Wolves On My Property!

Quote:
I simply do not believe that. Wolves, like bears, can become habituated to people and once they discover how easy it is to take down cattle as opposed to stalking other large game, they would be stupid not to continue the habit. ESPECIALLY before they started subsisting on voles and mice!

I don't think anyone here thinks wolves are stupid, whatever else they may think.

I was kina wondering how many what kind of wolves are actually in the UK

You go right on believing that in your fantasy world. The native people's of Alaska know MUCH better. It's just not reported because they just handle the situation as they have been for centuries, only now they use guns

Ask them how many dogs they've lost. And how about the problems in Fairbanks? Or the teacher that was attacked. Those are just a few incidents that have been publicized. The rest aren't.

I'm all for the LGD's. I have an AKBASH guard dog bred to protect livestock and he has been wonderful. We were having problems with bears coming in next door and killing the goats, actually carrying them off over the fence. Also bobcats killed about half my flock bef. my dog was added. Coyotes were killing off the neighbors sheep within 2 hrs. of letting them out in the AM. She saw how great my dog was so now she has 2 of the Akbash/Eastern Asian guard dogs and no more problems. The other neighbor across the way lost all her sheep so she got 2 dogs also and now no more problems. I have 5 llamas and still had problems with coyotes sneaking around them. The basic guard dog goes on patrol at night and sleeps during the day but is up and mock 5 when he hears, smells or sees anything. Friendly to people, great with all my lifestock, chickens, horses, llamas, etc. We now can hear where the trouble is at night as barking across the way, then over next door then past my place but nothing is injured anymore. The barking and posturing is enough to make them pass on to something more easily obtainable. I'm a GREAT BELIEVER in the LGD's! from experience. Wild animals go for something that is easier to get if they have the choice. Hope this helps. Google "Akbash dogs" and read about them. Sharon

Wolves are great! Maybe not for your chickens though....however
I agree with the others about getting a big dog. The wolves have a right to be here, and you have a right to own chickens. BUT no use looking for trouble before there is any, and there's nothing to stop anyone from taking PREVENTATIVE MEASURES *without* killing anyone, to include the wolves.

PS - Regarding the LGD's...they are large, mine is about 127-130 lbs. so I'm thinking they probably are at least the size of the larger wolves out there but still, the important fact is, wild animals usually just don't want to mess with them when they are standing there barking & posturing at the edge of the property. They turn away bef. ever trying to come onto it to get the animals. Safer, easier, no one hurt... just a lot of barking when something shows up.

To the OP, I would invest in a strong electric fence for your entire perimeter of your property. After that is in place, begin building an enclosed shelter for your sheep to spend the evening in. Nothing fancy, but enclosed. I have to say that the debate on wolves has been going round for centuries. There is no final, easy solution. Growing up in Minnesota, wolves where a part of life up north. Choosing to own livestock, you accept the possibility that something may prey on them one day. It does not mean that it WILL happen either. I can say that the folks I knew growing up had more problems with coons, mink, and domestic dogs left to run free than they did with wolves. Even if they are changing in the way they see humans, we simply have to change too. An ounce of prevention is worth..............You can only do the best you can to protect your animals. A good electric fence goes a long way. Good luck, and don't assume the worst, but be prepared just in case.
