Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Just curious... Do any of you sell hatching eggs or chics? It occurred to me that finding hatching eggs that I can drive to pick up would have a better hatch rate than shipped ones. Or if I could buy chicks from trusted sellers it would be worth a drive for sure. Just wondering since I am new here...

Just so you know, by hatching your own eggs, you have no idea if you're getting hens or roos, and depending on the breed, some roos can get pretty mean once they mature, no matter how sweet they are when they're young. And if you get as lucky as FT, you might get more roos than hens.

Where are you roughly located? There is a guy that travels around the state that sells female chicks of many different breeds. They're more expensive than say, TSC, but I got 4 from him last year & they were all healthy. H&R sells chicks too, and some others on this thread, if you know what breeds you're looking for?

Celtic Chic: Do you know if this guy with the pullets, ever makes it over to the west side of the state?
I think so. I know he goes down to IL & up by FT.

I'm going to be looking for his ad on CL. When I see it, I'll post it. It has his cell # on it.

ETA: what breeds are you looking for?

Seriously?! I have never heard of such a thing, but what a wonderful idea! Do you happen to know this person, what he sells? It sounds super awesome to be honest!

Bf4, he drives around the state & picks up sexed chicks from various hatcheries. I went to 7 Mile Fair down here and he literally had hundreds of female chicks, of dozens of different breeds. Common hatchery breeds, though. Keep checking CL in your area around March-May. Otherwise, I could pick you up some & we could ferry them to you. What breeds are you looking for?

CC-Im looking for the following sexed pullets chicks (and vac'd for Mareks):
Frizzle
Brahma
Sussex
Salmon Faverolle
Easter Egger
Blue Andalusian
SL Wyandotte

I think one of each for now-then figure out which breeds I prefer before adding on...I am hoping to split these into two batches to raise at a time this spring.

Eggs are nice but more importantly for me right now is I want friendly pets :) One of my favorites currently is a banty mix of some sort. The breeder told me Cochin...but not sure that fits. Petunia is a yellow golden color, with feathered feet, and a cute lil beard/cheek muff.,,,,,She follows me everywhere. So a couple of the above breeds as bantys would be kewl as well.

(Plus Im holding out for 1 or 2 of BBPs Lav Orp's)

One of these days I'll get some, hopefully from FT (and not just roos, FT).

Sorry. My internet is real pokey this evening.

The banties he has are all straight run. And none of them are vaccinated for anything.

I know he carries EEs, brahmas & some kind of wyandotte. As soon as I see his ad on CL, I'll be sure to post it. He usually lists breeds.

As far as having friendly breeds, I think any breed has the potential of being friendly if you have the time & patience to spend socializing them. Children are usually good at doing that if they like animals.

Hay all !!! And I meant Hay not Hey!!! Live on a farm ya know !!

Anyway, I found this thread very interesting. Something I might do when I pair up my birds.
https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/261208/sex-linked-information

I have Domonique, Barred Rock, Cuckoo Maran hens I could pair up with my Rhode Island Red, Black Ameraucana, Buff Orphington, Black Australorp Roosters to make Black Sex Link chicks.

Weird that you were just posting about chicks and getting just hens. I don't know if I would have the guts to cull the little boys though. But if I sold the eggs as black sex links the hatcher could do that, it would be out of my hands.

Using the Black Ameraucana Roo would make Sex link Olive egger's (I think or at least some of the hens would lay olive eggs)

There is a guy on CL that is selling chicks right now. I'll find it and see where he is.
