My cousin down in Antioch could smell the smoke..... weird. We could smell it and see it for most of the morning, in the afternoon it would come and go according to wind changes.


Bombed the house this morning. It was very interesting jamming 4 cats into a giant pet carrier, jamming the 6 Budgies into a cat carrier, loading everyone into the car...... not something I want to repeat any time soon!

this better work!

After doing the clean-up from the morning, I managed to make one grocery bag of apples into applesauce. Only 2 more to go!!!

I hope I can get them done this week before they rot!

Right now the kids are watching Howard the Duck....... all I have to say is what was Lucas thinking when he made this one!!!!!

hi again...sure glad the rest of you popped in...I was beginning to think I was talking to myself all day! Glaad your birds went in Jim...guess they didnt care for another shower tonite?

I had 3 guineas in the tree but the rest went in along with the three pigeons that are left...I guess the hawk must have gotten one today, I had 4 yesterday and 5 two days before that! There are two more squeakers in the nest though...they are prolific birds!
I tagged a few birds today that I want to watch grow up. One is a neat looking bird that looks like a barred rock but has gold barred feathers. I think it's a roo. Then there are a bunch that look like little robins...so cute!
Finally ate my potatoes that I baked along with the corn for the salsa--I kind of forgot about them. THey were delish! I added some of the salsa on top with sour cream. MMMMMM! FT--my recipe that I made today is for corn and zucchini salsa. Is that the one that you want? I also make fresh salsa (tomato based) and canned salsa too. THe tomato ones seem to turn out different every year because of the different varieties of tomatoes I grow and also if I grow the peppers or if I go to pick them at the Locker. This year I think I need to pick...my peppers are all HOT! Weird...
I cant believe that you guys "up North" have to start covering the gardens already! I thought my season was short! I usually count on still picking in the garden until at least Oct. 1st; usually later

Well-I think I am going to retire for tonight...prolly dream about canning...

As for canning, I've barely started yet, and did you hear we might get patchy frost on Wed. & Thurs. nights? This has absolutely got to be the shortest growing season in recent history.

The smoke has been nonstop down here all day long. Hazy & stinky as all get out. At first I thought someone was burning leaves, but, duh, not too many leaves on the ground yet. I can't believe that fire has been burning for almost an entire month already.

It is a forest fire, Jim, in a very isolated area where they can't get any fire trucks to. Our weatherman just said that it might continue to burn for another month unless they get some much needed rain or snow! And I have a neighbor that burns everything imaginable too, TO. Drives me nuts. Like I want to be breathing that.

I agree Deb has a good idea with the card business. I remember way back she said she had an idea on a business, & her DH even thought it was a good idea, but she never did reveal what that idea was. Those darn cards at all the stores are really getting kinda pricey, which suprises me in this electronic age with e-cards. I hope you can make a go of it, Deb. You'll have to let us know when you get it up and running.

I canned zucchini salsa a few years ago. It was really good. Sure wish I could find what I did with the recipe.

I'd love your recipe for canned salsa, TO, if you wouldn't mind sharing. And I'll have to look up that vanilla pear sauce. Now that sounds yummy! And do I ever have the pears this year.
Hopefully I can get most of my tomatoes canned tomorrow. I sure hope we don't get any frost. This is just way too darn early, at least for us down here.

I did all our laundry today, and hung it up, 5 loads all at the same time, although 2 are dryer loads.
I then went to find a lost hay knife for my client at his barn and rode his 3 yr old that I broke out earlier this summer.
Fed my horses then came home and made a delish dinner...
I don't do canning. I should, but I just don't know what to do with canned tomatoes or other canned (stuff in jars) veggies. I usually only make enough food for 2 people, and cook with a lot of fresh stuff. Or cans of veggies. I don't like mushy tomatoes except for stewed that I put into pasta dishes now and again. I don't have enough tomatoes to can to make pasta sauce, and I don't do corn in salsa... too much of a west coast girl for that.

