amberflea she is adorable and so is the hat!!!

angiebubs the rose comb is dominant but if you have two rose comb birds that are Rs X Rs you can get 1/4 single combs out of these. An RR bred to a single will get no single combs. But an Rs to a single will get a percentage of single combs. And the RR and Rs all 'look' rosecomb. ( the letters here are just place holders as I do not know the correct letters for this gene, but was just reading about this comb breeding in BYP mag)

Could it be your hen may have vent gleet? In that case antibiotics would be counterproductive. I am by far an expert but the longer I keep chickens the less inclined I am to give them antibiotics. I do keep corid and/or sulfadimethoxine available for chicks in case they comeup with cocci. And I also keep probiotics handy for a Boost at a time of stress. ACV with the 'mother' and garlic also. Oregano and many other herbs have antimicrobial and antibiotic and antifungal properties to help chickens to stay healthy. I have used powdered bluestone for vent gleet which I ran into just recently for the first time.

We know the Roo is for sure a Lavendar Orpington -so Roo has the single comb. What we are unsure of is: there was one Hamburg mix (can't remember the other half-I will find out) out with the LO hens. The Hamburg hen mix has a rose comb....so your saying if the mom came from 2 breeds that were both rose combs and was with the LO Roo....the baby would have to have a rose comb? So since this chick has a single comb-it would have to have been from a LO hen then right? Which meannsssss Drun roll MOTTLED LO!!! lol Are Mottled Lav Orps rare? Whatever the mix is-darling baby and I will post pics asap.

Love to see the baby. Sounds darling. Your mixed hen~ if your hen has an Rs comb would look rosecomb but have one alelle for a single comb and bred to a single comb male may produce a single comb chick. However the possibility of being a pure Orpington is much greater from your statement.

BBP: You mom saw her (Notice the HER) last night and thought the color was pretty awesome as well!

Tiki: Thanks-read the info on Vent Gleet and this doesnt fit really either. Shes a big hen, nice and solid....no sores or missing feathers around vent etc. Still a mystery. Hoping when i get home shes fully recovered tonight!!! I am leaning now towards something she ate. BBPs mom checked (Shes had an egg bound hen) and said it didnt appear to be the issue.

Good Evening Chicken Buddies,

The roof of my house is torn off and getting ready for a fresh layer of shingles. The original cedar shakes were still on it from 1923. In addition to this there were 2 more layers on top of it. My house is breathing much easier now. The guys were all over my house at 7am and the kids were woken up awfully early. My DW was brushing her teeth and heard one of the guys talking about weed right outside the door... He got fired really quick once I found out. I don't know what you do at home, frankly I don't care what you do on your personal time, just don't bring it to my house or talk about it in front of my family.

The ladies are laying well pushing out 5-6 eggs a day. I have 16 peeps ready for sale and a couple of roos that may go to the butcher in a few weeks. No more losses this week so I think it was a fluke. Hopefully my other Blue Copper Maran Pullet will make it.

Just played softball for the first time in 12 years and it was good. I am a little sore from the sprints and swinging the bat 2 times, but I got on base twice and was fielder's choice out on the next swing. Maybe one of these days I will hit a homer again.

It is a good thing I am 33 and not 73...

Hope you have a good night,
KEN

I do believe I am finally recovered from pulling an all-nighter! Slept for 8 hours last night and feel like I could sleep 10 tonight!

Ran into the Valley today to have coffee with the Dean, and then did a little shopping and bought some retaining wall bricks for our fire pit before I headed over to the spa for my massage. On my way home the DH calls and tells me that the only place he could find a tire rim that would be decent sized for a fire pit is up near Black Creek. Since I was just leaving Appleton I told him I would head over there and pick one up. So now I have a very NICE looking fire pit! I was worried the baby ducklings would fall into the pit the way is was set up, so I was sort of pushing to get it fixed.

Tomorrow is my niece's 9th birthday, so we are heading over to my sister's house for cake and ice cream as soon as my DH returns with the youngest DS from taekwondo.

And back to the grind again tomorrow! I am looking forward to my weekend of the Dirty Girl! It will be so NICE to have 4 days off!!!!
