Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hoping I made the best decision-but moved two new moms and their babies and nestboxes into seperate broody pen. And took mom and her 2-three week olds out and let them loose with the regular population. I feel like a traitor-but ran out of options......so far so good. Going to be a nervous wreck tmrw while at work...but made many places that only the chicks can get to to hide if needed.

Is anyone interested in a TRIO: Lavender cockerel, a lavender pullet, and a split pullet?

Lavender what? orps?, AM's.....if so I may..... what do you want for them? PM me if you like

Can Preen be used in the garden around the vegetables? Yes it can, I have used it in the past for this application.

Happy Moms day to everyone hope y'all had a wonderful day, I got my pressy early Friday when the DIL picked up my little burglar..Devin, I got a VERY pretty card and 2 Butterfly stakes for the flower bed. also got a call today from the boy.

Now I have a question for you long time chicken keepers..... Is it possible to get mites from new bedding???
I have had the worst time getting rid of these things, just when I think they are gone then there back again after about 3 weeks, which however coincides with the application of new bedding, I also I have a gimpy GLW rooster, who spent the winter in my basement alone no contact with birds of any kind....they pick on him terribly...... and tonight I was picking out his coop and the dam things were crawling all over me???????????? how can that be? also my hospital kennel with my hurt Hen is full of them including the blanket I used to cover the cage at night !!!!!!!!!!!! if not from the bedding how in the world did they get back in with a hen who has been in the house in the hospital cage for a week or more, and in my roos cage? who has had no contact with anyone but me, in over a year. . Now I will have to retreat everyone again, and throw out all the bags of brand new bedding I just laid down 3 or 4 days ago............ I will even have to treat the babies who are just 7 weeks tomorrow because I just changed out all the bedding in there coop too? can I treat them are they too young? will seven hurt them? argggggggggg I'm so upset with this crap, I haven't seen a m ite on anyone in 3 weeks, now I have them again................GGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Why on earth would you be doing that ?

Just thinking about it. I'm trying to think of how many Roos I want to have around here, what kind of hatching eggs I want to sell, etc. I can't / won't keep around a million roosters. I suppose I could always cull the Lav Roo if I needed to. Just putting my feelers out there....

Happy Mother's Day all! I hope you all had a wonderful day.

H&R, if you plant veggies from seeds in your garden, I wouln't use Preen if I were you. DH put some in mine one year, then tilled the garden the following year which spread it around, and I had very little come up for a few years in a row. Each year it got a little better, but boy, was I ticked!

I had to plant everything in pots/flats & transplant them into the garden. It worked for some stuff, but I had no root veggies for a while.

If you just plant plants in your garden, then it would be fine, IMHO. But the tiller will spread the stuff around.

Glad to finally hear from you again, Tom!

Jim, I've had quite a few hawks buzzing my yard lately. I found a bunch of rabbit fur out in the front yard too, and quite a few patches of feathers in different places, one right in front of the house. Must have gotten a songbird that was at one of my feeders.

But for the most part, we've been seeing a lot of crows chasing them off. I will (try) to never bad mouth an annoying crow again.

I hope you don't have any issues with yours.

Ang, how about an isanti red twig dogwood bush? As far as mom & chicks go, I'm sure you will get many different opinions, none of which are wrong. Each individual situation will most likely be different from the next, so what may work for one may not be ideal for the next. When Alice went broody, it was on New Year's Eve, not exactly good chick-raising weather. Plus her nest box was almost 4 feet off the ground, and the other hens kep ousting, or trying to oust her from the nest. So I decided to have mine separated from the rest of the flock, otherwise I thought it would be just too much stress on mom trying to keep her babies safe from the other adults. I brought mine inside, only because we were getting some really cold weather, and mom stayed with them until I think they were almost 4 weeks? Then mom went back out with the flock. A couple weeks later, I put the kids out with the flock, but separated by a fence. My adults on one side, the kids, Jack (my banty roo) and the rabbit on the other. After a few weeks of that, I started to let them out to range with the flock for a few hours. Every day it was a little longer until we finally integrated them. There was a lot of squabbling & plenty of chicken drama, but every day it was a little less until they figured out the pecking order. But that was just my sitch.

