good evening, although I am a bit peeved.. I spoke to the woman this morning about getting the peahen tomorrow. I couldn't go today because SHE was busy.. I just called to set a time and she informed me that it is SOLD.. Sh!T/d@mn !! I am disappointed, can you tell? Oh well, I still have 2 hens.. I went through the same type of stuff trying to get my royal palm flock set up. Now I have 6 good hens.. 3 of which are laying eggs already this season.. I put together a quick nest spot for them.. It will have to do until I get a decent one set up..
I sold a guy some nice barred rock roosters a couple of years ago.. I hope he has some extra ones that I can buy back.. I have that one that I just bought, but he is slightly built..
Bu t he will have to do the job if I can't find a nicer one.. that other dud I bought looks like a barred wheaton Americauna.. anybody want a $2 rooster ? I paid $10 for him,, he will find the soup kettle otherwise.. He is a crowing fool for sure..
to train your setter to get along with the chickens, you have to get them together at close quarters, not keep them separated,,.. it takes time.. but it is well worth it.. If you have an aversion to a rolled up newspaper, then you will have to do it by voice commands.. and always on a leash.. It boils down to , how badly do you want to break him?? I could not tolerate living with the threat that if the dog got loose , it would kill my birds.. My cats, (the few I had) were all tolerant of chicks..
DrH, I am still not getting the notifications when someone posts on byc either.. I was at first, and then it stopped.. No matter, I just hit favorites and check in anyhow..

The same thing happened when I was trying to find my first spotted draft horse. The guy was having a tooth problem and I couldn't come that day so we scheduled it for two days later on a Saturday. I called on Friday to confirm the directions etc and the wife said that the husband was outside at that moment showing the horse !!! And they were sealing the deal. The buyer said she was just driving by on their way camping so stopped. She said the horse was for her husband who had lost a horse just like it etc ......... She said her name was Mary, I said is it Mary so and so !! Sure enough they got the horse for $1000 and within a few months she had that horse up for sale for $3500. She was a horse broker. She makes it almost impossible for anyone in the SW part of WI or even further from getting a nice draft cross horse at a price a family can afford because she buys them all !!! Boy was I ****** off !!! Still bugs me to this day.
Wish i had an extra rooster for ya Jim.
Spent the afternoon outside just watching the chickens, ducks, goats and horses !!! Can't wait til spring.
I have to admit last night I was tending to the chickens and I had this thought that i should really downsize !! Even wondered if i should give them up all completely !! Then after watching them today, how the heck could I do that ??? LOL I looked at all of my Americauna Roosters today, how can you choose who lives and who dies ???? Time for a CL ad I guess !!
As far as letting a dog free range and guarding your chickens, well, I've seen my neighbors dog after it was hit by a neighbors car. I don't ever want to see that happen. Our Great Pyrenees stuck around like glue until the neighbors dog (yellow lab) kept coming to visit. They would play and then the lab would go home. Then it got to the point where they would go play in the swamp. He was a very bad influence on our boy.
I totally agree that a dog can be trained to stick around but if I'm not out there I'll never trust mine to stay home. There is just way to much interest up here with the woods. And living up here near the Kentucks, a loose dog could be a dead dog.
Our male Great Pyreneese lets the chickens come and eat out of his bowl. Our female Great Pyrenees loves the goats. She has to much energy, the chickens stay clear from her.
our Chocolate lab, well she is the most hyper dog I have ever had and I would never ever have another lab. No offense to lab owners but I don't like their energy level. OM brought her home for a hunting dog. She hasn't gone once, either has he !!
But what could I say after I keep bringing things home. Don't get me wrong, I love her and she is a beautiful dog but i like the attitude and calmness of the Great Pyrenees.
bf4m if you are thinging about a Livestock guardian dog do allot of reading. They do have different mindsets and are big dogs. If you have small children they can knock them over just walking by !! LOL The sadest part is they don't live as long as other types because of their size. From what I've heard 9 years. My boy over 5 yrs now. He is considered a senior !!
Ok, time to sign off. For now anyway.
