Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

MXM- I hope your hen recovers quickly!!! I worry about this happening with ours. Our dog, luckily, is now chained far enough away from the coop, but the other day my youngest child hooked up the dog (the wrong way) to the chain (unhooking the leash from the fence). The dog ran out of the backyard by digging under the fence and a 25 ft leash in tow. My first thought was OH NO..THE CHICKENS! They were fine, no evidence the dog had been there at all and the kids caught the dog once she ran out of the backyard.

jvls yeah that is with my dog that had puppies too. Looked like one of those old Egyptian hyroglyphics. I weaned them early then. Too hard on the mama esp. with big breeds and a big brood. I actually bottle fed each one once a day. They didnt like it too much at first. Then started dryed milk and water soaked in puppy chow. mxm I hope your hen turns around soon. *hugs* It was pretty wild over here when you called last night with the roo jumping on my back and all. sorry

I .... Got... A... Camper... Today!!!! I'm gonna get one of those electrical spots at the campground. Bigz says there's plenty!
Well that is exciting! Was it from one of the links I sent you, or did you find one closer to you?

Glad Squirrel continues to improve, Bl4!

Unk, I would be greatly interested in buying some paste tomato plants too, please, if you can get any extras.

Ken, I hope you get to enjoy some of that sunshine today. Cloudy & overcast down here.

mxm, do you have any vitamins & electrolytes you could put in her water?

DrH, Oxhearts are great paste tomatoes too. Even larger fruit than the Amish paste.

cs, so glad your dog left the chickens alone! That could have gone bad fast.

Well, better get my keester moving. Have a great day, all! Where is Terri?

hmmm lost my previous post.....

mxm: That deal with your hen is crazy! Keep us posted how shes doing? GL

bbp: Dont think I ever responded to your offer to help with painting the barn...would love the help.....just not sure when I will get to it. Painting my living room and dinging room (FINALLY no more white!!!) dark red apple, light honey, lemongrass, butter rum and cinnabark! LOL Love paint names...Anyhow next weekend is the bash-then we have our 3 day memorial day weekend to get everything else done for the grad party.....so not sure I will get it done before then :-(

Have 3 eggs that are chirping and have the firstlil break mark (under mommas)-how soon after they start peeping before they actually hatch?

Well the DH will attempt to add onto the coop this weekend (pray that it doesn't rain)! When we built the coop & run we didn't add windows or the nest box to the coop area as it was really cold still and the chicks weren't roosting yet. But as it is getting warmer, the chicks are roosting, and close to laying, we need to get them in.

Who recommends the hatch to the nest box to be on the top and who recommends it on the side?

Also, what a the negatives/benefits of tilt out windows versus one that come completely off?

I'd be interested in paste tomatoes, flavor tomatoes, green peppers and any other started food plants for the garden! Still haven't bought any plants yet so I have my whole garden budget yet!

Well, better get moving and get something done!

I came home from work today to find a hawk in my yard eating one of my chickens! Its probably the same bird that was here last year. I'm going to have to keep all the bantams and call ducks locked up.
I brought home a brown red OEGB today from work. It wasn't looking good and they asked me to take it so if it died it wouldn't be sitting there till Monday. I sure hope its a hen.

Well it's official... This hatch is over. I candled this morning. No movement. I knew it! So I crack them open I had one more duck pip internally but not externally. Same thing with a chick. All the rest quit close to, or during lockdown. P!sses me right off! I just don't understand what I'm doing wrong. They grow really well up until lockdown. Then they die! I do dry incubation. Then I bring the humidity up to 75-85% for lock down, and they die.

So now I have to break the news to Mazo and Twizzle. They were going to take my extras. :(

I decided to pick up a few other duckling to keep mine company. They are mutt ducks, Cayuga and Buff. Totally not as cute as my baby. But at least he's not a lonely duck anymore.

Then I felt bad for the only chick and brought her home some friends. Three Ameraucaunas (they are just EEs I'm sure.) but right now they have fluffy faces so I'm hopeful they'll keep them.

You know, im good with chicken addition, but also chicken subtraction. Libby got put down today.

Later gators!
