Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I just got back from town.. I got new bolts to mount the tower to the deck.. I am Americanizing this part.. I bought 5/16" x1" instead of #8mm 1.25.. less $$$..

the guy at the small engine shop told me that Poulan, Craftsman and Husqvarna all have the same mower deck.. I am going to check that out tomorrow.. the 4 7/8" pulley I wrecked is in the $50.oo range at the Husqvarna store.. I wish I had a lathe, I would work the end of the shaft down 6 thousanths to make it 3/4 " ..

Annie bought a cherry pie from U-Bake and baked it.. It was delicious with the ice cream on it and all..
even the crust was good..

Yes Dave, we wash our eggs.. I didn't buy this refrigerator to preserve chicken pooh..

Jim thanks for the reply, You were right, they were just about ready to lay. I didn't forget the kennel, just been super busy chauffering the boys to their appointments, sports practices and getting ready for school

I do realize I am not as "seasoned" as some of you chicken folk are, but I did read somewhere (here we go) that you shouldn't wash the poo off eggs because you will send the bacteria right through the shell in the process. Instead, you should take a very fine grained piece of sandpaper & wipe it off with that. If the egg is really soiled, they recommended tossing them.
Now that is just what I read. In Storey's Guide To Raising Chickens. Before reading this, I washed all my eggs, and I'm still here, much to Jim's chagrin.

Perhaps more research may be needed, but if you cook your eggs thoroughly, then

Congrats on the eggs Dave !!! Your investment is starting to pay off !!!! I SAID STARTING !!!!

Anyway, as far as washing what I do is just basically rinse them. You want to use water that is 20 degrees warmer then the egg so the pores don't open up and allow bacteria into the egg. I know it sounds backwards. You would think cold water but no it is warm. The warmer the better but of course not boiling or you'd be cooking them
lau.gif

Anyway you don't want to scrub them because you don't want to remove the "bloom" from the egg. You will know what I"m referring to when you either touch a newly layed egg or once you get them wet you will feel like they are a bit sticky. That is the natural protectant that nature put on.
So like I said I basically just rinse them in the hottest water my hands can stand then put them in the clean dish strainer and let them air dry. Then put them in the fridge. We try to keep the nest boxes up on clean fresh bedding which reduces the Poopy eggs but we do get them now and then. For those I take my thumb or finger and just scrape off the poop under the warm water. If they are real dirty of course we don't sell those, we either feed them to the dog or eat them ourselves.
Our Duck eggs tend to get a dirty film on them cause they go stomping in all kinds of mud throughout the day so those I do use a scrungy sometimes on but very lightly.

When I was at TSC the other day I was looking at ManaPro's Egg Wash. Thinking about trying it if I can find it online cheaper. Then I looked at their Poultry Protecter and water protector (or something similar to keep the water fresh, not sure of the name) and they ALL had the same ingredient !!!! So I am going to investigate that further to see if buying one would work for less cost.

My neighbor guy (30 yr old) puts them in the carton dirtier then all get out !!! I ask if he washes them before he cracks them in the bowl or fry pan !!! NOPE he said they are going to be cooked anyway !!!! Sure hope he likes them well done !!! He's young, he will learn, hopefully not the hard way !!! I had better set him straight before their baby gets here in the Spring !!!

Must have been typing at the same time CC !!

I've read that too and I believe it will get off the poop BUT if you don't rinse it or wipe off the dust you made that goes right into the fry pan or cake batter too !!! That is why I don't dry them with a towel or anything. I know I'm probably doing it wrong but ?????? I can't see putting dirty (even if they don't look dirty) eggs in a carton and then resusing the carton over and over again. If you bought new cartons for each dozen they run about $.50 each.

I also sell my eggs to a store that is a licensed Egg Grader and she is ok with how I wash them but doesn't want me to use any chemicals. So knowing what she does and she is ok with me rinsing them I'm ok with it too.
fl.gif
She also candles each egg before she puts them on the shelf looking for cracks , blood spots etc. I asked if she ever found any problem with mine and she said no. That is also how I find hairline cracks, when I'm rinsing. Make sure I"m wearing my glasses and do a egg inspection !!!! Butt dog is always right there on the floor besides me cause with my numb fingers I tend to drop some now and them and she is right there to lap them up !!!

Anyone else care to share ?? I'd be curious to hear too !!

had a surprise when I got to my unit today..........nope not the good kind........... one of our other tenants had a kitchen fire last night....nope didn't call us, she flagged me down this am to have me come to her unit to look
he.gif
she was planning to call us this am
roll.png
anyway not as bad as it could have been but bad enough, waiting for our adjuster to come and look and give us the price to fix... we will do it ourselves so it is done right. Started the grease on fire on the stove... one of her relatives who was there and had a bit much to drink was the one to do it. So the stove was toast, the floor was damaged, 3 cabinets, vent hood, some counter top, the lens for the kitchen light plus soot on the walls and ceiling of the kitchen
barnie.gif
DH figures it will be less than 5 grand but it is a project we weren't planning on

did get some more done at the unit I am working on and removed a bunch of door trim and have it repainted in our work garage so it can be put back in place once all the new doors are put up(yep last tenant destroyed doors and then didn't want us to be mad on how she left the unit
barnie.gif
)

have to go fill one more chicken waterer and then inside to have some ice cream cake

Poor DH ET. He is still out there working on the horse pasture. It's getting there !!!!
wee.gif
Said he'd be in shortly. We're going to Crandon to get Taco Pizza !!!
droolin.gif
Then tomorrow to the Mexican Resturant in Antigo for their Lunch special !!
droolin.gif
on our way back from getting hay. Yeah I celebrate more then one day !!!!
gig.gif
It's one way to get DH ET out and about !!!
Looks like my new pony could be a barrel racer !!! We still have her seperated from the others so I can catch her easier. Well today I tied her up while the farrier was working on the others. She ties pretty good but managed to set herself free got threw the gate by the other horses. Boy oh boy can that pony run !!! Wonder if I bought the right pony !!!! She needs to be maybe 20 yrs older !!!
lau.gif

DH ET said, in about two minutes I'm quitting !!! He was trying to catch her, she had the lead rope on and wanted to run with the big horses. Actually I think she is in heat or season or whatever they call it (TO, WCC ??) my memory isn't allowing me to recall that right now.

Anyway, she is a pistol. I'm afraid if I let her out, number 1) I'll never catcher her and 2) she'll get herself into bigtime trouble ie kicked, bitten or ???? She has no fear !!! Kinda like a teacup sized dog in with a St Bernard !!
lau.gif

Well better get dressed and ready to go !!

FT sounds like your newest addition is giving you a run for your money. Hope she settles down for you. Dave I was wondering the same thing about washing the eggs. I have been washing them off with a damp paper towel. FT I think it was you who said to rinse with hot water and let dry before putting them away, Thanks. The bee pictures are wonderful, what a talent you have.
I need some advice from the gardeners: We have grubs in the garden soil and in the lawn, DH wants to put DeltaGard(a.i. Deltamethrin) on the lawn and garden. It says it's safe for birds. I think it said all residual should be gone in 4 weeks. I will research more on this before he gets it. Just wondering what and if you use???

Thanks for any help on this subject. We got 4 eggs today

Good Night all and have a great day tomorrow
