How do you all keep your cats away from your chicks? Our cat is a mouser and she just stares at the chicks in the brooder, I caughter her trying to stick her paw (all claws intact) into it yesterday. I'm not too worried about when they are bigger because she really doesn't like other animals but she doesn't attack bigger animals either (at least she's never brought home a rabbit or anything of that size). She is really a pretty ornary cat, she hates other cats and dogs, though she'll tolerate dogs as long as they stay away from her. Anyways, that's why I put the chicks where she can't get them when I'm not around, if I'm around they are up with the cat and us. Maybe it'd be different if I didn't have the open sides of the guinea pig cage. I'm going to probably pick up a big rubbermaid bin today, I'm not sure the cage will be big enough to keep them in for 4 weeks? The bin would probably protect them from the cat better too.
Does anyone else buy from the Shawano Tractor Supply? When I was there Monday it seemed like they got in new chicks more than once a week and not on set days. They said they were expecting some more, tempted to call today and see. I also found someone on craigslist that has 5 day old silkies. My girls really want silkies but I wonder if it'd be a bad idea to have silkies in with bigger birds, I'd only get 2 max...and then of course I'd have to break it to my husband that we'll be having 8 chickens rather than 6 because I definitely want 6 layers
Plus I want to get a few more from Tractor Supply (in case some of my straight runs are boys) but you can't buy less than 6, so I'll be brooding 14 chicks...
Another beginner question, you'll all probably laugh. How do you open the metal chick feeders? I cannot figure it out, I've been spooning the feed into the little holes
