That's too bad. Nothing like getting yelled at by your mother. Pristine my A****. I hate that word when used with you should,,, and house cleaning.... And kids...... You are just fine the way you are.

I too have been gone a while so doubt I will be able to catch up. I will try and get the highlites.

Everyday I do a couple hour tour of the yard to get it in shape for what I think my landlady thinks is acceptable. She wants everything pristine too!!! Argh!! Really takes a bite out of my normal chores, especially when it is hot out.

The other night the storms were scary but nothing much happened here. I feel bad for the people that had sink holes and other such dammage.

Hey everyone. So I'm on here asking for help. I aquired 5 pullets of different breeds as my pets. I loved these ladies and would take them out to garden with me. They loved following me around and I spent hours out with them. One day I noticed one was missing. I searched all over but couldn't find her so I assumed, since she was the smallest one, that she got out some how. But the next two days led to the same thing, one chicken was taken. I panicked and began locking up my two remaining pullets at night and wrapped my entire pen in chicken wire. They were great for 4 days until a different predator was able to bust through this really small hole. I came out to find my last two birds mangled and spread all over the pen. To say the least I have been hunting down every predator on my property and 'taking care' of them but now I can't seem to find anyone with pullets around where I live or I would even like call ducklings. My ideal birds would be cochins or something fancy like that but I'm just hoping someone could help. I live in Delavan, WI so anyone in southern wisconsin that would have a couple birds please let me know. :(

Thanks,
Stephanie

Wow sorry for all who had trouble with the storms and the losses and everything. Sorry about the car BBP.

Morning all!

BBP: Sorry to hear about the car! Did DH make it home?

Babylady: Keep us posted on your duck situation! Crossing my fingers this is behin you!!!

What are reasons hens can lost weight/be skinny? Are worms the only possibility or could there be something else?
I think northern fowl mites and maybe lice can do it.

FT: Thanks for the response...I am pretty confident they are mite/lice free.....which is leading me to think worms :p I just hate theidea of a monthw ithout eggs!!! I think I will try to take a flock sample to the vet and have them check for worms. I feel like they have been eating less lately as well. They look/act healthy but the 3 younger chicks breast bone is sticking way out. And my hens seem tohave lost weight also. :p (I remember thinking chickens would be a fun EASY hobby! lol)

BL4 has loads of Call ducklings! She is in Weyauwega area.

Boy did I learn a lesson this morning! Hubby was busy installing sheets of aluminum around the bottom of the coop to make it more predator proof so the girls were out in the play yard. I got the bright idea this would be a good time to put the final coat of paint on the ramp to the pop hole. Ok, things were going well, the girls weren't paying too much attention to what I was doing (had the ramp on a long bench we have in the garden/play area) in fact they were stretched out sunning and napping when I decided to pop into the house for a second. I swear it was just for a second! When I came back out, well, my originally mostly black hens, are now, at least two of them anyway,
black brown and white!!!!!!!

I swear these hens are worse than a bunch of 2 year olds!

The worst is the one I named Crockpot. she has to be right in the middle of whatever I'm doing and if there's any mischief going on you can bet she's the one that thought it up and leading the way!

Oh well, at least they do make me laugh and I don't have to change their diapers

Yesterday they all decided to stick their heads through the herb garden fence and go after the collard greens again. Hubby saw them thru the window and told me. As soon as my feet hit the porch they all came literally RUNNING around the corner, right past me, slid to a stop and started pecking the grass! (Crockpot in the lead of course) This was before I could even say a word! Like, "we weren't doing anything mom, honest!"

All I could do was stand there stunned and shake my head and listen to my hubby in the kitchen cracking up!

Why do I think this bunch is going to be a real handful????

Just catching up here and deciding what to munch for lunch! LOL!!

Vicki-Those stories were hilarious! Chickens are innocent in all things....Right?!?!?!

Ang-FT is right about the lice and mites. Worms could be the issue but also it has been hot hot hot.....chickens don't eat much when it's hot. If they are laying but not eating a lot, then that might be the problem too. My PR Midge is super thin. No worms. She is not eating well but laying everyday though. The egg production "production" has to come from some where and if the hens are not eating well, they are pulling nutrients from their bodies. I've been using vitamins and electrolytes during these hot days to help Midge since she is depleting herself.

Apyl-I would be more worried if I went into a kid infested house and found it pristine....Kids=dirt. I hate when Mom's do that... use the "clean card". Next time tell her very sweetly: "Wow! Your so right Mom! Why don't you help out by cleaning the_____ (The item she is freaking out that is so dirty!) and hand her a sponge the walk away. Let her figure it out from there. If you do this every time she takes issue with your general dirt then either she will help out or stop saying it.

Welcome Cochinlover! Sorry to hear about your losses! I agree, Terri-O aka Terri or WCc aka Carol (whose forum name is Wisconsin something something that I am drawing a complete blank on!) might have what you are looking for. BL4 (babylady4) like Amy said has Calls. I have some pullets but not what you are looking for. I have all Large Fowl generic layer types. Barred Rocks, Buff Orps and the like.
They are 3 months ish maybe. I have to look at a calendar. I'm just north of Janesville if you get desperate enough to forgo your ideal chickies...
Also there are some very nice cochin breeders in this state. The Lunds are probably one one of the best breeders of cochins in the country. They might be able to help you out or they would know who to contact. Their website is :http://www.lundpoultry.com/
The also have Calls. They are out of Brooklyn but got to a bunch of shows so you might be able to hook up with them at some point.

Ok well, off I got to get lunch!
Later!!
