Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi all...

DrH....Too bad about the fishin' bet the cold spell scared 'em deep. Seems once they go deep for winter they stay 'till spring.

TO... I wish I could consistently get 6 doz. a week... even at that it would be less than half of what I could sell.
hmm.png
I am going to charge 2.25 for the next 2 months then up to 2.50 in Dec. The farmers markets are charging 3.50 to 4.00!!!! I keep mine lower because they are so mixed in size shape and color. But then, some people prefer them like that! One woman where my son works gets 2 doz. a week and loves them for baking. They're from Croatia and my eggs remind them of the eggs they would get. They want to know if I ever have chickens to sell for butcher too.
tongue.png
some day? I think I need to plan on expanding! Would love to see Turks baby! BTW... did you ever figure out what went wrong with him? He was cool but I just couldn't have him here at that time.
sad.png
He got too aggressive/ amours for what few hens I had then. Still say say he looked like a Turkey! LOL Phyllis is very cool looking! Looks like a road runner! Beep beep! Sure hope the find that guy who hit your DD's BF's car!

Robin... I have 1 leghorn... the only one I have that lays white eggs!
tongue.png
and yes, she's rather "flighty"!

Rainq... Cute kids!

Jim... Did you glue your finger together? That's what I would have done
idunno.gif
Dang, where are you going to put next weeks butcher? I think Annie needs a math lesson if she thinks she can put 45 chickens in place of 40 lbs. of berries
lau.gif
Going to have to call the kids to clean out your freezers! BTW... My chest freezer is all but empty now... plenty of room for whatever... I could keep some of that excess for you
hide.gif

FT(Frozen) Since you are coming down here anyway, why not check down here for a cap? I would love Bunnies for Freezer camp.... but that's a critter I get attached to so I would not be able to care for them long enough to raise for butcher
sad.png
But I love eatin' 'em! Dam# it!
barnie.gif
I would be interested in some oddball hens!

raim.... Your mom sound like my in-laws were. Ironically, she couldn't cook worth a dam#! Guess that's why DH will eat almost anything... no matter how bad it is!
sickbyc.gif

Carol... If she will earn her keep with eggs I'll take her! Who knows. If I match her up with one of my 4 roos maybe I'll get some blue eggs from the chicks! Would you like a Cochin Roo? I can get a pic if you like.

Thought I lost a bird tonight.... she was hiding... came out when I threw down the nightly snack! LOL I got really ticked at a rooster tonight.... collected eggs, and only found 8
hmm.png
I set the basket down to get the feed and he decided to try to mount a hen next to the basket... knocked it over and broke 3 eggs!
barnie.gif
Like I can afford to loose any!!!
somad.gif

We decided we got to find a cheap way to get more coop space! The way the shed/coop is set up can't add more coop space and have access to outside without closing off the main door. And too much of a pain to add on. Guess it's something to work on over the winter. DH is still trying to talk me into goats too. I really like goats but I know what it takes to keep them and unless they were dairy goats and we could make money on them, we really can't afford them. Ahhh.... city boy
love.gif
He is hooked on the chickens though! I'm rather surprised about that. At first it was just something to keep me happy.... now he want's more! Thing is... I do 90% of the work! He gives them the morning mash and lets them out. He hauls the feed to the coop (most of the time) but that's it. Oh well, enough rambling...

Looks like I get first post of the day!... better sleep (or nap) people are coming today to but in a lift and a few other "handicap helpers" for DS#1. Guess they'll be here by 10:30

Night/morning!

Good Morning All! FT there are advantages to being color blind that $200 topper would work just fine for Jim and I.
lol.png
Used to get dressed for school and mom would usually say You can't wear that!
hu.gif
Think Jim might need another freezer. TO supper looks delish! Agree with Cind, Phyllis looks like a road runner. Did I understand that right after the guy denied side swiping him then he rammed him 3 more times and drove off?
ep.gif
dk good to hear from you! Sorry your working all those hours! But just think of all the longy's you can buy.
lau.gif
Think it was Robin that said her birds were going through a hard moult too. Now the slw's are loosing their feathers too. Came home to empty nest boxes. No eggs for 3 days now. Good thing it's not spring they'd all be in the freezer. [that was me talking tough] And some new chicks would be on the way! Wish I could afford to put up another coop. Couldn't believe all the dropped passes last night. But the Pack pulled through. Think there will be some butts on the carpet today. Got the last of brocolli cut yesterday and will put that in with some chicken tonight then I tilled the garden and got the lawn mowed. Spent the aft watching various football games. Pulling the deck off the mower and cleaning up the tiller for storage today. Should wash the Jeep too. Lotso bugs!

