Hopefully some of the hens will turn out to be broodies, DrH! Then you can let mama do all the work & worrying. Yeah right!

So when did your eggs start hatching?

DH has his nose up to the bator every day, asking me if it's ok or if it needs water, etc. Then he tells me we shouldn't hatch any more for a little while after this batch because, get this, it's "too stressful"! What?!?!?!? I have yet to tell him we have an April Fool's hatch coming up. And here I wanted to do both......... Hmmmmm.............. Hey TO........

DrH, I am still not getting the notifications when someone posts on byc either.. I was at first, and then it stopped.. No matter, I just hit favorites and check in anyhow..

.........jiminwisc.........

Me too! What's up with that?

Sorry to hear about missing the peahen, Jim.That is definitely aggravating. My cats don't even bother my chicks either.

good evening, although I am a bit peeved.. I spoke to the woman this morning about getting the peahen tomorrow. I couldn't go today because SHE was busy.. I just called to set a time and she informed me that it is SOLD.. Sh!T/d@mn !! I am disappointed, can you tell? Oh well, I still have 2 hens.. I went through the same type of stuff trying to get my royal palm flock set up. Now I have 6 good hens.. 3 of which are laying eggs already this season.. I put together a quick nest spot for them.. It will have to do until I get a decent one set up..

I sold a guy some nice barred rock roosters a couple of years ago.. I hope he has some extra ones that I can buy back.. I have that one that I just bought, but he is slightly built..

Bu t he will have to do the job if I can't find a nicer one.. that other dud I bought looks like a barred wheaton Americauna.. anybody want a $2 rooster ? I paid $10 for him,, he will find the soup kettle otherwise.. He is a crowing fool for sure..

to train your setter to get along with the chickens, you have to get them together at close quarters, not keep them separated,,.. it takes time.. but it is well worth it.. If you have an aversion to a rolled up newspaper, then you will have to do it by voice commands.. and always on a leash.. It boils down to , how badly do you want to break him?? I could not tolerate living with the threat that if the dog got loose , it would kill my birds.. My cats, (the few I had) were all tolerant of chicks..

The same thing happened when I was trying to find my first spotted draft horse. The guy was having a tooth problem and I couldn't come that day so we scheduled it for two days later on a Saturday. I called on Friday to confirm the directions etc and the wife said that the husband was outside at that moment showing the horse !!! And they were sealing the deal. The buyer said she was just driving by on their way camping so stopped. She said the horse was for her husband who had lost a horse just like it etc ......... She said her name was Mary, I said is it Mary so and so !! Sure enough they got the horse for $1000 and within a few months she had that horse up for sale for $3500. She was a horse broker. She makes it almost impossible for anyone in the SW part of WI or even further from getting a nice draft cross horse at a price a family can afford because she buys them all !!! Boy was I ****** off !!! Still bugs me to this day.

Wish i had an extra rooster for ya Jim.
hugs.gif

Spent the afternoon outside just watching the chickens, ducks, goats and horses !!! Can't wait til spring.
I have to admit last night I was tending to the chickens and I had this thought that i should really downsize !! Even wondered if i should give them up all completely !! Then after watching them today, how the heck could I do that ??? LOL I looked at all of my Americauna Roosters today, how can you choose who lives and who dies ???? Time for a CL ad I guess !!

As far as letting a dog free range and guarding your chickens, well, I've seen my neighbors dog after it was hit by a neighbors car. I don't ever want to see that happen. Our Great Pyrenees stuck around like glue until the neighbors dog (yellow lab) kept coming to visit. They would play and then the lab would go home. Then it got to the point where they would go play in the swamp. He was a very bad influence on our boy.
I totally agree that a dog can be trained to stick around but if I'm not out there I'll never trust mine to stay home. There is just way to much interest up here with the woods. And living up here near the Kentucks, a loose dog could be a dead dog.
Our male Great Pyreneese lets the chickens come and eat out of his bowl. Our female Great Pyrenees loves the goats. She has to much energy, the chickens stay clear from her.
our Chocolate lab, well she is the most hyper dog I have ever had and I would never ever have another lab. No offense to lab owners but I don't like their energy level. OM brought her home for a hunting dog. She hasn't gone once, either has he !!
smack.gif
But what could I say after I keep bringing things home. Don't get me wrong, I love her and she is a beautiful dog but i like the attitude and calmness of the Great Pyrenees.
bf4m if you are thinging about a Livestock guardian dog do allot of reading. They do have different mindsets and are big dogs. If you have small children they can knock them over just walking by !! LOL The sadest part is they don't live as long as other types because of their size. From what I've heard 9 years. My boy over 5 yrs now. He is considered a senior !!

Ok, time to sign off. For now anyway.

one more note about dogs. generally females tend to stay home better than the boys do..

