I found out that the 3 gallon plastic waterers from fleet where the jug snaps into the base,,cannot be hung by the handle .. one of two things happen.. either the birds push the bottom off, thus draining the jug... or the pressure on the screw on cover unseats the "O"-ring , again draining all the water onto the floor.. Not always,, but enough times to where I stopped trying to hang them..

The hose was frozen for the first time this fall.. It thawed on it's own when the sun came up.. another reason to not like cold weather..

back to the game.. bbl..........

I have the same problem here with that style of 5 gallon waterer. Have mine up on a cement block now instead of hanging it. Must say I'm really liking the clean bucket waterer I got from Premiere. I do have it hanging and haven't had any troubles with it yet.

ANGIEBUBS~I have the same 3 gal. waterer from FF (mine has the 2 stage heater tho). I always fill mine thru the bottom plug, it's just so much easier. Only take it apart from the base for cleaning. I think mine may be from a different manufacturer than yours. (There were two brands when I bought mine last spring).

JIM~never tried to hang mine, just built a base for it to sit on. Never trusted the look of that handle to hold that much weight without something breaking or sagging. Besides, mine is the plug in kind (as mentioned above) and I could just see a chook deciding that swinging cord looking like something fun!

Just came in from setting the waterer up to be plugged in for tonight. We got lucky with the temps last night but we will hit the high teens for sure tonight. Put plastic on the inside of the east coop window while I was at it but I think I am going to need to put the heavier plastic on the outside as well. Too hard to get a good seal around all the window hardware and that side of the coop has nothing to block the wind. The other, larger, south facing window is a new double self-insulated type so I don't need to do anything to it and it can still be opened if extra ventilation is needed.

Have a question. Do any of you put anything over your pop holes? Mine is weather stripped and ALWAYS closed at night but do you put anything over them to hold heat in the daytime?

Vicki, heat generally rises, so I imagine that the amount that you would lose through a pop hole would be minimal? I do have a clear plastic flap that goes on my pop door but I've never used it. Unless the wind was really whipping & blowing directly into the door, I don't think it is anything to worry about.

I have read of people who have made short tunnels or hallways that you can put in front of the pop holes that veer off to the right or left side on a 90* angle to help deflect incoming winds from blowing directly in the door. Then they remove it in the nicer months. HTH

and no Heather I am not going to try it out,,,, for a few months at least!

I do have it plugged in and it appears to work fine
