Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I was outside and thought man it's nice maybe I should push my junk pile back out back before taking the snow bucket off. Was OK until I got into the BFF's food plot. Plenty thawed there thought I was gonna have to leave the tractor out there. Ya right. So came back and pushed some brush back and felt better.

Afternoon All!

THIS IS A CHEESE HEAD PUBLIC PEEP ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

DH wanted me to let y'all know that there are two (yes 2!!) seminars coming up that we will be doing for this week/weekend!! So if you or anyone you know might be interested in starting to raise chickens, or have just started, this is a perfect opportunity to gather information and to ask questions!!! These are also great seminars for those people who had chickens "way back in the day" and are looking to rekindle their chicken ownership skills!
The seminars are given by my DH who is the Game Bird Consultant/ Chicken Consultant for Nutrena Feed. He has raised chickens for over 40 years and will be happy to help you and answer any questions you have.
I go along for the fun, help to answer questions and I am also the Chick Wrangler.

The first seminar will be in Orfordville at Day's Feed on FRIDAY March 16th from 6-8 pm.
The address is:
14203 W Spring Valley Rd, Orfordville WI
608-879-3401

The second seminar will be in Oconomowoc (holy cow I spelled that right on the first go!!) at Friends of Nature on SATURDAY March 17th from 10am to 12pm
The address is:
W359 N5930 Brown St, Oconomowoc WI
262-567-2699

It amazes me when I read that your own dogs and cats go after your own chickens.. keeping them separated doesn't help.. you have to take the time to get them acquainted and teach them to leave them alone.. It will save a lot of stress in the future..

Thank you for saying that! I completely agree. How in the world did people ever manage to keep chickens and dogs before we had poultry fencing and so on? Just like you teach your kids to behave, you teach your animals to behave. If you would not tolerate 'bad' behavior from your child, you should not tolerate it from an animal that has the potential to kill you.

Just my 2 cents.

Kristi-
I wish you had told me that you were wanting to get a Resin one...
PLS PLS PLS.. look at ALL of the online resources for those, and issues putting them together... I am sure you may remember my diatribe and the funny blog post I had a link up for, for my friend who helped me, it was titled "Shed wrestling".
The BIGGEST issue these sheds tend to have is that they MUST be put together on completely even ground, if there is any settling after or during the "putting" together aspect.. IT will NOT go together correctly.
AND please ensure you have extra ways to secure the roof as you will see when you do put it together that the screws are not nearly long enough, nor is the plastic/resin wall (that is hollow) strong enough to do much good in the fierce winds we have.
Also when the nice people take it apart for you (you said on FB Chat) that they would, you will have to re-use the holes they have already put into the walls.
Trust me on this, do the research, and perhaps buy longer and thicker screws when putting it back together!! And ensure the ground is even!! And set aside several hours, learn new curse words and a rubber mallet is your friend!!

Gorgeous Day Here Today...hope yours was the best too!

Welcome to DD and EL...good folks here with alot of help...I heard that there is a couple old guys here though....hope that doesn't matter.

That sucks about the plumbing Cind....it usually happens this time of year when the ground is saturated for sure.....hope it's a simple fix for you.

Have the brinsea together and testing....looking good so far.

The last 7 days I've collected over 7 doz eggs....pretty hens!

The eyes are old Doc...better than none...I feel Blessed to be able to see...Thanks for asking.

Keep them fed well and singing.... bigz

Evening everybody! Between the gorgeousness of today and Sunday, I got tons of chicken chores done woohoo! Hauled 17 wheelbarrow loads of litter to the gardens, then today barrowed about 8 loads of wood chips back in. That sure helps with the mud. But I am spent. And will be going running with Julie in a bit.

Can't wait to see what the extra fertilizer does for the garden this year. Just got a catalog from Four Seasons nursery out of IL; never heard of them but they have some great prices on nut and fruit trees. Also need to put in an order for heirloom apple trees at Maple Valley Orchard in Gillett; they have hundreds of old variety apples and other fruits.

Dan, will Bill have any pure Langshan eggs, or will everything be projects?

Jim, PM'ed you about the mink cage caravan.

Julie just called, gotta get runnin'!!

Hi folks,

long day outdoors and it actually feels good to be "outdoor" tired

Amy, neither Bill or I have a Langshan roo at this point, I am still looking for one,,,,maybe IF I get my act together Niellsville might be the answer, I have found sources so I just need to chase them down. When I mentioned this to Bill he said "good I can get some stock back" lol I'll keep you in mind when it happens. When I get my chicks we'll discuss the possiblities more, very knowledgeable fellow on the heritage birds,,been at it for awhile me thinks

probably great advise on that plastic "coop" never pushed a rubber mallet much but in the trades a BFH is always good, having spent many years around sawdust I vote for wood,,,,think "green" it's renewable!

after departing those words of wisdom,,,time to find the pillows

tc folks

Evening all, sure was a nice day today!

Got a lot done on Sunday- cleaned out the growing pens in the garage and moved some birds around. Culled out some cockerals that weren't good breed represntations- had enough for 2 meals

! Saved one cockeral back and gave him the job of baby sitting 20 -5 week old chicks- he is getting better with them, hasn't hurt any but didn't want to share his food dish- tonight he was letting them eat out of his dish(had 3 dishes in the pen so he couldn't guard all 3). This allowed us to clean up the dog crate that was being used for them. Increased the pen size on the older group of chicks- gave them a 12' X 6' area to hang out in. They love it!

Went and picked up the 5 bbw turkey babies- they are doing good.

to everyone who is new, always fun to hear from new peeps!

Great news- my mom is back home and starting to feel much better- she sounds more like herself

Well we have a new house guest for the next few days and if it works she will become a permenant resident with us. Our friends are part of a rescue and they are letting us see how a 5 year old cocker spainel gets along with us and Ellie(our Aussie). She is smaller than Ellie(she weights 35-40 lbs) and we have been told she is a "guys" dog which will work great as she will be the one my DS(10) will partner with for 4-H dog training. So we'll see how it all goes.

Off to get the kids ready for bed- have a great evening!

good eve, all, I collected only 7 eggs today.. but the good news, 4 were from the breeding pens..
so they are holding steady, and I expect they will increase a lot by the end of this week..

I didn't do anything constructive or to brag about today..

tomorrow I am planning on dragging my trailer out of the snow bank and checking the lights..

I cannot agree that a plastic shed will last longer than a wooden stick built shed.. my coop is about 40 years old, and sided with used wooden siding.. I did go over the wood siding with some vinyl siding a couple of years ago.. but it is far far from falling down... the sun is the hardest thing on vinyl.. it will get brittle after a few years..

If I ever build another coop, it will be on a concrete slab, with at least two tiers of concrete block walls,, the whole outside will be bermed to the top of the concrete so that when I go in with the tractor bucket to clean it out, I will not bump the concrete blocks out..
