Brent, if you do use newspaper.. make sure you do not create a vapor barrier.. If you have a leaf shredder , try grinding them up..

I watered all the plants with less than 50 gallons of water today.. that is much better than the 100 or so that it took before I mulched.. of course it started to rain almost as soon as I started watering.. but it was not much rain.. I let the water run and I sat under the tractor bucket to keep dry..

Ugh! I jsut realized something....since my 3 wk and 6 wk old chicks are now out with the "big girls" they are eating the layer feed....which has too much calcium for them right? And I just bought three 50 lb bags of layer feed......does this mean I need to stop using this-feed regular feed and put out more oyster shell for the next 3 months?????

Jim put "Livestock Guardians" or something like that in the title. I was selling a golden pup once and after getting flagged 10 times I changed the title to "hunting buddy" and it stayed up til she sold.

Got a call from TO today...she wanted to ride and wanted to know if I could go!!!

So I said "Sure!!!" So I got to ride for the first time since 2005. Probably longer if I think about the length of ride we went on today! LOL!!
Needless to say, I have a new boyfriend....Mr. Brody...TO's Rocky Mountain Horse. He is cuuuuute and loves carrots. He was an angel, packing me around and not complaining to much. THANK YOU TERRI!!!! YOU ROCK!!!!!

Ang-Take the chicks off the layer. You are correct-it has to much calcium in it. You can feed the The Big Girls the chick feed just put out the oyster shell ideally where the chicks can't get to it. The most critical time is the first 3 weeks for chicks not to get layer feed. To much calcium can shut their kidneys down. Ideally the first four months is how long chicks should get chick feed. HTH

Not knocking Wallace & Gromit- we have 3 of 4 of their movies- we just get a good laugh out of Shaun the sheep-DS(7) has a stuffed animal sheep that looks alot like Shaun! Always can watch them!

5 hatched so far, one DOA the first to pip and got almost out then dead (not stuck),,,4 more pipping as I type so for shipped eggs that's 50% already and it will be day 21 tomorrow (yeah I checked it 3 times,,,lol)

another 1st for this newbie, standing in front of the "Jim cage" tonight I heard and watched 1 roo and 3 pullets snoring! I mean if these came from Jim I guess I would understand,,,,,,

A few showers rolled through, not enough to settle the dust, humidity is here along with the pollen it's a true joy to have AC in the house, I'm sure I'll be taking more breaks than usual the next few days

I plan to separate the cull roosters in the 15 week old group, thinking these will not be free ranging any more, suggestions as to what I should feed them for the next few weeks b4 butchering? I should weigh a couple, guessing I'd say they are around 5 lbs

Bigz if ya wanna bait that wolf, years ago I heard a "basket of goodies" or "3 little pigs" (sry FT) works good

good early eve.. I sold 15 keets.. another person is supposed to come Sunday and another on Monday..

I still have the extra Tom.. the guy who wanted one found one already..

Annie ran an ad for the puppies with the weekly shopper.. It will appear in 7 areas in the state..
she talked to Brian today.. he took one of the females and has her with some lambs.. He said that she barks at him when he gets near the lambs.. 7 weeks old, how cute that must be..

the older chicks emptied out their feeder onto the ground.. good, then they can just clean it up.. I did not give them any feed today.. and there is still a lot on the ground.. the rats will appreciate that..

The new brooder is working very good,.. I think I have it set too warm, though.. tomorrow I will put a thermometer in there and see what it says..

I am surprised at how well it holds the heat in.. It is flat topped.. so I am thinking of fencing the top so that the chicks do not go on top of it. and I do mean "go"..

My HS children have had their friends over to watch Shaun the Sheep, and my oldest DD made Shaun in Art class. We love it! The kids will sing the theme song at random intervals....

Now I am going to get on my soapbox about Wolves...... ahem...

BigZ, I bet that wolf is long gone. Probably looking for new territory and it sounds like it was a young one since it was not too nervous of you. The odds of you or a child being attacked by a wild wolf is extreme, you are more likely to be bitten by your own dog. I know they opened up Wolf hunting in the state, but seriously? Are we all going to be gunning for ANY wolf you see no matter what it is doing???? They have the right to exist just like the coyote's, hawks, eagles, foxes, etc. A nuisance wolf is one thing but to just start shooting any critter because of the POSSIBILITY of it taking out your livestock or the REMOTE chance it attacks you is just silly.

If you encounter a Wolf.

• Stay calm.
• Back away slowly while facing the animal.
• Leave the wolf a way to escape.
• Pick up small children without bending down.
• Raise your voice and speak firmly.
• If the wolf approaches or acts aggressively, wave your arms and make yourself look larger. Shout, make noise and throw any available objects.
• In the unlikely event that you are attacked by a wolf, fight back. Try to remain standing and use rocks, sticks, tools, camping gear and your hands to fend off the attack. Keep the animal away from your neck and head.

If anyone DOES see a wolf, the DNR would like to know about it.

One of my chicks drowned in one of the duck pools I also found a meat bird neck deep in one of the pools a couple of days ago. He had been there for a while and was cold and couldn't stand up. With a little care he pulled through. Looks like my ducks won't have deep pools for a while.
