Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

SSSOOOOO funny! I have the big chicks outside in the backyard. They are thoroughly enjoying it! Rocket is taking her first dust bath right now. Funny though, because it's moist dirt, and also a place where farm cats like to sh!t. Aaaahhhh well, I guess your first dust bath is ecstasy no matter the cat crap and mud!

Hi bantiesrule how was the swap?

It was great! Had alot of fun. Didn't find anything myself but my sister got her black swans, some chuckers and 3 maran chicks.

ETA:
My sister thought there was a chicken swap by Chippewa Falls in the spring? Put on by 4H? Anyone know of this swap?

I am glad you had fun banties rule. Sounds like your sister scored BIG. :) I think we talked a couple years ago on BYC for a while. Remember that?

BF4me Just a warning to keep those chickens away from cat feces. They can get toxoplasmosis same as pregnant mothers. When I was new and took my chickies out they all took a dust bathe at the same time and I thought they were going into some kind of seizure. Whew! At least you knew what they were doing. LOL

I like that chicken tractor MXM. I know it is just prototype. I think the idea of the wire bottom is excellent. It will need some good paint to weatherize it. I bet in the winter you could just put a regular old light bulb in there and that would be enough heat. I think the straw isn't necesarry but in the winter is nice and cozy as long as it doesn't touch the light bulb. I could see some nice straw in the run for winter with plexiglass sides. NICE! Don't forget to vent.

Well that's my opinion anyway and now I have to go watch the finalle of the Bachelor then I am boycotting the show from now on.

Oh one more thingy. I gave up on my eggs and just went in there to peak in the window and found two newly hatched cochins. :) I feel better now.

Buddy hasn't been fertilling the eggs. He is really laid back. Maybe it will be Lucky's turn in a couple of days if Buddy doesn't do anything. (no bullseyes that I can tell)

Oh mxm They don't need straw in the summer. I don't know if you thought of this but when I made an enclosed area (first one)it wasn't tall enough for me to stand up in. That was not a pleasant experience. Just an idea. :)

Hello! I'm new :) I live about 20 minutes north of Green Bay and just got my very first 6 chicks today! 2 'red pullets' and 4 straight run buff orpingtons. I really wanted buff orpingtons but since I'm after females I decided I'd only chance it with 4 of them and go for 2 that were definitely hens! I'll probably be back at Tractor Supply before the end of the week for more ;) they said they got the pullets and orps in this morning but that they were expecting more. How old is too old to introduce new chicks? Would the first two weeks be okay? I really wanted to get 2 silkies since my daughters fell in love with those but they didn't have any so now I'm on a mission to try and find some (they want black if anyone knows of any chicks in this area, or even fertile eggs would be great).
I'll have to get some pictures of the pullets up to get some guesses on breeds, they both look different from each other for sure. I told my husband I was just going to get 6 hens...he'll be surprised when he gets home tonight.
Do you all keep your brooder in your house? Right now our 'guinea pig cage brooder' is in our dining room so the kids could watch the chicks today (and they've spent most of the day right next to it!) but I was thinking of moving it to the basement or garage, would the heat lamp keep them warm enough?

Hi Welcome to BYC. I'm new to chickens this year also. I used an olde rabbit/guibea pig cage as my brooder also :). Mine is in my living room right now, it started out in the kitchen but there was a draft. Oh and I also have Black Silkies lol looks like we have some things in common. I bought my silkies from Ideal, they are now 2 weeks old.

I'm new to BYC. Hello! I'm near LaCrosse, WI. We currently have 12 adults, 13 "teenagers", and 27 month olds. Most are mutt sexed pullets. We do have 1 Americauna that lays green eggs. Love her!

Just wanted to say hi!

I took my oldest DD out today to TSC to get her a pair of ducklings since she has decided to wait on the goats and wanted ducks instead. I figured if we were going to do more ducks we better do it now before the age gap is to much. The TSC worked said both ducklings were Mallards but one is black. One for sure looks like a Mallard duckling but one looks like a Cayuga Duckling. What do you guys think?

She names this one Scurry

And this one is named Chip.

Thanks Tiki! Prolly best to assume that the newbie doesn't know anything! Thanks for your input!

Welcome DomesticDiva and Earthy Lady!
