Witnessed A Vandalism CLOSE-UP (UPDATE Post# 116)

Funny you should mention him! There's a story about him (another story) but not sure if I should put it here. Ah, what the heck, I'm allowed to hijack my own thread aren't I? A few weeks ago I put my trash out as normal on Wednesday. In fact, it was the week of the 4th, because he didn't pick it up, but I assumed it must be because of the holiday so I thought nothing of it. Dragged it all back up the hill until the next week so raccoons wouldn't get it. Next week came, brought it all back down plus new trash from the second week. Wednesday came and left again and no trash guy. So Thursday I call him to see what's up. He answers, realizes it's me, and is very hesitant. He says in a mopy voice, "Oh, I guess you didn't get the card I left in your door, the wind must have blown it away". Makes me think of the classic criminal denial before an accusation, because I hadn't even said anything yet. And I know darn well he did not leave a card in my door. He's left bills loosely tucked in my door for a year and they've never blown away, but miraculously this card supposedly did. So anyway, I say, "So what's going on?" Now I can't tell this verbatim, but he carries on and on with this strange and vague story about how he was "ordered to cease and desist", and then something about fines, and legal trouble, and some guy he hired who "screwed him over" and now he will no longer be doing the trash. He could have just been making up some tall tale, or maybe he really did get into some sort of trouble, which wouldn't surprise me. If you remember, I said I got a bad vibe from him a long time ago. He did recently hire a helper, so if I were to guess, I'd say he was doing SOMETHING illegal, possibly dumping trash somewhere, improperly disposing of it, or something like that, then probably had a falling out with this guy and the guy probably ratted him out. So all I know is no more trash pickup. And the worst part is, I had already paid for the month of pickup. He outright said I wouldn't be getting it back "any time soon" (aka never) because now he's out of work and has fines to pay, blah blah. So that P'd me off.

My biggest worry was wondering who the heck would pick up my trash now, because if you recall, the only reason I dealt with this idiot is because no one else would come out this far. But he gave me the name of a company that he said now does this area, as of very recently. I actually didn't believe it, because I had called EVERYONE back when I hired him, but I called anyway. Turns out it's a REAL company, not a guy from downtown in a pickup truck, but an actual large company, who confirmed that they did in fact recently add our area. And they give you bins, they recycle and all that good stuff. Turns out it's 6 bucks less a month than I was paying Idiot too. So it all worked out in the end, thankfully. I've been searching the arrest logs and stuff trying to figure out what Trash Guy did, but haven't been able to find out. Anyway, good riddance. And don't anyone bother to tell me to sue this guy for the month I paid, I guarantee it's a waste of time. It would cost me more money and effort trying to chase him down than it's worth. I figure in a few months, with the money I'm saving with this new company, I'll make back what he owes me, so I'll end up ahead in the end.

So there's your Trash Guy Update!

Okay, so my dad came today to help. I felt terrible about it too, because he was not feeling well at all and had to go right home afterward.

I spent last night painting my new mailbox. Painted a country mural scene on one side. Then realized how long it took me, and also realized it wouldn't be that visible between the others, so I just did my name and some flowers on the other side.

Looks cute though. So my dad arrives and says "Everyone else's mailboxes are already up." This is surprising because as I was just telling you all, my neighbors really are pretty lazy (most, not all of course). So we drive down and I almost died at what I saw. If their names weren't on them I would take a pic and upload it just to prove what I'm about to say: There were 2 new mailboxes. Then about 4 were old rusted junky dilapidated mailboxes that they must have had/found kicking around somewhere. But okay, I'm not judging that. I don't have much money either, I get it, they did what they could. But then 3 were the actual mailboxes that were destroyed!!!! They put them back up, screwed them in place, completely mangled!!! One is so flat that you couldn't fit much more than a couple of envelopes in it. Another is a plastic one that is all broken with NO door and no flag, and another one also has no door and is pretty crushed. My dad said maybe it's just a temporary fix until they get new ones, and I said "Nope. I guarantee they'll stay there." This is exactly what I was saying about them being lazy. I don't mean to sound judgmental, I really don't, but it's just so silly to put these mangled boxes back up and screw them into place.

So here I am with my "pretty painted mailbox"..... oh well. Oh, and no one fixed the stand either. Someone pulled it back upright, but it's so loose it will easily tip over again. We didn't have any wood or anything on us to fix the stand, but I may walk down another time and at least try to brace it upright with a 2 x 4 or something. But the good news is my box is replaced and operable!!!

I took a pic of my little mural, I'll upload it in a bit if it came out clear enough.

Very nice mailbox, hope that will last a long time for you.

Some vandals did go through our 1 mile long road and knocked off every one of the 18 mail boxes that were by the road. Our mailbox is a plastic one, and they must have jerked it off the post. I had to shrew it back on. Those vandals were never caught.

Glad you got your mailbox up, it's beautiful! Maybe it will shame and motivate some others....

We fight mailbox vandalism here, too. At first it was baseball bats, but being in the middle of the row, that wasn't too bad... Then someone started stealing our mail two Christmas' ago, so we put up a $70 locking mailbox. Well our mail was safe enough, but the box got beat up and hit with paintballs. A few weeks ago a vehicle of some sort, it had to be a truck or SUV, came through and plowed over all 5 mailboxes! There were 3 4x4 posts snapped like toothpicks and the mailboxes (3 of them were the $70 locking kind) were decimated.

We talked to the post office and moved the boxes to our side of the road where they are less obvious now. I got a $100 locking box that is better able to accept small packages. I will be livid if these boxes get destroyed! Next step is setting up a hunter cam by the boxes... We never have caught any of our local boys-just-being-boys... but if we ever do, man have I got some words for them & their parents. We're out close to $200 so far, plus time and labor.
