Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good Frosty Morning Everybody! Second hard frost of the year. This time the ground is white. 30* here. CChase Welcome to the Cheeseheads hope you find us entertaining and helpful. Good people here! Cind Congrats on the hatchling! And glad Rose seems to be OK. I know all about "plans". BL4 hope your hacking goes away soon! Dan hope you were able to at least sting that yote! Jim take a half inch piece of square stock and grind it for a tight enough fit that you have to drive it in then heat the area around the plug with an acetylene torch doubt that you'll get enough heat from a propane torch and use a hand impact. If that doen't work then it's time to try to weld something on it. Probably a cast iron plug though. If that doesn't work then it's time to drill it out and collapse the plug. The problem will be the chips getting inside you can pack the drill bit with grease to catch some of them as long as you don't get it too hot, drill for a bit wipe off and replace the grease. Bigz congrats to the future SIL! Nice to get that done in one fell swoop! Those nacho's aren't just any nacho's their L's nacho grande supremeo's!

Isn't Paula cool? She has quite the breeding program. Glad to hear she doing good, miss her on here along with so many others. Don't know about Tomski but I sent FT an E mail and she was in Racine. Her fiesty Aunt isn't doing very well. ET is doing good and she has been super busy but is planning on getting back on here real soon. As tiki said she's been making pickles per ET's request and is having phone and internet problems. She told me I was the bestest but think she says that to all the guys.

Had a lazy day yesterday didn't do much but watch old sci-fi movies. Seems to have served it's purpose feel like doing something today. Heading out back to get some wood made. The kids are sure enjoying access to the garden. I don't get that guilty look when I go out there anymore.

First test of the coop's draft-proofing and insulation and I think we are good to go!

found lots of sites talking about the posters but no one with copies, yet. Still looking. If I can get a good file copy I just might resort to having them made myself.
Been stalling about putting the peepers on Soup but I guess I am going to have to today. This morning she was worse than ever. Yesterday she even pulled feathers out of Momma (aka Fricassee) and I've never seen her do that before. My ladies are just finally, or were, getting feathers back on their butts and they are going to need those feathers come winter! sigh.

good AM, cold isn't it ? It will warm up a bit this week..

Cind, I would keep those turkeys.. I already know of somebody who would buy some from you..
Kim ??

I don't know much about that breed, but I treat all the others alike..

I keep the new hatchlings separated from any area previously used for chickens for at least 12 weeks.. I have a large raised pen in which I do this.. their immune system is very weak at this time.. if they are put where the chickens were, they easily get Blackhead.. You will see symptoms, but by that time they are doomed.. they will be dead within 2 days.. there is no cure..

once they get beyond this critical stage, I turn mine loose to freerange with all the other birds..
so far this has worked for me..

the cage to keep them in is called a "porch"..

It seems like a lot of extra work, but it really isn't..

Dr H, thanks for the plug removal advice.. I figured you would know.. last night I came up with making a similar tool .. I have a piece of 3/8 stock.. I might have some 1/2 inch too..
I do not have a torch.. just propane .. I have used the propane for brake work with mild success.. this plug prolly has 57 years of rust on the inside.. good idea about the grease and chips.. (that sounded like something to eat, didn't it ?) Do they make a diamond drill bit ?? IDK why that plug acts like it is hardened ..

there was more,, slips me mind..

good morning folks

hopefully this is the last day of this crappie weather,,sun, sleet, sun, rain, and damp cold, no dreams of skunks but I do have a few aches to keep me rolling around

got the layer coop almost cleaned yesterday, finish removing the deep litter from the summer then pressure wash it down today along with the other end that is coming into use soon,,,if I get the windows removed it should dry with a fan or 2 running

had friends at the Portage show,,,made the contact with one of the breeders that had some roosters for me to pick from,,,sent me pics with their smart phone,,,,I passed on the deal,,,these were BCM roos and they weren't any better than what I have here out of the 6 Memorial Day hatch,,,,,technology saved the day,,,lol

my BW/W Ameraucana birds from W Meredith will be here Friday I need to finish the coop remodel by then for quarantine, lock down for 3-4 days then a tempt run for them until I can move the other 4 pullets in, hopefully this all goes well and next spring I'll have some excellent stock for eggs and chicks (anyone see chicken math at work here?)

ok,,,gotta get on this list

My mare is getting worse! I think I hate my vet. When someone calls saying their mare that recently gave birth can hardly walk, shouldn't it be taken seriously? Monday at 1 is the soonest she'll come. I called Friday morning only to get a snotty attitude. I should have tried to call someone else right away. she's off pasture, grain and is only getting grass hay for now. This is where the bad dreams come from, stress.

BBP, sent you a PM. I think I would give Terri a call. She might know something about what is going on with your mare.

Breakfast of Champions this AM! Coffee, Apple turnover and bacon!!!! I do not think I will need to eat lunch with THAT calorie load!

Trying NOT to cough........ torture, but if I do I know it will HURT! Hoping that after I shower things will loosen up a bit...

I should really motivate here. It is so nice to just sit and be lazy......

Ciao!

, well it looks like our garden is just about done for the year. We picked the rest of the tomatoes yesterday afternoon, just have to dig the row of carrots yet. DH and I removed all the row markers and watering system and he mowed the garden off. The area we covered with black plastic had a bunch of mic or moles living underneath- he said they scattered as he went over that area!

2 soccer games this afternoon, hopefully it will be a little warmer than yesterday's games.

outside to help fininsh up chores,

enjoy the day!

Morning all!
Love the chilly weather!!!! I will have to inspect the tomato plants and see how they held up. Not sure if we got frost this far south yet but I know we've got some "hard frost" in the forecast soon.
Time to winterize the ol' homestead!
The rabbits and chickerdoodles are all good.

BBP's night mare reminded me of one had night before last. Earlier in the day I had the radio on and some Chevy "truck month" commercial was on it. So later that night my sub-conscious mind must have gone into "we need a new truck mode" So it send me a nightmare. I dreamed that DH decided to trade my beloved Dodge Ram aka Snowflake aka Miss. Piggy for a new truck. He traded Her in for a *gasp* Chevy! A gray chevy Silverado. I woke up in a sweat. It was horrible!!

A big

to Cchase25! The Cheeseheads here are the bestest in the whole widest world! Hope you stop by often!

BBP-I haven't been following your mare's situation from when sh foaled. I'd call Terri of try to get a hold of Carol (WCc). They should help. If not call another vet. You are right. That doesn't sound right for her to be that lethargic. Did the vet come out after the foaling and check the placenta to make sure she passed it all? (Not sure if you posted about that or not-sorry.)

Cind-Congrats on the keet!
Midget Whites are very sweet turkeys from what I've read. Those are the ones I want to raise "someday". Jim is 100% correct on the blackhead issue. Some people raise their turkeys with chickens, some raise them just like Jim and some keep the turkeys completely seperated from the chickens at all times. They have a turkey area and they have a chicken area. I guess in depends in you space, current set up. I think what you want to do is great. I'd hang on to them and see what you can get. If it does not work out then you can always process them if you have to.

So as promised here is the pics I told you about last night. These are entitled "Why MLH needs her head examined!"

The hen is from Paula and the rooster id from Adam at ACH Poultry. I think the hen will be Rose or maybe Pearl and the rooster so far is Ringo. But I think his name will be changed!

I had a friend come out who does boarding/training because she's dealt with a few cases of lame horses. Her guess is that it is an abcess. She also suggested that I switch to her vet. So I'm canceling the Monday appointment and calling this other guy to come out. I'll.get him to give the foal a look over to.