HTH And congrats on the hatches!

MLH, I agree: get rid of the grass & make it bigger! Grass in front of the flower bed grows into the flower bed.

Amy, so sorry about the Wellies.

Bl4, thank you so much for the heads up on the pineapple in your cake. Please point it out to me at the bash so I can keep my distance.

Bf4, you're getting rid of your lavs? How old are they? I'm still not sure about my bunch yet. Still no crowing. But if I don't have any, (yeah, wishful thinking, I know

) I'd be interested in them. Please.

That's right, Bigz!

Well, it sounds like most of you got to enjoy the day. It sure was a beauty! I hope next weekend is just as beautiful.

DHs DM & SD came over for a few hours. We ate and watched the chickies, then DH & I watched a movie after they left. All in all, a great day in Wisconsin.

Hope everyone had a great mothers day! I tried to convince DH that I deserved the day off because I had babies last night. But he just laughed at me. No one said they had to be human. Right?

I got the planter/brooder finished today..put hinges on the cover to make it easier to open rather than lifting the cover on and off.. I took a few pictures as I went along.. just before dark I took the tractor and brought the cement mixer out to the front of the garage.. tomorrow I plan on mixing some compost and dirt to put into the planter..

I see a bunch of chicks in the bater.. I have a tv warming up for them..

sometime this week anybody that I am supposed to bring something to the bash for, better remind me.. quail for Tomski, delawares for somebody, and ????

OK to bed early tonight..

....jiminwisc............

Made Pineapple Upside Down Cake for my mom today (the recipe from The Cake Bible TO). Pop it out of the cast iron pan and drizzle with rum..... YUMMY!

Squirrel seems to be slowly getting back to 'normal' he has meowed at us today for food. Tomorrow it is another cat trip back to the Vet for a glucose and liver panel. IMHO I think his insulin needs to go up just a tad so he eats more.

Picked up some plants for my 'garden' and for my window boxes today. I was planning on getting everything planted but time slipped away from me. I guess I will get it finished tomorrow.

MXM, you will have to do your nails up for the bash!

Jim, Yep they will start another clutch of eggs while still feeding babies. Like TO asked, are you going to pull those babies and handfeed them ? It's time consuming but makes alot better pet and increases their selling price. I remember those days, hand feeding the baby cockatiels I raised. Then I had quaker parrots babies. I would mix small amounts of baby food (guess my motherly instinct) into their hand feeding formula. One of them was banana food While I fed it to them I would sing the Chaqita (I know that is not at all how to spell it) banana song, over and over. Well it turned out to be the babies favorite thing to do........ sing the chaqita banana song....... then laugh at the end !!! That was so dang cute. Now I want another Quaker parrot !!!
Only thing cuiter is baby parakeets. I didn't hand feed them howver. Cutier then cute !!!

btw Jim, watcha all got that you can bring to the bash ?????
hu.gif
And what night are you spending? Inquiring minds want to know plus it is only fair of you to warn everyone since you are a heavy snor'r !!!

For the life of me can't remember what else I was going to say other than. Bl4..... Glad Kitty's appitite is improving... good sign !!

I woulnd't put young chicks in with adults at that young of an age. I lost several silkies to their own parents that were housed separately. Remember their are chickens just like humans. The good, The Bad and The Ugly !!! You will never know until you try but I wouldn't risk it if you like what you hatched. Time will tell but it may be to late if you come to realize the adults couldn't be trusted. Plus they say you are not suppose to mix different age groups for health reasons. Adults birds have been exposed to many different bacterias, virus's etc and can be carriers for several serious virus's. Mareks being one of them.
Also mareks disease has no cure. You have to vaccinate the chicks before they have ever been exposed to the virus and keep them from adult contact for at least 10-14 days. Adult birds (that have been vaccinated for Mareks) that don't show any sign of Mareks can still be carriers of the disease. All the vaccine does it prevent the chickens from developing the tumors. they still get the disease.
Ok, I know this may not be making any sense. I'm falling sleep here ................ zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...........zzzzzzzzzz..................zzzzzzzzzzzzzz !!! LOL

I have no idea how or why I started in on this topic but either way........ I'm off to bed.

Night Everyone !!!
