Good Morning everyone My oldest DD is finally back home. My youngest turned 4 yestarday and my oldest step-DD turns 16 today. So needless to say I've been a bit distracted. On the chicken front its been 6 days ( or more can't remember) since getting a white egg in the coop and still nothing. The kids and I have seached the weeds and brush and havent found anything. Go figure. But my Barred Rock keeps giving brown eggs and yestarday she gave a double yolker Poor thing took forever took forever to lay it. As for the garden, eh its not pretty. But oh well maybe it will be better next year.
Well thats about it, sorry for not commenting on anyones posts. I hope everyone has a great day.

So one point that was brought up by my opposition is that there are people with neighbors who do not pick up after their dogs messes, so what happens when they get chickens and they do not clean up after them? Anyone have a good argument for that? All I can think of is that's a lot of what ifs and you cannot predict the future; not a good enough response in my book.

OK--this is what you can say...the chickens will IMPROVE their yards because when out to free range, they will scratch up the dog poo so it is more easily able to go back into the earth. Then the dogs (as we all know) will eat the chicken poo! There you have it--two problems solved just by obtaining chickens!

and yes, you do not have to give me credit for this statement!

So, good morning and now I have to go out and let critters out before I can go to work...really wanted to get up early and hunt the fox but we have a big tree down back there and it cant really get in the chicken yard unless it crawls under...but it also makes lots more places for chickens to hide too! I just wish they would all stay in until I let them out! Guess I have to build a bigger coop!

Morning all!

Ok, I haven't caught up on the latest posts yet, had to post this first!

It is already hot so the fans are going and the doors are open. I am at my computer in the livingroom with my cuppa sending TIKI a message when, wait, I hear a chicken? Ok, must be somebody laying an egg but really loud this morning! Back to typing. A few minutes later I hear a chicken again. This time it's not a BRAWK! from what I think is the direction of the coop but just a cluck, cluck, cluck and it's coming from, BEHIND ME???

I turn around and there is Crockpot, on the chair, by my front door???? peeking thru the screen at me!!!!

WHAT!!! This a chicken that is supposed to be in her locked run, surrounded by 5 ft. fences, that, when the gate is open, leads into the garden, aka chicken play yard, surrounded by 4 ft. fences.

What???? I open the screen, she sits there waiting for me to scoop her up, which I do and carry her back to the run expecting to see everyone else loose because I must have forgotten to close the gate when I let them out this morning and she managed to escape the garden area. Made sense, right? NOPE! Gates all closed, everybody else where they belonged! The only thing amiss was the pophole was closed and everyone was wanting in so they could go lay their eggs!

I put Crockpot down, open the pophole and in goes everyone and they pile into the nest boxes. I check the fences, I check the gates. Nothing is amiss. Great. Now I have a houdini chicken that knows how to come and get me any time she wants!

Ok, it's official. I must face the facts. I've went way too far in spoiling these chooks and they now own ME!

Oh Vicki... You are SO owned by your chickens now!!! Crockpot is the ringleader of a secret chicken organization created to fool their owners into thinking they are in charge. That is until the time when the chicken coup Is at hand. Be careful dear... Better keep a big bunch of treats handy to stay on their good side....

Sick chicken is still hanging on butnot very well. Tonight we will put her down if she is not gone already. I am at work today otherwise would be doing it now. She is just not getting up and just closes her eyes and is breathing hard now. I might try to do it with the excitement of packing so the kids are distracted by doing something else.
Cant believe the disney trip is here. Planning and saving for a year and now it is here. Kids are excited and so am I, but have never packed for all 4 of us for a week.

Jim~ I am soooo glad we don't live closer! I would never see my DH! He is always tearing his big old tractor, one of several little tractors, etc. apart and just loves to help other "addicts" do the same

Cindlady- we had an egg they other day that was not much bigger than a robins egg. We thought maybe it was just a small egg. Maybe it was from a younger chicken?

Hot hot today. Not feeling too well- stupid back. Hoping to finish up my peach jam. I should be hoeing the sweet corn, but I don't feel like sweating my butt offh in the heat, so it will have to wait. No eggs yesterday, so my DS9 went to check it out this morning and all there that was there was another broken egg. Same place as last time, right under the roost. Don't know what the problem is, but I wish they would just lay in the boxes like they should

So, I happened to mention to DH our discussion on roller skates. He did not ask us why were were discussing roller skates. Instead he broke out with a song that is now stuck in my head. So being the good person that I am, I thought I'd share it and maybe get it stuck in your heads as well!!

looks like I will have a one eyed Marans, treatment didn't work but she seems fine, named her Squinty

girls are laying well again, 4 of the 20 wk olds are laying pullet eggs no dark eggs yet from the Marans

fixed my disc, worked the resting side of the garden, re-plant buckwheat b4 the rain on Wedsday

found a cabinet incubator and a hatcher, get those picked up in a couple weeks ready for next years hatching

Well I found mom and babies. She ended up having 5 kittens, 3 girls and 2 boys. Had them in my sheet drawers, all over my pottery barn bed set. Got some poor quality pics because I had to use a flashlight because there's no lights in there.


On another note, I'm down to 3 SLW. Don't ask how >.>