Speaking of dinner...I made Panko- herb encrusted pork chops tonight with sesame chicken rice and green beans, and natural vanilla icecream for desert.

Didn't get my canning done but I started the sweet potato soup. I'll finish it today (your day...lol) so we can have it Thur. Had to plug some holes in the old part of the fence... 5 hens figured out how to go under the fence by the grapes. BTW for some odd reason there are NO grapes lower than 2 ft up! Wonder why? LOL

They have to jump for them now!

Well, I didn't see that anyone lost any birds (other than TO's pidgin) and no disasters (I hope) so off to bed I go! Hope all is well! Night!

BTW.... yes, we had MN smoke here!

BBP what a great photo! On the edge of Colorado Springs once on our way to work during a nice snow storm we encountered 8 horses out for a stroll, wish I'd have had a camera then! And once in rural Illinois I walked up the drive to find the neighbors hogs had escaped and had a small car surrounded, what a sight

FT, never even thought about puzzles, what a great idea, I'll have to keep that in mind.

CC DH also mentioned that he was concerned with all the e-cards it might be tough to make a go of it, but I have a couple of specific markets in mind and people still love to send cards, it's like a 7 billion dollar a year biz... I'm not greedy I'm just looking for a modest income

I've agreed to start taking the pictures of the new puppies at Furry Babies in Janesville for their facebook page as I get to retain the rights to the pics, never know when you'll need a cute puppy picture!

Cindlady I've never heard of sweet potato soup, sounds delish.

Vanilla pear sauce, salsa, applesauce and all this talk of canning and the good food on here makes me ravenous! Can't wait til next year so I can get a garden in! Can't believe they are talking frost already! I better get to F&F this week and find some long johns!!!

Good Morning All! Yup TO CC's right I'm retarded [sp]? Jim, Donny thought about the fluid too. There's a 55 gal barrel on the 3 point that's empty think if he had some block or sand in it it would help. He's an excitable boy. No patience! His big Case has been out of commission for almost 2 months and it's really peeing him off. Told him he's gonna break that lil tractor then I won't buy it from him. He's hard on equipment. dk I would buy some chicken xmas cards! Maybe 2 doz. with 3-4 different pics. PM me or post some pics to choose from if you want to do that. L's mom down in Elkhorn said she could smell smoke, we had it here too. Leaves are fallin here but don't see any color change said the color blind guy. Could pick and make more grape jelly but really don't need it as bad as next years wood needs to dry. Could pick some corn from the field and put that in the freezer but it's real close to being over ripe. Or so I've been told

good morning, I will be off in a few minutes as soon as I get finished on here and finish my cuppa.. have a ton of chicken feed to pick up.. then I have to clear a dry spot in the shed to store it..

Annie has had a few puzzles made from photos.. I don't know where she takes them though.. once it was an aerial photo of our homestead.. she gave each of the kids a copy , but did not include the picture.. they had to put it together to see what it was.. then they could frame it like a picture..

she did the same to me with a picture of my first big royal palm tom turkey..

and she gave Ken a puzzle of his puppy..

I know my sisters send cards via snail mail.. a lot of people do..

Deb, if you decide to do puzzles, perhaps you could include the proper sized picture frame as a kit for people to give as gifts ..

and don't forget to sign your photos.. not a vanity thing, just sort of a copyright insurance.. and besides, who knows, you might become famous..

Dr H, I had a 55 gal drum on the back of my 8N.. had a rod run through it just above center,, It was filled with sand or concrete. I never knew for sure. at least it was topped off with concrete.
then it was lifted with the hydraulic arms and held up with the stabilizing arms.. It swung forward and back, but not side to side.. fluid in the tires is expensive.. I have it, but the tractor came that way.. I only add my back blade for extra weight..

TO, you better hatch a lot more squabs if you are going to feed that hawk all winter..
