Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I saw the saddest thing today.... we went over to my in-laws to deal with some trees my DH had cut down (stacking the firewood). After we had been out in the woods for a while my youngest DD said to me that she was sad, and so I asked her about what? She said that she had spotted some dead bees in the snow on out way out to the woods. I thought this was a little odd since bees should not be out when there is snow so on our way back to the house I asked her to show me where she saw the bees, and so all along the trail we were stopping every couple of feet for a bee...... apparently during our warm spell the neighbor's bees thought it was warm enough to go foraging..... and many of them froze to death on the way back home. When we were back at the house I took a look at the undisturbed yard and every 3-4 feet or so you could see a little dark spot on the snow. All little fuzzy honeybees.

Poor bees.

CC.... You beat me to it! LOL... I saved the list too.

Bl4... That is sad about the bees. I wounder how many bees around the area (state) were lost this year? It's been so hard for bee keepers as it is... this is going to be a tough blow.

DrH... So far we still plan on getting it! Just got work out how and when!

No FT? she must be playing with her new piggies all day! Hummm.... maybe after she brought home 2 OMDH made her move in with them!

Well, a long interesting day trying to catch up with things. Then about 3:00 DS came and said there's a bird in the chicken tractor and it dosen't look like a chicken. (The tractor was open and not being used) I went out to look and as I got closer there were allot of feathers and the bird looked allot like a HAWK!!! Apparently one of my PRs ran in trying to ditch the hawk and it fallowed her in. Now he was stuck. I watched him a bit and it looked like it may have hurt it's leg a bit since he seemed to stumble on it. I called the DNR who got me the number of the local rescue and they came and got it. It looked young and a parent was hanging around the whole time it was trapped. The gal who came and got it said if it looked OK she'd release it Mon. in the area. Last week one of them got the neighbor behind us pet chicken. The kids were devestated! Guess we got to work harder on hawk deterents.
hmm.png
I gave what was left of my hen to the rescue lady, she has 7 hawks and a horned owl to feed. I figured she was dead anyway best not to waste.

Well, guess I'll stoke the fire so it's warm when DH gets up the try to sleep.

OH... found this if anyone is interested... I know it's a ways to go for most of you but...
I'm getting my order Wed.

Welcome to BYC Apyl!! Are you getting the chicks by mail or are you going to a feed store for them? Here is my 2 cents! If your getting them through the mail from a hatchery, Me, I'd wait till about April, maybe May if we get slammed late with winter weather this year. It depends on how the weather is getting on and how cold it stays because the chicks travel through the Post office system and can take a day or two to get to you.
If you pick up your chicks then you can get them earlier. If you don't mind a little travel there is an awesome hatchery down in Waterloo (outside of Madison) called Abendroth's. Nothing too exotic but Rick has extremely healthy chicks. I have some of his Gold Stars now in my brooder and they are really nice pullets.
The nice thing by picking them up is that the chicks are not stressed from a long trip through the postal system. They are with you in a nice climate controlled car for a shorter distance so there is little change of anything arriving to the house DOA.
There is also the hatchery down in Beaver Dam....ah...Sunnyside. Again nothing exotic breed wise. Some nice person here, a few days back posted a list of hatcheries in WI and I kept meaning to write it all down but forgot!

Hi, thanks for the great info. I am planning on using McMurray or at least thats the plan so far lol . I thought about using TSC near here but the prices are higher.

What breeds are you planning on? And where do you plan on keeping the brooder when you get the chicks? If inside for the first month or so-you could probably start them as early as beginning of April I would think...but there are many experienced breeders on this forum that will give you great advice as soon as the Super Bowl excitement is over LOL

Thank you for the welcome, very cute. So far I have my eye on a Heavy Breed mix, it comes with 25 chicks for $52. I was wanting to use McMurray Hatchery in Iowa unless I can find a better deal somewhere with the low shipping like they offer. I have a couple brooders ready to use, the first for when they first get here and a larger one for as they grow to big for the first. I plan to keep them in my kitchen until they are ready to go out to the coop and yard.

Hi all--back from our "party" with DH's work. It was OK--I had great bowling scores...I think a 62, a 111 and a 93! Bet you all want me on your team next season hey?
wee.gif
God I hate bowling! I did sell a few dozen eggs though! LOL! Welcome to our little corner Apyl--pull up a chair and chat a while! I need to go to bed too CC...and FT--those are some adorable piglets!
Jim--are you planning on getting into the LGD business now? I think dogs are a little harder to do than chickens etc! At l east that's what my BFF tells me!
OK-off to bed for me--bowling must really take it out of a person! Nighties! Terri O

Thanks for the Welcome. So far I can see that this site is going to be addicting lol. Hey you'r bowling scores are better than mine lol. I went bowling a couple months ago with my daughters 4-H group and I got a 48 for one of my scores, pathetic I know, but it was fun.

Good Morning Everyone!

