Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Heather, good thing you're not milking goats,,,,,(no comment on that AC in the coop, but can I crash there if I do a road trip this summer?)

vicki, I have some of the BSL's from Sunnyside, the cross is RIR X Barred Rock,,,,I have a couple that have indicated the broody behavior but if I move them a couple of times they have quit,,,,it's pretty much bred out of them I think. I have 3 hens that have been broody for weeks now,,,,,I plan to move them into a cage off the ground, a friend told me this seems to work for him,,,mentioned they can't keep the temp up underneath,,,don't know until I try it

OK,,,a question for you experienced folks. I have a Black Copper Marans pullet (18wks) that has an eye problem. Just started today, one eye was shut, I caught her and flushed it really well with Saline. A small amount of yellow discharge had crusted the outside lid closed. After getting this washed off and continued flushing the eye was almost normal. Within an hour it was again shut. I would guess it is an injury, scratch, scape deal,,,,,suggestions as to what to use after flushing tomorrow? She was calm and relaxed during and after the treatment, which is pretty cool since I really don't handle these birds,,,,,,

ok,,,,,,,long hot day,,, a shower is next on my list (then ICE CREAM!)
Unkadan~ THANK YOU! I contacted sunnyside to find out what they were but they wouldn't tell me

so I just assumed by their looks, friendliness and size, they must be some kind of Aussie mix. (but just guessed at the "mix" part) Now that makes more sense. I really thought at first she was sick because of her initial behavior (not like a normal "broody"). Thing that had me thrown is the crazy chicken is still laying! Out-foxed her yesterday. After she finally laid her egg, mid afternoon, I kicked her out (actually carried her, hubby laughing as i came across the yard with her tucked under my arm and her trying to eat me

) and closed the pop hole. ( Everybody was in the little yard/garden fenced area right next to back door and the only shade was under our big canopy, so it was safe.) She was a happy camper but as soon as the pophole was re-opened, zzzzzip, in she went!. Guess I just never thought of broody since there is no rooster now, tho there were ALOT of them where she came from.
Now I feel REALLY dumb. Didn't spot a broody hen right off, DUH.

Can I plead "oldtimers"?

Oh, wait, air-conditioned coop? Ok, now I don't feel quite so crazy

good morning everyone, Hope you are all staying as cool as possible. I love the air conditioner for the coop idea, I am sure the ladies would love that, instead, I am just changing the water twice a day, leaving the windows open in their coop and turning on the sprinkler once a day. I hope this hot weather ends soon, although tomorrow it is supposed to be over 100. I am thinking about building a second coop next to the ladies coop, That way I can get my chicks next spring and not have to worry about them fighting. I will have to see if it is in the budget. The Ladies have been eating fresh peas and watermelon. They certainly like them. I have a wasp nest under the shade lean too. I have get get spray and get them tonight. I am allergic to bee stings, so will have go go out in several layers, what fun in this heat

well have a good day , happy 4th of July

where to begin ? AC in the coop.. good idea.. it really should not have to run that much in such a small space .. maybe you could put it on a timer so it will come on about once per hour for about 10 minutes.. I am surprised that your DH went along with it..

I had about 4 comments to make, but now I will have to go back a few pages to jog the brain..

Ken, you gotta learn to chill .. you can't control everything all the time..

I let the birds loose and only fed them.. I will go water everything in a while..
there is always water somewhere in the yard, not always the cleanest, but they will survive.. sometimes they will stand next to a clean pan of water and drink out of the muddy puddle next to it..

the chickens are getting big enough to pick out the roos.. should have a lot of freezer fillers soon..

I have an empty pen at the moment,, I should grab a few of those roos and put them into it and start to fatten them up for fryers.. (no CC, eating fryers,, not monks..)

I wonder if it will be too hot to hill the rest of the potatoes today?

speaking of hot.. I did get the AC into the window in our bedroom.. can you say Aaaahhhh ?
I turned it off when I went to bed... it was way cool enough..

Happy 4th to All... We are getting beat up awfully bad without any AC here...bigfams chickens have it better than me and suzie.

Have a safe holiday.

Cleaning the house this morning.... I have unwanted relatives showing up later today. There is no way the house will pass their white glove test but I can make and effort to get some stuff picked up and the vacuuming done.

HOT HOT HOT!!!!!! Going to the beach again today, then a backyard BBQ followed by some fishing maybe..... I cannot imagine us catching much with this heat though. Have to fit some grocery shopping in there sometime too!

Everyone take it easy in this heat, do the bare minimum outside, drink lots of water, and stay cool!

You guys and us too Bigz! I woke up with a migraine this morning and it has passed without going full blown...thank God! I laid here on the chair under the fan for an hour and a half. Did the trick. Really havent slept well at all the last two nights! Now I am cursing myself for not having DH put the window unit in the LR! Last year was the first time we used it but at least the humidity was out of the house...
Meeting my brother and his fam from FLorida at the Machine Shed for lunch at 11:30--looking forward to the car ride! It will be nice to see them again for sure. Hopefully when they go back they willl take their weather with them. They were so disappointed that it's too hot to come here...my neice really loves the farm and wanted to go horseback riding.

Man I feel like a very tired wet noodle...I have to go and check birds and make sure all are fed etc...and maybe close my eyes for a little bit too. I had a heat casualty last night...one of the buckeye hens. From the color of her legs she wasnt a layer...had food and water...must have been the heat!

Happy Fourth to all--no fireworks here...not even supposed to grill!! But who wants to start the oven? Looks like my canning wont get done for the fair...I thought I signed up for salsa and pickled eggs but I cant get a hold of them today. My beans are just now flowering so they wont be ready to can by Thursday for sure!

Have fun today! Terri O

Hi all (again!)
In case someone is interested:
Just wanted to post a link that I found regarding firework bans in Wisconsin. It's the closest I could come to where the bans are.
http://host.madison.com/ct/news/loc...cle_bdba82ca-c140-11e1-943f-001a4bcf887a.html

I've been reading up trying to find info on it, more for grilling then anything, but I did notice a some cities are not hosting firework displays. Just though you guys might want to know that in case any of you might be in the ban areas and want to go see fireworks tonight....

Happy 4th everyone!

Hope everyone can stay cool. We are hanging out inside where it is cooler. My parents don't have A/C in their house but do have a field stone basement so that helps keep them cool, we told them if it gets to warm they should pack up and come up by us. Will check on them again today! It's already hot out there-have a fan on in the garage moving air for the bunnies and chickens- seems to help. Have to check on the chickens again throughout the day just to make sure.

Kids are working on their 4-H projects for Dane Co fair- hopefully the weather won't be so hot

Finished making up the jams and jelly that they will be takening in to show. DD is getting very good at the steps, DS(10) is getting better so we'll see how they do.

Guess I am need to help stop a bleeding paper cut.....

Have a good one!
