What does everyone do with their feed "dust", after a week the bottom half of my feeder is fine particles of feed, which the chickens don't seem to eat...

It's getting to expensive to throw out...

Ideas????

amberflea...I see you are from Iola. I'm in Waupaca. As for the dust.... first thing....what brand of feed do you use? I get mine from JayMar and don't have too much of a problem with the dust. I usually just leave it in the feeder and eventually they eat it. Especially the babies. I don't feed the babies anything special when they are with the mommy. She feeds them what she wants to feed them.

Thanks for the offers on a new roo everyone, but I think I may be getting rid of the birds soon. Well, letting the live here til their end any way.

I buy my feed from Fleet... I do get my dog food at jaymar, but typically they are alot higher priced, so stick with the FF Chicken feed. I have mixed the feed dust up with water into a mash, and they do seem to eat it, but of course if its not gone in a day it starts getting moldy in the hot weather...

OH BUMMER

, the pipping chick didn't make it and there is no sign of life from the last egg. Left it with her of course, but not really hopeful. After all, I think it's a little miracle that even one hatched!

Now, a question. Should I leave just the one chick with mom or brood it? What do you think? It's been 24 hrs and that last egg isn't showing any promise, at least yet, so if I leave the chick with her, she's not showing any sign of wanting to move off the nest. I know they can do fine for a day or two, but what if that egg hasn't hatched, then what? If I take the chick for a couple days will she take it back? Really lost here. Guess maybe I should switch this post to another thread.

Awww, sorry to hear that, Vic.

I'd say leave her on the nest for a day or 2 more. The chick should be ok, but you can try to put a little bowl of feed mixed with water so the chick can eat & get a little moisture if it wants. Where is your nest box? Is it high off the ground? Is it separate from your other hens?
Maybe candle the egg tonight to look for movement? Otherwise, I think Jim can tell you how to float the egg to look for movement?
I personally would not take the chick from her.

AmberFlea-insteresting-my feed is from FF as well-wonder if this is more of an issue with their feed. I also don't remember this being as much of a problem until recently?

sooo,,, one of those days here where no matter what I try to do the weather changes my plan,,,sunny, drizzle, sunny, RAIN,,,and it is cool with a breeze,,,,went to the gh and stayed there for a couple hours did some much needed cleanup

reading about the dust, I set feed containers outside of the 2 smaller coops for the day, that dust gets dumped every evening, whatever is left on the ground the younger birds pick at the next day,,,,when I clean the hanging feeder in the big coop I do mix the dust with some water and feed it back,,,they think it's a treat

set to help a friend butcher his 20+ roosters Tuesday, plan to do another 6 of mine at the same time,,,Little Jerry is looking nervous

Thanks Amyable and Celtic Chick ~ I didn't do anything to the cockerels, But I sure was upset when I wrote that. Then the internet got shut off so I couldnt delete it. lol That will show me for writing bad stuff about offing chickens. LOL Well I have one little baby girl that looks like mama. I locked her in a cage for a day and then had to let her out she couldnt stand being locked up. I guess if it is meant to be she will survive the big out of doors. She seems pretty capable. I thought I lost my other modern game hen but I found her in the morning eating and then gone again. After a three day search I now know where she is brooding her eggs. Under the neighbor's trailer!!!!

Those are cool pictures unkadan of the deer enjoying supper with the girls! My birds share with the rabbits daily. I come walking out around 6pm and rabbits are charging everywhere and all of a sudden the chickens notice them and seem mildly alarmed. LOL


Vicki~Watch your mama so she takes care of the baby. If left to eggs or chicks the broodies will stay on the eggs and ignore the chicks. I heard that somewhere. Take the egg gently and put it to your ear and tap it lightly. Or you could whistle at it.

Anyways back to reading and catching up.

Thanks Tiki, that's what I had read too. I checked the egg just a bit ago and made the call. I honestly don't believe it was viable so for the sake of the chick I have (bird in the hand

) I made the call and removed it. I kicked mom out to stretch so I could get a good look at the baby and make sure all was well and it is! The chick right now appears that it is going to be white but has little black "polka dots" here and there. Oh how I hope it is a girl! All I know for sure is "daddy" is a PROBABLY a Lakenvelder. Momma could be just about anything but an egger, literally. My neighbor has an eclectic mix of 2 Lak hens, 1 egger, 1 cochin mix, a black polish? mix, (has a sort of top knot), 1 battery red, 1 battery black, 2 battery whites, and there might be a couple more nondistinct hens running with her younger, white mutt roo. It's like unwrapping a Christmas present and realizing the "present" isn't in the right box!

I do hope this little fluff ball makes it. Keep you posted.

despite the threatening looking clouds, I painted some of my "random" colors.. the grill is white, the gas tank is white and the engine block is black.. I might paint the valve cover and the oil pan white.. I must have an artistic gene in me somewhere, eh Unka ?

I went to harbor freight this AM and bought a ring compressor, a hone and a ring pliers.. too many dead ends trying to borrow those kinds of tools. nobody actually buys them,, everybody must borrow them from the one person who bought them... In this case the lender will be me...

DD#1 called me from a rummage sale she was at.. I was close by so I stopped in.. I bought a LG bator with a turner, a 60 pound hanging feeder, a 6 gallon waterer, and a box with automatic waterers and jug type waterers and 2 electrical strips,

I have the feeder in use already.. it holds a 50 pound sack of feed with room to spare.. I have ground oats and corn in it.. I just hope it doesn't "bridge" and hang up..

Packer Evening All... busy with the salsa batch for my son....lookin good...I love grinding the red chilies whole and kinda fresh...super tasty and worth the effort.

One can use the left over stuff in the bottoms of the feeders kinda like mash....warm water mixed to just pasty will be a hit with the flock.... they will think its heaven...no kidding. ( not when their full)

Just busy daily stuff here...thankful for that.
