Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Made a baked Ham and a side of sauteed apples and cabbage tonight for dinner. I was going to make some bread to go with it but we ended up out at my in-laws so I treated them to dinner (no big deal, they have our ducks).

DD went out hunting with the BF yesterday morning, he shot 3 ducks. She was quite the trooper, carrying the game and wading though the marshes. I would have had a hard time watching somebody shoot ducks, or geese.

DD is going to try for her license tomorrow.....

stay off the roads.......

BBP, good luck with your mare.

Hi All....

Jim... The keet is a chipmunk. Of all that hatched (14) only 2 were lavenders and no whites. The guinea that raised her own only has 1 chipmunk left. I still have a lavender from the ones the hen and rooster are raising. My white hen I haven't seen for a few of weeks so she could be hiding somewhere on a nest. I was hoping she would show up with keets when this one hatched

I'm somehow going to grab them if she does. No more letting guineas keep keets!

BBP...Hope your mare is going to be OK.... scarey.

TO... glad you had a good time!

DrH.... Boy did you get spoiled! What dose she want? LOL

I'm sure I missed stuff but CRS

The turkeys are in the chicken tractor for now. I threw a tarp over them to keep the frost off. They were sleeping in the trees where they came from so they should be OK. They will be penned for the winter, then they get their wings clipped. Can't have 'em flying to the neighbors. That's how come we got them! They look so big compared to the chickens! About the size of a goose. I was talking to the lady I got them from and she said she was looking to get some more chickens..... hummmm.... I just happen to have more than I planed on! LOL so I'll be sending some nice POLs her way. Turkeys for chickens.... I got a deal! Wish she wanted a nice roo!

Well, back to work.... night all!

Good Morning Chicken People! Cind obviously she doesn't want to be warm this winter if she's bringing me beer while I'm supposed to be working.

We do little things for each other all the time, it makes for a very good relationship!

Frosty again this morning think today I'll get the gas line line rearranged, make a bunch of b'fast burrito's, and compost most of the garden. Should get the splitter checked out and get it out of the garage so L [me] doesn't have to scrape windows. See that's another little thing I do, I go out and warm up her car in the winter. I'm usually up before her and when I hear her getting up a fresh cuppa is waiting for her with the handle even pointing the right direction. It's just the kind of guy I am. Actually trying to fix the karma from my past.

The snow just missed us yesterday. Didn't think it was supposed to freeze last night hope the outside water pail didn't crack! Thinking the new kids are going to be just that the new kids. The older hens just don't want them in with THEM. Snots! BBP Send me! Send me!

good morning folks

missed frost last night and supposed to be 65º today!! don't remember the last time it was 60º (and no it's not "short term")

DrH do you put the seat down?

Jim glad you got unplugged I suggest more fiber

venison IF processed correctly is rarely strong and then imo only an older buck in rut,,,,just sayin'

off to pick some peppers and maters from the gh, need to decide how long I will let these go before cleaning up those beds

Morning!

DD is going to be taking her driving test this AM (she was late last time so we had to reschedule)..... I hope my car survives.....

Visited the ducks last night...... they look so scraggly when they are unable to bathe. We need to relocate their pen, right now they are under a row of pines but open all around. There is nothing stopping North winds from whipping through their pen, so we will have to figure out someplace else to put them so they survive the winter. They also need to be close to electricity so they can have their waterer plugged in and I need to pick up another 'spa' for them so they can splash away inside their pen.

With venison, as long as it is summer sausage I can eat it (and BigZ's Jerky). Any other form the flavor is just not appealing. To me, it has a distinctive taste just like lamb. I suppose it has to be something you grew up eating.

Morning everyone!
very crispy here, brrrrrr! Warming up fast but bird baths etc., still frozen. guess today I get to see what survived in the garden.

Poor little Stirfry. Looks like she may have had another internal break? No shell but she was clearly "leaking" (more like globbing) what I figured out to be yolk (color, etc. had me stumped for a minute). Sorry for the graphics so early in the a.m.

She was droopy yesterday mostly standing in the sun inside the pophole with her eyes closed. At one point she was standing there and her head would suddenly shake almost like a shiver but to one side and then the other. I cleaned up her bum and slathered her bare bottom with vaseline to protect the skin and insulate it a bit from the cold night to come. Later she seemed better and did roost. Was in no hurry to leave the coop this morning, but since it was COLD and she's not exactly 100% I couldn't blame her there. Check on her again in a little while. If she doesn't bounce back this week when it's warmer, well, we'll see. She did recover rather quickly from the last one but never layed again (tho she did hop in and out of the nests) and altho happy and active, still seemed much more effected by temperature change than her sisters. anyone have any input as to what's going on? Is there any hope for her?

