Wish you could tell the hens from the roos. They are hard to sex at a young age. I would like some more blue egg layers !!!

All but one of the 9 guineas have hatched. I candled the last one and there is still life in there. They weren't due until tomorrow so waiting on just that one.
I had to help one out, or at least I thought i had to. It had pipped but for the longest time wastn't zipping. It lost some blood. It is still alive today but it's neck seems to have wry neck. Stays bent in one position

I think that is why it couldn't zip !!

There are all different colors, I'll try to get some pictures later.

Oh and I went downstairs to do silkie chores last night and I found what I was afraid I would find. Since I haven't been selling hatching eggs due to the heat I left some eggs for the broodys !!!! Well I have at least 4 white showgirl chicks. 1 white silkie chick and I'm afraid I am going to have tons more silkie & showgirls hatching soon !!! Anybody interested ???????? I don't know why I let them set on them. Then after a few days of setting I felt guilty if I would have taken them away.

Those little shavers are so dang cute.

They seem so much happier when raised by their mama's. So far so good with the 5 showgirl hens and one Roo (Daddy) in with the chicks. Just like kittens, don't you wish they would stay that small ???

I don't know what is cutier... guinea chicks or showgirl chicks !!!

Was down there until 4AM this morning. Decided to start banding them all. What a chore. I've decided to band the hens with even numbers and the roos with odd numbers. I can see now that I am going to run out of the odd numbers very quickly.
So far I have extra splash, white, blue and partridge roosters? Any one interested ????

I also am going to have to make some decisions as to who stays and who goes. Now that the young ones have started laying I can decide who to keep in my breeding program.
I will be coming down to Racine within the next month so if anyone would be interested in silkies, showgirls or bantam turkens let me know.

Gotta go take a nap, this night owl thing makes me tired during daylight hours !!!!!

Behind the shed... cow pasture and sheep pasture. It's really gotta be moved. I would love to keep it there but don't think the co-op would apprecaite me calling and asking if they can please come move the lp tank so I can put my chicken run in there.

Cooling off a bit out there now. Thank-goodness! I am ready for a nice day!

whew that heat is back... was so nice this morning like yesterday with the clouds and rain keeping it cool outside. Well I am excited. Hit Shopko in Madison today and they had their trees at 90% off. Have been bugging DH about cherry trees ( we have 3 cherry bushes we added last year) and they were $4 each... he really could not say no. So we have 3 semi dwarf varieties. I want as much fruit as possible on our property. Share some with the wildlife and some for us. We have only been here 5 years this fall, but our pear trees finally have some pears on them, I counted 8 apples on our 2 trees. And our strawberries performed well this spring and I see beautiful grapes on the grape trees... so we are getting there. I sacrificed the berry patch this year to the weeds... will have to work on that better next year. Tried to focus on the garden but that is half consumed by weeds. After planting half a dozen each of cucs, zuccs, yellow squash, winter squash pumpkins, and a few melons, I have tons of zuchs...a few yellows and one melon plant that seem to be successful. Cucs are there, but nothing on them... unless the woodchucks are eating them as they appear... it is in a fenced area, but who knows. Did a big harvest today so that was fun for the kids. tomatoes seem to be doing ok too. I guess I am pickling zucchs this year instead of cucs. DId that 2 years ago and they were pretty good. Not as crisp, but still good.

chickens are still complaining about the heat but they will survive. they get a big handful of frozen grapes a few times a day when I am home, so that seems to help.

Have a great sunday.

Happy early evening all!
The Salmon Favorelle here at the house is going to her new home tonight. I am bribing her with crickets from the pet store, she is in LOVE!!
I didn't sleep with cr@p last night, I went to bed around 5 am this morning, and slept for 4 1/2 hrs...

Pleasent Early Evening All.... the young ones are finally starting to venture out a little farther...glad for that. Some of the java women mingle right in with them showing them some good stuff. Those java hens are the nicest birds. The buckeye/java cross pullets are really pretty.....beautiful sheen in the sunlight....truly beautiful...I'll share pics in the future. Here is a pic of my dominant roo libby, named after Liberace...
