Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good morning, and what is up with byc? I just read my post that was lost last night !! and I also did not get the heads up email that there are messages on cheeseheads.. I use that url to log in.. so I had to go to my trash can and revive an old email..

I let all the birds out today and stood and looked them over real good.. they all look so fat and prime, with no molting going on.. even old Tommy has his tail feathers all in and fanned out.

the peacocks display what they have, except they won't
get their extra tail feathers until spring..

today is coop moving day.. I hope the ground is not too wet.. I have to take the tractor and back up a slope for one of the coops.. they are very heavy and I lift them with the snow bucket fitted with forks that I made just for lifting them.. makes the rear tires kind of light..

then as long as the sun stays out I am going to tackle the rest of the mess in front of the garage.
I was going to elliminate my burn pile, but somehow it is about as big as a house again.. I cannot burn it until there is snow on the ground.. and besides that is where the turkey lays her egg every day..

DrH. you saying going to the woods today made me think of a joke about a lumberjack named Dooda.. ..

I cannot post replies or PM, so I am going to try "edit" and see what happens..

TerriO, nice to see thay we are back in synch.. I did feed 50/50 ground corn and oats to our meat chickens back in the 1970"s.. we kept a few of the cornish/rock hens through the winter for eggs..

nice buck DrH, did you ever wonder what you would get if the camera snapped another picture just seconds after the first one?

I should get a camera.. I am sure we have nocturnal visitors.. almost every night the dog starts barking at something.. He is in the house so we shush him.. but he must be able to hear or smell something we can't.. whatever it is, it does not turn on any of the sensor lights outside .. I suspect he can hear the coyotes singing.. last night when I was closing up for the night, the coyotes were harmonizing.. then all the dogs in the neighborhood chimed in..

If a dog on the east coast barked and then all the dogs within hearing range barked, how long would it take to travel all across the land to the west coast ?

Tiki,

I am quoting here:

https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=156772

crop and gizzard impaction will produce hardened crop, bird will refuse food and look slugish... for crop impaction you can put a bit of oil into the bird, massage the crop and hope whatever blocked the crop will break away and pass through, withhold food during treatment until crop is cleared. Oil and a lot of luck is the only treatment for gizzard impaction.

Sour crop can be the side effect of the first 2 problem, food in the crop starting to ferment and turn sour.... this comes with a ripe smell coming out of the chicken. Withhold pellet/ hard food, feed yoghurt and water, for myself I "rinse" the chicken by pumping water into the crop, hold the bird upside down and squeeze the water out (repeat 3-4 times).

Treatment duration depends on how bad the blockage is. If caught early, you can get things moving within an hour. If left to ferment, it may take a few days. If the bird is healthy and well fleshed, he can go safely for about one week without food. After that things start to go downhill. Always offer water though.

This may help...

Why a mule ? Curious minds wanna know !!

We are getting a horse for my son who suddenly decided he loves to ride. He's been taking lessons for a couple of months. I have always wanted a donkey or mule. I'm going to keep goats with whatever animal we get. I worry about coyotes with the goats so a mule seems like the perfect fit. The more I look at them, the more I want one. I also want a Norwegien Fjord, but I don't have that kind of money!

Good afternoon! Chilly here...Tiki--I always wanted a mule too...then I got my mare and when she had her surprise baby he looked just like a mule when he was born...he wasnt though! So now I have 5 horses and still no mule! Maybe sometime in my life I will get one...
Jim--funny about the coyotes....my dogs must hear them singing every morning at 6:30 cause that's when they start howling along...we call then "the Wolf Pack" when talking about the whole group...speaking of...I think I hear them outside now! DH took the whole bunch to the dogpark when he got home at 5. He likes to take them every night to wear them out. Great, glad I bathed them last night. Maybe I will get into the habit of doing that every night too? NAH!

So tonight is pork roast (I thought it was beef when I took it out this morning) brussels sprouts with HM hollandaise sauce and hash browns with peppers and mushrooms. I really wanted to do some baking today but didnt get home until 5...

Well, guess I oughta get those sprouts picked off the stem...only 8 more to go in the garden. THis one was actually starting to regrow sprouts at the bottom where I had picked earlier in the season. I had one last year that started regrowing in the spring! Weird...later all! Terri O

Chilly Evening All.... nice pic of the Buck Doc. Hope he shows during hunting hours!

Thanks for the link with the crop surgery CC. Nice to see it successfully done. Quite the pile of straw.

Shared 2 grocery bag of beets with the neighbor today. One for him and one for his daughter. I think Suzie is gonna can the rest in qt jars to share with the kids. I still have to clean up all the tomato cages and other plants that are done.

I hear you when it comes to church politics Ken....talk about test your faith, eh!

Gonna take Suzie out for FFF tomorrow....It's 39 years of wedded bliss for us. Still think that should be my age. Where in the heck did the time go?