Everyone else is fine. Waited till the weather warmed a bit so there would be less initial stress but today Soup gets the peepers. She just will not stop being a brat and it's filtering down so that everyone but mom is now chasing after poor little Noodle. I'm hoping once Soup is calmed, everyone else settles down. Odd thing is no one is picking on poor weak Stirfry ( except Soup plucking her feathers if she can of course).

Has anyone else checked out the new thread "a road less traveled........." . Very interesting and extremely well written. Like reading the beginning of a novella. If interested it's in Emergencies etc.

Morning all!
Well, why is it that all your favorite chickens are the ones that kick the bucket before their time!?!?! Agh!!! This morning I went out to do coop chores and Lavender the Andalusian was not in her normal place. IE pecking my jeans. I didn't think much of it until I found her dead.
hit.gif
I was shocked! She was 100% fine yesterday doing annoying Lavie things. DH heard some commotion in the coop last night but the dogs didn't do the "predator" alert bark they have. I pulled her out and will take a look at her. If I can't find anything obvious I'll ask DH to post her. She is in good weight and was not showing any symptoms of illness. It might just be one of those things.

Other then that, the other chickens are all fine. Even the meaties are great.

Oh, so When we went to Portage, we stopped by TSC on the way home. I found a "new" product from the the folks who make Save-A-Chick. It is a probiotic. I though that'd be a good thing to have on hand. Anyway, I was talking to DH about it and he told me he had an interesting talk with Ron Keane about probiotics and yogurt. According to that Ron said, turns out that yogurt is not good for chickens. Ron said that the probiotic in yogurt is the wrong type for chickens and that they cannot process it. Since they can't process it, then they get loose stool or diahrea. Interesting.....

BBP-Hope your mare gets better

DrH-So what L needs to do is get herself a good squirrel and dumpling stew recipe and de -squirrel some of your trees! Then they might start getting little brooms and run from her!! LOL!!!!

Well, I'm sure there was more but just can't remember and I need to go do more critter chores.

BBL

ETA:
Vicki-sounds like Stirfry is getting near the end of her lay cycle or she is an internal layer?. Some hens survive the "change of life" and some do not. I hate to say she might be in the not category. Not much you can do. If you can nurse her thorough this one it might be the "last" one. However, I'm actually more concerned she might develop an internal infection. If you have any give her a shot of Penicillian (sp) in her breast muscle. Ummm...depending on her weight 1/2cc to 1cc. I'd do 1cc every other day for 3 days. There might be rare chance she is allergic to Pen and if that is the case she will keel over right then and there. I'm not sure who much you can do for her since she has done this before. Good luck!

Good morning....spent too much time talking with DD26 this morning and posting my friends' wedding on FB. DrH I met a guy uyp there that is from NEkoosa and I described you and he said he knows you! He told me the crossroads where you live...I cant remember the names though...so tell me and it might jog my memory? I wonder still if he was pulling my leg; he was kinda a blowhard type guy! LOL!

So we havent had a hard frost here or maybe not even a light one! My basil is STILL alove and that is usually the first to go. I guess I better get the house plants in (and shrink my house) cause this wont last forever! I got lulled into it last year and ended up losing some plants to the eventual frost...like it wasnt going to happen hey? DUH!

OK--I have to go to work---have a fantastic day! TerriOcleaningcookingandbathingtoday....

Thank you MLH! I appreciate your wisdom so much

Since she is "supposed" to be only approx. 24 months old, don't think she's reaching the end of her laying cycle, but? She appeared the least healthy of all of them from the beginning (last spring). she's the one that "leaked" like she had vent gleet but nothing worked to stop the leakage. (trust me, tried it all) Up until the internal break (?) a couple weeks ago she was otherwise healthy and a happy chicky egg layer. Honestly, I am surprised she is still alive. She must have one strong will to survive
hugs.gif
I just wonder at this point if there is anything more I can do for her. She's had a wonderful summer just being a chicken with no harassment from a rooster or trapped in a horrible, crowded cage so even tho it is hard, she is really the sweetest little chicky, I am at peace with whatever comes next. Guess I was just curious as to what may be happening now and if she is suffering. Poor little battery bred chooky.