Good Morning Fellow Wisconsinites.....
Just thought I'd stop by to say hello, and let anyone know who maybe looking for a nice Delaware, Barred Rock or Speckled Sussex rooster for their flock I have 14 left that are the nicer ones, That I absolutely hate to have to butcher, especially by Boy Friend as my hubby calls him, hehehe he is a beautiful SS, who coo's and clucks to me every time I come in eye sight. his name is BF pictured here with a couple of his buddies who thinks he's insane for clucking to a human. If nothing else you all will get a kick outa the picture.

Here are the other boys all pretty good I have a couple with crooked toes that will be butchered this weekend most likely, for it needs to cool down here a tad. We have been having awxsum weather haven't we. I actually wish it would stay like this till spring. I for one am not looking forward to cold below zero weather, though the snow is pretty when it comes, I'm getting to old to like the cold that comes with it. anyway please pm if you would like a rooster to cover your spring hens.

Have a great day all. Kim

good morning,, DrH, your mother must have loved you more than mine did me.. My Mom never stopped me from wearing anything.. LOL

I think my next freezer will be a commercial walk-in type. then I can get rid of all these small ones.. I wonder how much it would cost to build one ?? Hmmmmm.....

DrH, my dad would say, "How are you holding your face ?" if I wasn't catching any fish.. As a kid, that was very frustrating to figure out how to "hold my face." My dad could catch fish in a toilet.. To his dying day, he would not give up his secret fishing spots to anybody.. He figured everybody should find their own..

Cind, not going to glue my fingers together, might lose two at a time that way.. I shouldn't get much of a scar from this cut.. My knife was extremely sharp so the cut was nice and clean.. Like a paper cut..

Cind, not much profit in goats.. I had them until 1977. drank the milk, butchered a few.. one spring we had 22 babies.. nothing cuter than them.. after we got rid of all the goats, I quit drinking milk.. I can not tolerate slimey cows milk..

goat meat is considered poor man's venison.. horse meat is called Missouri elk..

Carol, how did DH"s haircut turn out ? metal shears, wire brush. a little trim around the ears with a hedge clipper ?

I like that pic of the Del pair.. You should sell it to a hatchery for their catalog..

Your BF is one smart roo.. sing and coo to the lady, that will keep me out of the frying pan.. LOL

Good morning! Nice looking roos Ghost! If I didnt have waaay too many that I need to deal with this fall I would be sorely tempted! That Speckled Sussex is nice looking...and I am a sucker for anything black and white too! *sigh* how come feed is soooo expensive? I would like to just have some of everything! Even DH was likeing the Blue Am flock keeping him company while he was reading in the yard this weekend!
Speaking of DHs...Cind you are lucky yours does as much as he does! If I ask for feed to be carried down you would think it was a 4 hour project...then he usually throws it on the ground and it is that much harder to pick up to dump into the various barrels...my two wheeled wheelbarrow is my best friend let me tell you! After the garden cart started rotting I bought the 2 wheeler and I LOVE it! Soon I am going to have to get another bin for it though...it has some cracks and holes now from carting big rocks around! (but the rain doesnt pool in it any more!
smile.png
)

Yes FT--we do get our share of Beta Carotene around here! We love those orange veggies...could eat them every night. The tomatoes are starting to not slice real well any more...at least the "Mortgage Lifter" variety. They are a very soft tomato but oh so good! Once you pick them you better eat them right away! Thanks for the links BTW...(NOT) I love those Asian pears! I tried to get a tree going from seed--no luck. But now that I know someone here in WI is successfully growing them perhaps I will invest in a tree...Elaine??? DO you grow them? (yes it is STILL too warm to do any butchering....I am not complaining!) At this rate maybe December?
roll.png

Jim--so does that mean she is making pies with the blackberries? Where will she put THEM? Maybe jelly to can...then you can get to work and build some more shelving for canned goods! Hey, I have an idea...if you want to get rid of some of those berries I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to have them!!!! THen I could can them up as jam, jelly or pie filling...my big freezer is only half full right now! (getting ready to butcher...) I would even bring you a jar of jam to the bash in spring.....my goats chewed all the leaves off of my thornless blackberry this year...I have had it in the ground for 4 years and have yet to pick a berry from it. We just dont have the right weather here to grow them...blackcaps are no problem of course but those blackberries seem to like the Western part of the state way better! One year we went riding near Neilsville on the gas pipeline and the wild ones were all over....I thought they were big black caps until I got off and took a look. I almost "dropped my teeth" (there's Granny again!) when I say they were blackberries!!!! I think I gorged myself full! The horse I was riding liked them too!
DD25 just came down looking for Iron rich food...she is giving blood this afternoon and always gets turned back for low iron...well, we just had a long discussion about boy friend troubles....*sigh* So glad I am not in that boat any longer! Now i have forgotten all I wanted to reply to! Darn!