I have to do some investigating.. this room is still 81 F a day after I turned the last bator off.
can a computer and a large screen TV put out that much heat?

since I cannot go pick up that peahen tomorrow, I will go to the feed mill and get some ground corn and oats. for the outside birds.. they don't need layer mash just yet..
1200 pounds for $102.oo..

Especially if they aren't fixed like the yellow lab that would come over. Since they FINALLY got him neutered he has not come over as much. He even came over limping with his cast on. They live about a mile away !!!

Jim, you might want to think twice about breeding your girl. The litter that my male came from had 16 pups. And they aren't that easy to get rid of sometimes !!! They were asking $400. I called and asked if she would take less when they were older and she had any left !! She said you can have one right now, $200. He was 5 weeks old. They had been to the vet that day and were dewormed and the vet said they could go to their new homes (normally I wouldn't take one at that age but well, he was adorable) Anyway, when I got him home he started circling so I brought picked him up to bring him outside. I waited and waited and nothing, no poop !!! Came back inside and Holy Cow looked down on the floor and there was a pile of spagetti I mean round worms !!! YUK !!! He obviously pooped while i was carrying him out !! lol
I felt so sorry for the woman we got him from !!! She had them penned off in her kitchen right next to her kitchen table !!! Can you imagine having 15 pups pooping out spagetti !!! YUK !!!
We drove to SW WI to get the female Great Pyrenees, only paid $50 for her !!! They are wonderful dogs !!
It would be good that you have the pups used to chickens from baby on. We had the dogs long before we had chickens so it is amazing how Rex took to the chickens. He even lets them inside of his dog house. River the female likes to play with the goats. They haven't had to much contact with the pig yet !!! As fast as Porky can run don't know if they could catch him.
I love my Porky, he gets real excited now when he see's us.
Little Piggys still don't have names. They are getting calmer everyday. They know where their food comes from !!
Candled my paint eggs (3) that the black hen was sitting on and they are going bad. I think she is moving around to much. That's ok, I have my hands full with all of the others.

Come on CC whatcha waiting for. Candle those eggs !!! inquiring minds want to know !!

Hi All!

DrH... Those are the cutest, ugly roosters I ever saw... except mine of course!

MLH... Love BTB and his killing socks! Well, glad to know your safe from those evil socks!

Jim... sorry you didn't get any goosies yet.

TATTERS... Your Back! Check in more often!

As far as dogs go I was surprised how well Rudy is doing. Yes. he likes to run at them and make them fly. LOL And he did get the tail of that one. But for a lab I think he's doing well. He runs along the fence and "marks" like we trained him. He also marks near the coop. If he wants to chase too much I just yell "Leave it" and he's fine. The hardest part about training the dog (for me) is training DH! I've caught him sneaking food to the dogs and letting them clean his plate.

I made some good rib eye steaks for DH's birthday supper. With mushrooms, h,m. onion rings, baked potatoes and mixed veggies! I ate way too much! Actually, I wound up grazing on it for about 3 hours!

How the guys could gobble up all that in one sitting is beyond me! Then there was the cake!

Guess that's it... night all!

She's already caused problems about a year ago-busted out of her crate and wiped out a test batch. We were gone to work and the kids came home from school to the mess. She is the one with medical problems and as DH puts it you can hear the wind whistling through the ears. She can't be unsupervised at any time as she will shred stuff-lately she has been taking the kid's toys and destroying them even though she has dog toys right there. We knew about this behavior when we adopted her but never had a problem with it. This is all come out now that our other dog is gone-he was alpha here and there was no problems. So voice commands mean nothing to her, she attempts to take her crate apart on a regular basis mostly in the middle to early morning hours with lots of barking which pretty much goofs up our sleep. Had her to the vet, ran tests they came back fine, she's putting on weight, she on 2 types of pain medicines and seems relatively happy. Until she is no longer with us, she gets no where near the chickens. Now if she takes apart the crate she stays in at night and when we are work-then I have problems.....

Good Morning All! Except for the windy part. Looks nasty outside. Jim that's exactly what happened to me. Everything was fine then poof no more E mails. Just a pain in the patuty to have to go through several steps to get where you want to be. H&R you are to be commended for your patience with that setter, I couldn't do it. Cind I hate when people talk about suppers made. Because then that's what I want.

Was coming to my senses a little this morning thinking they will make the sheet metal today so the earliest I can put the new stove in is tomorrow. And if their not done until Sat. it will be Sun. As you know I'm just an excitable boy. CC that's where I want to be, having a hen do the hatching but I think I already know it won't be much better than running the bator.
roll.png
Already thinking that I'll keep some of the roo's for breeding cool looking chickens. Depends on how Peatwo gets along with them. Might have to build a roo pen. Guess I'm making an extra trip to Rapids was going to wait until I picked up the sheet metal to buy thermostat wire but like I said I'm just an excitable boy.
