Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Exhausted is all I can say. I got most of the deck done. :) Just need railings. So far the entire deck cost $0 , just like the shed and chicken coop all materials came from the colapsed 20x40 shed. Here is a pic. Oh and no making fun of the steps I was having issues and they are two skinny, I need to dismantle another wall in order to get to the thick wood to make the steps better. So for now I just made a quick set. Can you picture me building this freakin thing by my self while watching chicks out for the first time in their run and my 3 and 5 year old getting in my way. Oh and trying to keep an eye in the cat to make sure he didnt go near the chicks. Yeah I'm exhausted.

The chicks LOVED being outside. I actually locked them in the coop with their heat lamp tonight. The last time I checked on them they were just casually laying around. The Ducks really loved outside. I don't have a pool for them yet but I did put some water in a sled the kids had.

Here is the deck.

Thanks. I gotta be lol DH sure isn't.

Good evening all! Man am I bushed...got TONS done outside today! Redid the door I picked up in the trash to fit in my third coop section. Cut the opening and then hinged it on....then moved all the roosters into it from the barn. I left the hens in that pen since they are laying so well along with the buckeye on eggs and added 3 more that I want to get "pure" for eggs for the next foolish hatch!

I left my tiny Blue Ameraucana banty in there with the hens...I think his chest swelled 6 sizes! He was up on the roost tonight (where he never went with the big guys in there) and I was telling him how beautiful he is...you should have seen him strut! I bet he thinks he died and went to heaven for sure. The roos were fine in their new pen but in the other pen I pulled 3 hens and added 4 roos to the 3 that were in there--what a fighting mess! There is a cuckoo Ameraucana in there that was just going at it with another one...thought I would have to pull him out but he setlled down when I put in some bigger, older roos. Now my laying hens have only Australorp and Aussie/MaransX in there with them...oh yeah, and Abe the Salmon Fav. Now if I hatch any eggs I will have the extra size in the mixed chicks. Bigger hens lay bigger eggs!

Thanks for all the support for my Mom--I believe she came home today...the funeral for my Uncle is on Monday in Pulaski (just East of Green Bay) Dh is going to Green Bay on Tuesday for work so I guess I am going by myself. I kind of want to ride with my parents or my Aunt...but I kind of want to go myself because then I can visit with some of my peeps and bring some chickens home!

Like I need any more hey?

I thought that I was going to ride horses with WiChCh today but she didnt answer any of my phone calls or texts...I hope you are alright?
Jim you sound like my friend Judi...first thing she said today was that it was TOO HOT to be outside! I believe you about the AC NJ...I bet some of my town friends had theirs on today. I guess in order to be comfortable some folks need to be at 72 degrees year round.

Good job on the deck Apyl--I hope you arent planning a deck party for too many?

That is just about big enough for a chair to sit on and read in the sun! There wont be room for a table so yu better put a railing all around to set your drink on! The kids look like they are having fun playing in the dirt too...that was a favorite activity here...they would sit under the big pine tree and play in the roots with matchbox cars (or pinecones!)

Cind...were you in the shower all day? Musta felt really good!
My inside chicks are really noisy tonight--it is the modern games that are cheeping like crazy! Eli doesnt say a word...he is so big! I will get a pic tomorrow. He looks like a giant next to the games.

Well--off to lock up...I still have much to do today yet...and it's getting late! Sweet dreams everyone! Terri O

So I have a dilemma. What's the best way to introduce chickens to each other? Our adults are going to be freezer meat soon and in their place we have some 2 month chickens and some 1 month old chickens raised separately. We have a new coop being built that is supposed to be ready early next week that we want to put them together in.

We already know better than to introduce any of the smaller birds to the adults. They promptly get pecked and chased after so we've kept them apart. However, the 2 month olds and the 1 month olds HAVE to get along and so far have never met each other. What's the best way to go about putting them together? Any tips or tricks?

Thanks!

You can put them in the same area, but have a fence to separate them so they can see each other. Make certain it is sturdy & secure, or it will get ugly. When you do finally introduce them, they should be around the same size so noone has more of an advantage, and do it while they are free ranging, or if they have to be in a run, put things in there for chickens to be able to hide in or escape to. And I'd have the hose handly, just in case someone gets a little out of hand. One quick shot oughtta do it.