DrH--too bad about the fishing! There have been a ton of people on the lake in town and on the river...I still have not wet a line! I always think I should take my pole along to my client's and cast a few off her seawall. THere are always boats out there right by her place...wonder what they are catching? OK it is a plan...I will see where DH is hiding the rods and take one along with me today...I guess I will have to call him and see where they might be....I hope not in the camper--I will never find it then! Only problem is that the river is so brown I dont know if you should really eat anything caught out of it!

Oh yeah CC--you are welcome to start thinking like Jim any time! I am tired of doing it!
lau.gif
There sure were a lot of motorcycles running by my place all weekend! I was thinki9ng about you guys...you still havent come to see that goat...he is waiting for you!
Cind--you have to ask H&R about the genetics for Ameracaunas to see if you would get any blue egg layers...I dont think so but I get it confused all the time! Did I tell you about the sister of Little Turk that has muffs a beard and a tophat? I wonder what kind of eggs she will lay? Those birds have so much mixed into them it isnt funny! They must be reverting to the wild type by now...all I know is that they sure are hardy! Funny that you thought the other sister looked like a road-runner...that is what I thought too! Especially after I took this pic! I had to go back and see if I had posted this one or the other one...
46457_img_4065.jpg

Maybe I should change her name from Phyllys to RR?
Carol--did you get your brakes fixed? Now that I know where you are I think we should get together and ride again! Although I couldnt believe it...I ripped through an entire tank of gasoline on Saturday!
ep.gif
I need a new truck! Glad you found your "lost" hen!
OK I better get moving here...lots to do before I go to work....and I am sure I will have Jim's post to read now...AND these flies are driving me crazy!!!! TIme to put up some more fly tape for sure!
Have a fabulous day! Weatherman just said we might be in for some rain tomorrow....Terri O

ETA: Yup Jim's post (and a few others) was there to read...he said:
Cind, not much profit in goats.. I had them until 1977. drank the milk, butchered a few.. one spring we had 22 babies.. nothing cuter than them.. after we got rid of all the goats, I quit drinking milk.. I can not tolerate slimey cows milk..

Yup--there's another similarity! Did that same thing and now I cant stand cow's milk either! Well, FRESH from the cow ain't bad but no store milk for me....Geez--will it EVER stop?

My uncle used to tell me all the time that I wasn't holding my lips right. He used to out fish me all the time, the BFF does too.

I can hold my own with Laura thankfully and I always beat my youngest DD. Guess it's just the way it is. Well got a cake made, dishes done, cat boxes cleaned, and a few other things done think it's nice enough outside to wander out to see what I can accomplish.

Hi TO<< maybe I should call you PU (Parallel Universe) and now we have CC to contend with ??

As we speak, Annie is thawing 40 some odd pounds of blackberries.. 10 gallons of wine is in the making.. A couple of years ago I made about 50 pints of blackberry, and grape jelly.
still have quite a bit left..

I built a basement full of shelves long time since.. In one room alone, the fruit room, we can store 300 jars..

last night we put 5 gallons of grape juice in a carbouy to start fermenting.. today Annie gave the strained seeds to the chickens and birds.. by noon there should be some "happy" birds tripping around the yard. LOL

Annie is taking inventory of what birds we will keep and which are going..
Here is what we have to trim down to 100 birds :
13 turkeys, under the age of 13 weeks..
10 turkeys, 5 toms , 5 hens
13 muscovy ducks, 3 one year old hens 10 juveniles
10 jungle fowl 4 roosters 6 hens
4 sebastopol geese, 2 pairs
5 toulouse geese, 2 pairs and a spare
5 peacocks 2 pairs and a juvenile
37 guineas, 10 one year old ones, 27 juveniles
2 roosters 1 Delaware, 1 Blue laced red wyandotte
16 barred rock pullets (estimated count)
16 Delaware pullets (estimated count)
10 assorted laying hens (judging by the # of eggs per day)
14 Americauna chickens (estimated count)
75 quail (at least, estimated count)

My BFF can outfish me anytime, too.. I took a nephew fishing one time.. He outfished me,, I never took him again..

.........have to go pick up branches all around the yard.. a job long overdue.. then I am going to grub out some birch stumps, If they are rotted enough..that should make the old tractor snort.. there are about 10 of them..
