Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi, y'all --
Been very busy with the new puppy, enjoying the beautiful weather, cleaning a few flower beds where early bulbs are coming, trimmed the grapevines and will spray dormant oil on my fruit trees tomorrow, ya know - SPRING STUFF - how fun! It feels so good to get outside. I've got a couple of trays of plants started and need to get on the stick to get more going....

I've only skimmed some of the past messages as time gets away from me but tiki244, I did go back to find your post(s) about your landlord and nasty neighbor. Man would I be ticked. I'd be doing a couple of different things: posting No trespassing signs, adding a padlock to the basement door (give the landlord a key), I'd be calling the Sheriff to report the neighbor coming out of the basement with copper pipes - not to file a complaint necessarily but perhaps they could patrol your area more frequently and at the very least make them aware of the situation. I'd be setting mouse traps in the garden just to startle the thieves and perhaps seriously consider spraying hot pepper spray on my veggies to protect them from the thieves. (I think the stuff washes off.) I'd also be putting up No trespassing signs IN the garden and would make smaller signs telling the thieves if they're going to take produce they should leave you $ for them, and alternate other cautionary signs like, "Don't eat - manure tea just sprayed", etc. I know, I know... probably not likely to do any of these things but I certainly would be thinking about it. I also like the idea of putting up a fake video cam with a notice premises are being videotaped. Ya might spook them that way. In all actuality, it sounds like a really bad situation and if you have the chance to move, I'd certainly recommend it. People like that don't just change and they sound just AWFUL. I'm really sorry you have to put up with their nonsense! Hugs and good thoughts being sent your way! (Beautiful birds by the way!)

Well that's all I've got - too tired to write anymore.

Stay well & enjoy the sun & the warmth while we got 'em!
Elaine

Evening everybody! Between the gorgeousness of today and Sunday, I got tons of chicken chores done woohoo! Hauled 17 wheelbarrow loads of litter to the gardens, then today barrowed about 8 loads of wood chips back in. That sure helps with the mud. But I am spent. And will be going running with Julie in a bit.

Can't wait to see what the extra fertilizer does for the garden this year. Just got a catalog from Four Seasons nursery out of IL; never heard of them but they have some great prices on nut and fruit trees. Also need to put in an order for heirloom apple trees at Maple Valley Orchard in Gillett; they have hundreds of old variety apples and other fruits.

Dan, will Bill have any pure Langshan eggs, or will everything be projects?

Jim, PM'ed you about the mink cage caravan.

Julie just called, gotta get runnin'!!

Amy- I think Joan got that catalog and she said nothing ever grows from that nursery, she is really INTO gardening, I will post pics of her gardens from last year and new ones from this year. The handy man just turned an old railing from a deck into a new trellis for her.

H&R-
We found Joan a cocker, and she loves her. We had one that we got from a rescue down near Milwaukee, and we LOVED him.. we may get another one in a few years.

I have to get my seeds started for my garden, and I think I am going to take chicken stuff and get it tilled into the space that will be my garden!!

Back to the catalog, I saw on the cover a pecan tree. My first thought was, how old would a person have to be in order to get any pecans from that tree... LOL

Thanks all for support and condolences. I appreciate that there are so many of you across the great state of WI.

Well the school hatch will start popping out over the weekend and next week we should have a ton of new chicks to find homes for. The roos are either splash maran, welsummer or polish. The hens are a mix of heritage birds that are just awesome to look at anything from blue cochin to buckeye to brown leghorns. While I do like the way some chickens look I am really looking forward to what will come out and how "ugly" these birds will look.

Pictures will come!

Thanks,
KEN

FT, I do the same exact thing. Never fails, whenever I have to get up early to be somewhere, I always find 1001 things that have to be done the night before.

Give the kids the green & blue eggs. I'll take the lavs.

OMG, I think I'll take the sump pump prob as opposed to your water issue. I so do not miss having a water bill.
I hope your thumb is better. Sassy piggy!

DrH, I hear you. My adults just love that chick feed too.

Tiki, thanks for the positive thoughts. It worked! DH ran to Menards last night AFTER I called to be sure the pump we wanted was in stock. No dice. A**hole kid had no idea what DH was talking about. Then he went to the other Menards in Waukesha & they didn't have the one we wanted either, so he got another one. This AM, he went to our (much closer but more $$$$) Home Depot to get a backup & some other parts. He worked on it all morning, but he got it done & working, with a backup sump with a new battery backup & most of the bells and whistles. And very minimum *+$#!@&*!!!! Can you say WHOO-HOO!!!!!!!!! And since he got it done in record time and had the rest of the day off, he had some extra time to de-winterize one of the bikes & take it for a quick spin to ease any frustration.

What a great winter for Deb to decide to move up here, hey? Where the heck is that girl, anyway?????????????

Yikes, Carol! DH & I bought one of those resin sheds, and he assembled it on the ground & had it done in less than 2 hours. It is still together & leakproof a couple years later. I'm hoping it was the base/foundation that was the issue. What brand did you have to wrestle with? I also have a resin greenhouse that isn't in quite as ideal shape as the coop (settled), but I'm sure the foundation is the cause there. I agree with Jim, a concrete foundation would be the way to go.

Amy, 4 Seasons is a part of a huge distribution gardening agency. They were all bought by a single company a few years ago. Gurney's in IL is one of them. I've ordered some stuff from them, but not much has survived. I do still like Gurney's, but I'd rather mail order from Jung. They are here in WI and their stock is much hardier, and larger. JMHO.

H&R, so glad your mom is feeling better! That is wonderful news.

