I have many predators in my area. For the past year, a family of Red Tail hawks have been having a hay day with mine, and my neighbors chickens. Before beefing up my security, I lost 4 chickens just this last summer, my neighbors, many more than that. I went on BYC, looking for ideas, and suggestions of how to improve my security. I was surprised how many told me to SSS. With every single bird I lost, I blamed myself, not the hawks. Not once did I even think about killing them. Why? Because in my mind, they are just doing what comes naturally. I supplied an easy meal, they took advantage of it. It is my responsibility to make my animals safe from predators. I'm not saying that whether introducing wolves to certain areas is right or wrong. I can't honestly argue, when I don't have enough facts from both sides. However, I do know that we wouldn't have to "reintroduce" anything, if man hadn't messed with it in the first place. I know that people, properties and what have you have to expand. Our population is getting bigger. But I think some of us get so caught up in what we feel is our right, we are not thinking of the big picture. I do feel bad for people that have lost animals to wild predators, and I think there is something to be said for "managing" certain strains of species, to ensure balances are kept in check. However, once a species is gone, its gone, and there is no getting it back. JMO.
BTW, a wild predator is not the same as a sexual predator. Wild animals do what they were put on this earth to do. They don't know right from wrong, only instinct. Sexual predators have what is considered an illness. They may have the "instinct" to do what is wrong, but they still know it is wrong.
ETA: I just watched the link provided by Duramax girl. I can feel the pain and frusteration for the farmers and ranchers. It would be hard place to be in. I just wonder if the farmers did all they could to discourage the wolves. Would some sort of guard dogs work as a warning system, or deturant against the wolves? I'm not a farmer, so I don't know, but it just seems to me that this ranchers cattle were just out there like sitting ducks. Noting but a fence between them and the wolves.
