Wolves do not kill for the love of killing...that would be humans...how many people do you know that have mounts from animals that they enjoyed killing? Or pictures of themselves with animals that they killed? Wolves don't do that at all...they kill, eat, and move on...

I have many predators in my area. For the past year, a family of Red Tail hawks have been having a hay day with mine, and my neighbors chickens. Before beefing up my security, I lost 4 chickens just this last summer, my neighbors, many more than that. I went on BYC, looking for ideas, and suggestions of how to improve my security. I was surprised how many told me to SSS. With every single bird I lost, I blamed myself, not the hawks. Not once did I even think about killing them. Why? Because in my mind, they are just doing what comes naturally. I supplied an easy meal, they took advantage of it. It is my responsibility to make my animals safe from predators. I'm not saying that whether introducing wolves to certain areas is right or wrong. I can't honestly argue, when I don't have enough facts from both sides. However, I do know that we wouldn't have to "reintroduce" anything, if man hadn't messed with it in the first place. I know that people, properties and what have you have to expand. Our population is getting bigger. But I think some of us get so caught up in what we feel is our right, we are not thinking of the big picture. I do feel bad for people that have lost animals to wild predators, and I think there is something to be said for "managing" certain strains of species, to ensure balances are kept in check. However, once a species is gone, its gone, and there is no getting it back. JMO.

BTW, a wild predator is not the same as a sexual predator. Wild animals do what they were put on this earth to do. They don't know right from wrong, only instinct. Sexual predators have what is considered an illness. They may have the "instinct" to do what is wrong, but they still know it is wrong.

ETA: I just watched the link provided by Duramax girl. I can feel the pain and frusteration for the farmers and ranchers. It would be hard place to be in. I just wonder if the farmers did all they could to discourage the wolves. Would some sort of guard dogs work as a warning system, or deturant against the wolves? I'm not a farmer, so I don't know, but it just seems to me that this ranchers cattle were just out there like sitting ducks. Noting but a fence between them and the wolves.

I live not even a quarter mile from where i see coyotes on a regular basis. We have several nests of bald eagles and golden eagles not far away. The coyotes stroll through school grounds in the evening on a regular basis. Elks in the backyards are notr unususal either. I know of mountain lion sightings just a county over( a momma and her cubs) I lived in a county in Florida that was famous for its black bear population and gator were plentyful. THey actually lived in a pond surronding the mall.

I live in the mtns where wolves an coyotes are along with other not so nice critters... Its my job to keep my livestock an the predators apart with as little death as possible to ether one. I have an eagle in my yard right now. Freshly reintroduced. I dont need to shoot them cause I have done things to make my livestock less appealing than natural food sources...

I watched the video, but there wasn't any sound, so I couldn't hear what was being discussed. Maybe there wasn't supposed to be sound, idk. I did read the comments below too. Do they know if the wolves were scared off before they could even try to eat what they had killed? They said the calf that was killed was still steaming. Maybe they would of eaten it had people not shown up?

Yes I watched it...most likely the wolves were spooked before they could start eating and that's probably why they left the bodies without eating them...and that's great that you hunt and such...I have nothing against hunters...my sister hunts and other friends of mine do as well...not all hunters are like you or my sister and friends though...there are hunters out there that just kill the animal because they like to kill...I guess the actual term for them would be poachers...

Mainly it looked like to me the problem is the wolves are killing the mothers to take out and eat just the babys inside them. Yes they did talk about the wolves not killing to eat but more for sport.
This happens also with elk.
Kinda sick behavior in my opinion.

Ah yes poachers not looked kindly upon up here in Idaho. we didn't hunt this year. Because among other reasons we don't need meat this year yet... So why hunt?
;)

Wolves can only consume a certain amount of (pounds) of meat per sitting. They eat the choiciest pieces first (internal organs). In nature, they often return to a kill in subsequent days to feed more. In the meantime, other small scavengers and predators also scavenge the carcass. Nothing is wasted, it is for survival, not pleasure. If the wolves could return to the carcass safely, they might do so, and consume more than the initial amount they can consume in one setting, however, they are intelligent and likely have learned not to return to a carcass because farmers might lie in wait to kill them when they return to feed, or farmers remove the carcass.

I would really only have a problem with the wolves if I was not allowed to kill them if they attacked my live stock. They also have new technology out that looks like big radio boxes that when something walks by it makes a loud sound that will scare off the animal. I saw it on tv 2 years ago.
