Gape worms can infect chickens. Earth worms harvested from an area infected with gape worms can be carriers of gape worms. But if your chickens are already scratching around in infected soils they likely already have gape worms.

If you buy worms from a reputable dealer you shouldn't have any problems. I have been feeding our hens the occasional worm for over a year with no problems.

To Onebuggirl, question, why not earthworms? I use them for fishing, and they work great. They are a natural worm in my garden, and do well there. I have wanted to raise more of them, but your comment makes me curious, please enlighten me.

Thanks

This is a good and very informative thread! I am doing my research about vermiculture and have a question that I can't seem to find an answer on. I am looking to use European Night Crawlers instead of red worms. I would like to sell them to a local bait shop as fishing bait. I have read that the ENCs can live past 4 weeks on the store shelf if kept at an ideal temperature. My question is...Say the bait shop lets me sell my worms and not all the worms have sold after 4 weeks, can I take them back and put them in the worm bin again and let them do their thing? I would let them get back to a happy state and then try to sell them again. Thanks in advance.

I have kept night crawlers in my refrigerater in a styrofoam cooler for an intire summer without losing them. I pick them from the yard as the warm weather arrives and brings the rains, then put them in the cooler and use them for fishing. When winter comes I don't use them for fish bait anymore, and throw them into the garden.

I've been reading more about worm farming and have decided to try vermicomposting and was wondering if anyone has done this using 5 gallon pails. I have access to a lot of pails and thought this way could be done. Any suggestions. Thanks
