Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

ok I read an artical on silkies VERY interesting, and I think I know why my silkie is acting wierd. silkies have a hole in their head (skull) and when pecked in the top of the head (like mine did) it can cause brain damage (showing as wry neck) ???? IDK if this is all true and accurate but I know that my silkie had an infection in the riped open area on the top of her head it was BAD! what I'm figuring is it healed closed with an infection and now causing brain damage. we're gonna make her last days queen like. feeding her plenty of vitamins and lots of love. oh and the other girls are sitting on lots of eggs, HOPEFULLY some of them are her babies.

later all

Here I am for another try.. I had a post about ready to go this morning and then I did a spell check. it erased the whole post.. either I did something wrong, or I am a really really bad speller.

question for cockatiel owners.. Is there a way to determine gender? we were told that the males make the most noise. well. In that case the two " brothers" are brother and sister.
one of them will wolf whistle at you and DD#2 taught him a few bars of a song..

I found out a bit more about those poultry guard puppies. they are cross breed great pyrenese, and some other breed I never heard of...

I tossed 18 goose eggs that didn't hatch.. there are 4 due on the 6th, and then MAYBE I can finally turn off the bator for a few weeks..

One good thing about running the bators in the winter time.. I do not have to turn on any heaters in the basement. this room is always about 80F.

It sure was a nice day today.. I went for a short walk with the dogs.. I could really feel the sun on my back,, Aaaahhhh,,,,,.. those southern people just don't appreciate the sun like we do,,eh?.

Good evening! Feels like I havent been on here forever! I had much to read and much to comment on...it only I could remember! LOL! DH is mad because I sold that horse back to its original owner...just cant please the donkey!

CC I read that on the SOP thread I think...I will take a look and see if I can find it for you. It was extremely interesting! Somebody asked about chicks you can tell apart at hatching...there are a few breeds that you can do this with. But I am with Bigz...why the hurry? FT--I had people over her this morning buying ducks and they wanted roosters! I had to send them to my neighbor's place because I dont have any more to sell! I am sure I could have found a few to send with them but I really didnt want to sell any of the Blue Ams until I see how they are nearer to spring.

I had a bad thing this morning...I found a pile of feathers up in my barn...I knew they were from the mama hen. I went downstairs after feeding the horses and she was downstairs with quite a smaller tail and no babies :( I was sad that they perished...so I will not be able to tell you Bigfam if they were indeed all girls or not. SHe is still clucking around and will lay a new next I believe. I have the trap set up there and I sure hope I catch the culprit! Of course I had the "I shouldas." I Shoulda chased her downstairs with the rest...water under the bridge now...

I put the rooster and the hen from the quail pen ought into a little pen with 2 roos and 2 hens. They started right in on them! I think they ironed it out OK. THe youngsters were hiding behind the window I put in there. I also got the feed bags stapled on outside my new coop to keep the wind out...they will probably be roasting in there tonight! Ha--roast chicken for dinner! (really tonight) It was so nice outside I ate my breakfast sitting on the porch steps...figured I should absorb some vitamin D while I can! Decided then to rake the side yard and gather dog poop. 4 muck buckets in that little space! There was much plant and leaf debris too though! Now it looks better at least! The back yard still has too much ice and mud to rake right now...I even have dog blankets on the line! I love sunny days...

Welcome back Dooner! I hope you can stop more often. It is hard to keep up with all of us when you only pop in a few times a month (or year!)
Well, I better get that chicken up here and into the oven...Roast chicken, mashe potatoes with garlic, baked sweet potatoes (and butter, lime juice, cilantro and brown sugar) MMMM and some veggie...I think I have fresh broccoli or maybe a salad. Hey I have to tell you guys this...when I was shopping last week I picked up some organic lettuce in the plastic tup cause it was only $1.49! So when I opened it (to feed my tortoises) I tasted it. WOW! It was spring lettuce and herb salad...tasted just like the stuff I grow in my garden! I couldnt believe it because the stuff in the bag all tastes the same! I had no idea...so now I am stuck on it and paid $4 for 5 oz yesterday!

I cant wait until spring and I get mine planted!
Later! Terri O

Why I didn't glance at the poster's name before starting to read a post is beyond me. You'd think I would know better by NOW! But I blame it on not yet being used to Jim being back. Yeah, that's it. Anyway, the screen got a good dousing. Thanks Jim.

TO, that just stinks about those chicks. Saddened me greatly.

At least one of them made it. Love that chick greatly, Bf4. (I know you will).

I used to raise and breed cockatiels-if you post or send me a pic I should be able to tell you if its a male or female. What color is it? Greys are the easiest to tell fyi. Anyhow, things to look for, males are brighter in color, and cheeks are a brighter stronger orange. Yellow on the head is vibrant as well. Males tend to have bigger eyes and squarer heads. Females are duller, smaller, and scold more. Hope that helps?

Terri o, just wanted you to know i still have your carrier. Will get it back to you.

Dooner

Thanks for remembering...I am planning on the bash this May--are you going too?

Hey Jim--If your cockateils are normal colored ( not lutino or albino) you should be able to tell by the tail feathers...if they are solid it is a boy; if striped it is a girl.
Easy Peasy!
Terri O--on the way out to do chores

Cockatiels feathers under the wings and tail feathers for the greys or lutinos will be barred for females or juveniles; males will be solid. If its a pearl-its a female (as
pearl is sex linked).....if its a pied then you will need to go off of the face coloring.