Apyl your now my new closest chicken neighbor. Prepare to be inundated with all kinds of helpful info. A lot of great people here! Have to go back and check my E mail preffs I'm not getting them and have to go into the deleted folder to open up.
somad.gif
WOW Cind wish that feed was closer that's a sreamin deal! I'll can put that stove on a pallet if that will help you. Getting it on a truck is easy getting it off might be a problem on your end. Going to bring the new one in the house and see what all I'll need to hook it up and get that stuff before I swap them out. Might be the end of the week before I'm ready. Want to just swap them so I don't have to fire up the back up furnace. The trucking Co is supposed to call with a delivery date/time today but I have an appointment at the bank for a mortgage refinance at 10. Don't want a call saying their here while I'm there.
roll.png
What are the odds? They picked it up Fri in northern Mn. so it could come today. Don't think those bee's will make it Bl4 they have antifreeze in their systems but their exposed to the elements. That sucks! TO you suck but only at bowling.
hugs.gif
MLH is that all fur pulled from momma?
ep.gif
Can't member anymore, sorry! Gotta go make room on the back porch. Oh ya I remembered I had wax worms in my ice fishin bucket. Cheeks was the first to take them out of my fingers. Can't look in the brooder without her running right over and begging.

Morning All..
Well Kristi P is now an enabler of chicken math!! She got two hens, I got 3, and picked up 2 for TO. A local Madcity chicken person who sells some VERY nice birds, all hatched au natural.
they are all in QT at my place!!
Well I am running late, trying to get part orders in for customers, and the work email system sucks and doesn't want to work!!

Hugs to all, Welcome Apyl!!
Carol

Apyl, hows that pronounced? apple? :D
2nd,
in your kitchen?
sickbyc.gif
I would rethink that. theres gonna be ALOT of dust, and I mean ALOT of dust, it will be everywhere! if you must have them in the house, a basement room would be better. one that you can close the door, just to keep the dust in there. with 25 birds in there?,
IDK how big your kitchen is, but the brooders gotta be a pretty big box.

just saying. good luck to u!

hows everyone else? I'm tired. and sad to, I just read the news feed from fox11 on my FB.

how sad!
anywho, talk later

Good morning...that was a really sad story to start the day out with RAIM! THose poor grandparents losing their daughter and now the children! I wonder if they will ever solve the case?
Just noticed that your are from Necedah Apyl...my dd20 and I go up to the Castle Rock Trails for a yearly camping trip during Mothers' Day weekend. There used to be the most fantastic little diner in town where the waitress would remember from year to year that my friend and I always wanted a big bowl of grits with our breakfast! It was a family run place...gone for maybe 5 years already. We were very sad when it closed! There was a family that was in there often when we were and every year they seemed t have a new

baby along! I think they were up to 8 kids or so...(I hope that wasnt you!~
hide.gif
) LOL!

DrH-you are sounding pretty excited about your new heating system! I hope it generates so much heat that it is summer around your house all year! (wouldnt that be fantastic?)
I just had to go and turn off the main water supply AGAIN! The pipes going to the tub keep popping off while DD25 is showering! Now the bottoms of my jammies are all wet! I guess I wont be getting a shower this morning...I dont want to risk them coming off while I am in there! Dh said it did it when he was in last week...ya think he would have fixed it properly? I just dont get it...

So when we got home I found that I had caught a possum--wait, I think I said that...today I will take it and drop it off on the way to my client's place. It should be happy there...no chickens though...I am torn if they actually could kill a chicken or not. I have heard both. I dont know if it is what got the babies or not...I am going to continue to set the trap though-I dont care fort hem rummaging through my hay!

I'd better get a move on...oh yeah--I had just heard about the weather being bad for bees! We were watching some "Amazing Human" show and there was a guy that was a bee keeper. He invented a pheromone that told the bees he WAS a bee and the all covered his entire body! It was pretty weird looking...anyway, he gave lots of information about bees during the show and one of his comments was about how they can get trapped away from the hive if they weather turns cold during the day. That is very sad about them...especially after they made it through the winter! I wonder if they were wild or from a beekeeper's hive?

Have a great day everyone! Terri O

(PS) sorry about your pr Cind! Those young hawks can really so a number on our chickens cant they?

good morning, and welcome apyl.. and don't do it. 25 chicks in your kitchen is a bit much for that long. maybe a week,, two weeks tops.. remember they will be growing, and doing it fast.. in the first week, they will be at least four times their original size..

You cannot imagine how much dust and dander they produce..

what kind of outdoors shelter do you have?

You can start chickens any time.. as long as you have a warm, dry place for them..

what breeds are you getting? are you going to be butchering them? are you going to be breeding them for hatching eggs? If you are going to be breeding them, do you have separate cages to separate the breeds?

It might not make any difference to you right now if you have mixed breeds, but a few years down the road you WiLL change your mind, Then it will be a real chore to straighten out your breeds..

just saying,,,,,,,,,,,,

Bees.. yes, bees will take flight when their nest/hive warms up to about 50F.. I had that happen to a hive one January when the temp was about 20F, but the sun beat on the hive and warmed it up.. the bees took off and froze in mid flight just 12 feet from the hive... there was a distinct circle of thousands of bees, dead in the snow, all the way around the hive.

by now, most people that know me a little have noticed that if there ever was a mistake to be made, I have made it..
