Happy Mother's Day !!!

Not only to the Chickie Mamas but also to those who have "hatched" the featherless, leg hugging, curtain climbing, opposing thumb type humanoids....

I went down to look at my chicks today and I found new development on my silkie:

She's got some kind of mohawk that is darker than the rest of her xD I thought it was the cutest thing. My EE that I thought was a roo is looking more like a hen. It's fluffed out, and it's getting a beard. I'll have to post pics later. I keep trying to convince myself to get more chicks, but I don't think janesville's farm & fleet is still ordering chicks, and I don't like paying $5 each when I could get them for $1. I really wish I had an incubator

MLH: We had a garage sale yesterday. Didn't sell a thing. But we live in the middle of nowhere lol.

Morning all!!

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!!! Huge hugs to all the mom's (and Dad's who are moms! too) and I hope y'all have a terrific day!!

I was hoping for breakfast in bed, but nope! The dogs would not figure out how to work the stove and Gracie really does not get the concept of sharing.....just like here mom! LOL!!

Got the bunnies ans chichers all take care of and now I'm going to tinker in the garden and soon to be flower bed. While we were at garage sales yesterday, nice lady was having a plant sale and I got two hostas called Sun and Substance I believe. They were $3 for a gallon pot so I thought why not! DH bought a sweet potato vine plant there as well.

Well, I best be off, things to do and all!
Later!

good happy mothers' day to those of you who qualify..

too early in the for me to have anything to report..

I sold another rooster yesterday.. now I am down to just one jungle fowl roo.. He is not the best of the lot, but I accomplished my goal to whittle down the rooster population..

TerriO, is it normal for a setting cockatiel who is feeding babies to keep laying eggs ? ours is..

Earl/Pearl had not tried out her new nest box.. she is due to lay an egg today, so we will wait and see.. the new boy has not made any two minute drills yet.. with our luck he is prolly a she, too..

Tomski, do you still want quail? I have some that are fully feathered out and about half grown.. Let me know before the bash, I have to sort them out of the 90 chicks they are in with.. I think there are 5 of them..

Had a hawk buzz the yard yesterday.. didn't go unnoticed by the guineas.. I think by having the dog patrolling keeps the hawk from coming down..

Happy mothers day to all the mamas!!

DS4 made me a painting and some flowers, and DS1 made me a handprint with a poem. Cuuute!! DH made me breakfast in bed, and we go out to dinner later.

But nooooow, I get to go clean my house! Lol

I have one hen with 2 chicks that are 3 weeks out-in a seperate area. This morning I have 3 chicks from 2 different hens. I know when I try to reintroduce mom with the older chicks-they are getting picked on-including mom. SO I am trying to leave the other 2 hens with the new babies out in main coop. Also, when the coop is open during the day, they have access to the run. THe wire fencing I have around run-chicks can run in and out (mom cant get to them) and we have a barn cat Im worried about.

I would love to hear others experiences:
-do you seperate or leave hens/chicks in main coop
-if you seperate-at what age do you re introduce and is there any special way to do this?
-do you think I need to put chicken wire around the base of run?
-are roos ever means to chicks?
-any other advice or personal stories would be great!!

Hi all!
Taking a water break from tinkering outside....DH tilled my soon to be flower bed. As I was cleaning it up I thought this might not have been the best idea but I have to say that the freshly churned dirt makes it easier to get the harder to pull out weed roots.
I'm toying with maybe making the whole area into one huge flower bed. Take out the creeping charlie/grass. Have to ask DH if he'd be willing to till the whole thing. The nice benefit would be no lawn to mow in front of the bed...and I would not need to make a neat little brick or whatever boarder. Although a boarder might be pretty....Hmmmm.

I know I'll take pics and see what you guys think...

Well, break time is over and it's time for lunch!!!

Later!

Happy Mothers Day!

Eldest son made me a card and a flower pot at school - the pot has butterflies made with his fingerprints, precious. Later today DH is going to help me put together my hatcher. It needs to be operational by Tues at the latest.

Had a not-so-nice Mothers Day Eve; went out to lock the birds up at 11 and the 2 broodies housed together had offed some chicks!

Picked up 3 dead ones, and the last one's beak moved, so I went and held it under the heatlamp in the brooder. It resurrected and today seems fine; the only Wellie survivor. One Wellie I never did find. All momma bird rights have been rescinded, all the chicks are now in the brooder. Angie, I would be cautious about letting everybody run together. Just sayin'.

There is a pair of CA geese on the pond today with 6 goslings.
