ! I thought you were out near Janesville?

Jim.... if your corn has grown a foot.... you better tie it up before it hops away!

(sorry, had too... just don't tell the corn... it has ears you know

) Ok, I'll do it to myself

MLH... Broody behavior like that is why I was a bit worried about Jasmine and her brood. I am so grateful she turned out to be a good mom too! I think the "Good broodiness" has been bred out of most chickens. Glad you found a little partner for your chick. Hope the both do good!

Night!

I was gonna say, ya! I get the first post of the morning, and then proceeded to read all the posts on 2016 and it took nearly 10 mins!!
lol.png

I got up at 5:30, I think I got 6 hrs of sleep, but kept waking up every 2 or so hours... I am tired.
got laundry off the line, and folded, gonna get the house pullet fed, she now has free run of the front porch and is roosting with the parakeets.
Her owner is coming this Sunday to pick her up, she really wants to be near people, but still runs if you want to catch her, but settles down once you have her.

It was TOOO hot to try to ride last night. I truly wish I could get people up at 5 am since it seems to be the only time its cool.

Chickens are doing great in this heat and TO's ducklings have bonded to their new mom!!
Soooo any one want a trio of ducks? I think they had three moms on one nest so there were 17 babies. One is likely a pied and the other two are white. They are probably muskovy crosses.
Off to feed horses and chickens and then my day job. Then off to get a B-Day present for my friend, dinner of some sort and home, then dishes, feeding horses checking chickens and good T.V. and try to get more sleep.
I need more hours in my day!!

Stay cool today.
Carol
