good morning, I couldn't get online last night.. I have "wireless" service, and sometimes it requires me to unplug it and let it rest for a minute.. I was not in the mood to mess around with it last night, so I watched TV and went to sleep instead..

It looks like it will be warm enough to start planting potatoes this afternoon.. looks like rain for the rest of the week.. this year I am going to plow a trench and fill it with compost and then set the potatoes in.. we did a few like that last year and they were head and shoulder taller than the rest.

I like to apply the compost directly to the row.. no sense spreading it between the rows for the weeds' benefit.

I made a trenching attachment for my tiller just for this operation.. I would like to make a one row hiller for my Farmal A .. I have an idea of how it should be, but I have to figure out how to do it without any welding..

a few years ago I had a chance to buy a set of cultivators for the Farmal A.. but they were way in Mich. as afterthought, I should have made the trip..

I accidently had my hatcher go dry just as a turkey was hatching.. it had a tough time of it and ended up dying.. once in awhile the tube from the water bucket gets an air bubble in it and the water quits flowing.. sh!t happens..

today is call duck day.. I don't see any pips yet.. there are 8 eggs working.. 1 of them was iffie.. Mel, all of the small eggs were clears.. we sort of expected that..
Often, the guinea eggs do the same thing.. small = clear..

UnkDan, I did not call that number.. I have no guineas, yet.. when I do, I will, though..

Morning all!

Not much to report here...everyone is doing great!

Tossed the quail eggs yesterday and just waiting for the Iceie eggs to hatch....I have to look at the calendar to see what date they are supposed to hatch...I need to candle yet...
After this batch hatch I'm done for the year...or at least until Dh comes home with something to hatch! LOL!!

After much discussion and a hard decision, DH and I have decided to let Buzzy loose. She will be living on private property and not be hunted. She has been absolutely miserable the last few months and just stands in the corner. She is healthy but not happy. I have tried again to see if she can live in the coop but the hens just won't leave her be. So, Buzzy will be get to run around with other pheasants for the remainder of her time here on earth or until winter at least. But I think she will be much happier being free even if it's for a short amount of time...

Well, on that some what bitter sweet note, I hear a certain rooster trying to crow....good gravy he sounds terrible!
Anyway, I'd best be off. Chores to do and all!

Hello again! It must be the day for hatchers to go dry Jim...when I got this mornings offerings out of my bator there were two that were totally stuck up! One couldnt even get his eyes open and another the feet were stuck in the shell and the body shrink wrapped! I got them loosened and wrapped up in wet paper towel...now the humidity is 99% in there...we will see what happens. I have 20 in the chick TV--DH only says, "good grief!"
Many many of Ron's babies are hatching...he is the new black australorp. I thought this was the batch that I LABELED the eggs...not all of them apparently...there are still more pips in there. THe next batch are Aussies and blue ams...nothing else! I should be able to tell them apart...I hope!

Good that you are letting Buzzy free MLH! If she is truly miserable that is for the best I think. Will she be on your property so myabe you will get to see baby Buzzies sometime? That would be cool!

Does anyone here have dairy cow(s)? I am looking for a local source of milk. I'd prefer to support family-farming in my community where possible.

I am also interested in various meat sources as well.

I know that farmers' markets are usually a good source for this but I'd prefer recommendations.

Hello! Hope you all get to enjoy this beautiful day. Not much to report here, just been lurking. Glad to see everyone's new peeps -- super cute!

I am wondering if anyone who is going to the bash will be in Madison BEFORE the bash? I think there were a few people interested in some of my Anise Hyssop plants. I'd be happy to dig some up for the bash if I can find someone to deliver them? If you're coming to Madison and wouldn't mind stopping by on the Eastside that would be terrific. (I'd be happy to meet you somewhere in Madison, too, if the Eastside is too far out of the way.) Just give me a heads up as to approximate day/time so I can have the plants dug in time.

If you want a Anise Hyssop plant from me, please send me a PM as it's easier for me to track that way. I don't read all messages everyday and I don't want to miss a request....

I know it is important to keep a balanced diet,in other words a bagged feed, but how many of you use table scraps as well as regular feed and not just for treats?

We only give scraps as a treat. Celery, carrot peels, yogurt, stuff like that. Otherwise they free range for bugs and get feed.

Ok, here is what we found today! 2 pullet eggs, one of which was shell-less.

This makes me wonder if we have some starting to lay too! We have 6 Hardy Concorde's that will be 15 weeks on Wednesday and we've gotten a couple of small eggs but I just thought they'd be even smaller, sort of like a bird egg?

I would LOVE to have a Gurnsey Cow! I know lots of people prefer Jersey or Holsteins because they produce more milk, but the Gurnsey's produce creamier milk and it's great for making butter, ice cream, etc. Right now I travel a half hour each way once a week to pick up milk from a lady that has 1 cow that she hand milks. I'm hopeful in the next year or so we'll have one of our own. but I'm no where near you. If you can find people that are in 4H or have similar interests, ask around! It won't be publically advertised. That's for sure!

Terri O: I soooooo understand about the GF and eating out. Its hard when its a child and you try and order without the bun. Every now and then someone will be like "You can just take the bun off" Grr Its like_I really didnt want to have to explain it but she has Celiac and will really react if the bun even touches her burger or whatever. Often you get the look like I have a spoiled child if you dont explian. So even though DD12 dislikes it-I explain EVERY time I order something that she has Celiac and is very allergic to gluten. Its not easy hanging out with friends either and always trying to figure out what she can possibly eat when out and about.

ChickenScratch: During the winter I have a small water trough that I fill with fresh dirt and ashes from the fireplace -the girls love the dirtbath. My run also has pretty compacted dirt (Used to be our mini horse pasture)...but they seem to find areas to dig up. My momma with her two babies yesterday-Let her out while I babysat the babies-she RAN out and tooka quick bath LOL Reminded me of a new human mom relishing the few mins away from the baby to sneak in a bath/shower!!! AS long as I was holding the chicks-momma was running around catching up on chicken stuff....when I went to put them back in her brooder area-she nicely followed me in and happily warmed them up again!!!

Advice: We are getting ready for our DDs grad party here in 5 weeks and need to whip the yard into shape. SO needs to put own weedkiller for thedandelions. The stuff he uses is "pasture safe: and he used to use it around the mini horses. My chickens are not on this area but when I let them out at night to free range-they are. How long do you need to keep them off this before its ok again? Or is pasture safe ok for poultry as well?Makes me nervous!!