Good luck with the spaniel. I hope that works out for you all.

Well I hope everyone got to enjoy the beautiful weather we had today. The birds were singing & the squirrels were busy raiding my bird feeders.

My girls were loving being out and about in the sunshine. I was out feeding & checking on the older chicks when DH came to join us. I sure wish I would have had my camera. He sat down on one of the straw bales & put some corn/BOSS in his hand to show to the older girls. My PR, Priscilla, came right up and started picking all the sunflower out of his hand. It was so cute. Then when she'd drop some, he'd scratch through the straw on the ground while she watched intently, snatching them up as soon as she saw them. Then he got the shovel & she really went bonkers. Prissy knows the shovel can only mean one thing: time to dig for worms! And he says I spoil them.............

Well, better call it an evening. Sweet dreams, all!

Thanks for the warnings (you too CC). I just looked them up on DavesGarden, and they have about a 70% negative rating!! Just tossed the catalog. Maybe it will make a good firestarter......

Very glad to hear the man got it fixed! Sorry to hear I won't be able to float you around for fun...

Evening all,

Just got settled in for the night with my good old faithful puter. Loonnnn Loonnng Day.

Made it to Eagle River half hour early. Sat at McDonalds waiting for the friend of the woman I bought the lavender Orp eggs from. I thought what looked like her vehicle as was described at 1pm but she just drove straight through the parking lot. That was at 1pm. I was suppose to meet her at 1:15pm My cel phone was dead so I got online and emailed the seller and told her I was there in case her friend didn't remember what my car looked. Like.
At about 1:40pm she shows up !!! She had left me a message that she was running late but of course with my phone dead, I didn't get the message. She must have gotten to town early to begin with and went through the parking lot. So much for attentive driving !!!!

I ended up going to Pamida to look for a car cel phone charger. No dice. Then to Family Dollar, Bingo, $7. Then found a thrift store that I have seen in the past but they were never open when I was in town.
Everything in the store was 50% off excluding jewelry. I got $23 of stuff for $11.50. I got a George Forman for $2 that included a big George Forman Cook Book. I got a nice heavy duty sauce pan for $.50. Some towels for the piggys bed for about a buck a piece. And a real nice electric fry pan for $2. Oh and a bunch of stuffed animals for the dogs and pigs for $.12 each.

Then drove home then to Antigo to the horse workshop and to deliver the eggs. I did decide I was only going to give them green and blue eggs and 2 white polish cross eggs just for fun.
I brought 31 eggs total. If they all hatch I'll have EE Roos to bring to the bash !!! LOL
Can't believe I'm saying this but I hope they don't all hatch !!!
hide.gif

Was disappointed at the workshop. Last year they had sub type sandwiches, this year just cheese and crackers, Veggies and dip. DH was starving and was looking forward to sandwiches !!!

So after the workshop we went out to eat. He said people cleared out sooner then last year too. He said they wanted to get out of there and get to the resturants before they closed ! LOL

The vet I use for my horses was there and talked about Vaccinations and deworming. He actually says that if you deworm 3 times a year with Ivermectin with the fall deworming including Pyrazequantel (sp) it should be enough. That's the cheapest of all of the dewormers, good to hear.
Learned something new about Tetanus. It loves to hang out in Horse Manure !!! He said if you get wounded and go to the ER or Doc and you tell them you have horses, they will recommend a Tetanus shot even if you are not due for a booster just because it is to prevalent in the horses environment.

So, now that I CRS to reply to, I'm going to call it a night !!!

Keep your fingers crossed for my all you Lavender Cheese Head Girls or what were we calling our club? I have 7 lavender eggs that I'm putting in the bator Thursday with the lavender split eggs I'm getting in the mail hopefully in the morning.

Night all !!

Hi All!

Well, the broody gave up last night. Oh well, a later hatch would work better for me anyway.

DH had the septic tank pumper guy here in the A.M. and he pumped the tank and did an inspection. Said it looks like part of the leach field may have collapsed. In any case water was running into the tank.
barnie.gif
Then DS#3 comes over and says something about "Is it moving through the other tank?"
hu.gif
We knew we had 2 tanks... but didn't know where the access was.... son found it... next to the deck....right under where we put the hose winder.
hide.gif
Thought that was just a slab so when you ran water from the faucet you wouldn't get a muddy hole!
idunno.gif
Sooo..... called the tank cleaner guy back and now everything is running OK... it IS a screwy system...it's like the house, kept getting added onto and not always by pros! We will have to get things checked out better though. But 1 tank is 1000 gal. the other is over 300gal so we should be good for awhile if we don't get too much draining into the 2nd tank. Cost over $500 so far! Going to open all the windows tomorrow and air the stink out of here!

FT... What were you doing with your fingers in her mouth?
roll.png

CC... Glad you got your water issues cleaned up too.... well, now you got to clean up the mess it made.
hmm.png

tiki... if the problem looked like it was going to last too much longer I was going to go into "camper mode".

Tomski... hope you feel better soon!

H&R... glad your mom is better! Hope the dog works out.

The girls were loving outside again today.... so did the pen of roos!!! DH didn't hook the gate tight and all but 2 got out! One of the boys took 5 hens way over through the abandon house lot and at the edge of the "other" neighbors.... they have dogs! Good thing they weren't out! I am starting to think twice about putting one of them to the ax... he's looking prettier and prettier! Black with that green sheen and some very nice gold. He's an Australorp/Gold Comet cross but is looking great!

Well, got a few things to do then get to bed ... lots of catching up to do.

Night All!
