Wormer?

0.5 cc for each large fowl, 0.25cc for bantams. I put it on bread as well -- it wanted to run off and I needed a decent chunk of bread to soak it up. Dawg53 recommends squirting it in their mouth while on the roost. It doesn't work to put it in water.

Give two doses ten days apart. Toss eggs for 14 days after each dose, or a total of 24 days.

I tried the bread routine and it was a pain - some of my hens would not swallow the darn bread. This year I just squirted in their mouth and it was so much easier. Pull on their wattles and their beak will open.

As for the worm load in your area, I would imagine a vet could tell you as most parasites affect all animals, including humans. I just watch my birds weight, if they start losing a lot of weight, then it's time for another worming. (other issues like internal laying can cause weight loss too) Once a year works great for me and my hens aren't losing weight.

I read in the forum over the week-end a recipe for natural worming having to do with buttermilk, pumpkin seeds, cayenne pepper and so on. If anyone has such recipe could you please let me know where to find it? I can't seem to find it and I have gone through all of the subscribed threads.

Thank you all very much.

I do that too - doesn't work. It may help, but doesn't keep the birds worm free. I give my birds ACV because it's good for their gut and overall health.

I am just getting ready to order wormer - for the whole gang dogs, chickens, horses - and am glad I stumbled upon this thread.

I will be ordering Valbazen for the chickens - Thanks

Anyone know if it can be used on Turkeys or ducks or geese and what the dosage would be??

It's over on the AZ thread, we were just discussing it. Welcome, BTW. I'd probably go the valbazan route and then start using the natural stuff as a preventative if it were my chickens, since they are having problems.

I know this is going to sound real stupid, but where is the AZ thread and how do I get to it?

Not on bread... (evidently the Valbazen tastes bad, mine would not take it on bread at all!) Give Valbazen one dose at a time -- down the throat... AVOID THE WINDPIPE (which is right behind the tongue, you will see it when you open their beak)... So... have someone help you.
Take one chicken at a time, out of the coop.. (hoping you can let them free range or have another coop or pen to put them in if you want to keep them contained)....
Lift the head a little... open the beak.. using a measured dropper or more commonly a syringe (no needle).... you put back, to the side, and down the throat...

1/2 CC/ML per standard size chicken

1/4 CC/ML per Bantam or small chicken

orally, individually... giving it to one at a time and then letting that one go or putting that one somewhere else so you don't get mixed up and give a double dose to one, or miss another.

Now... You have to withhold the eggs... no eating eggs, no eating chickens while Valbazen is in them... so... ON THE TENTH DAY... repeat the process.... dose a second time. Then, after a few days, say the fourth day after the second dose, give them some Buttermilk (or yogurt) mixed in with their food...

Wait an additional 14 days.... two weeks.. so.... no eggs/withhold from first treatment ten days to second treatment and then 14 days after that... on the 15th day it is safe to eat eggs or chickens -- a total of 24 days... safe on the 25th.

Watch the poop after the second treatment. IF, if you see tapeworm segments in the poop... you will have to treat more than twice most likely.... and can use Zimectrin Gold -- "pea" size on bread for standard... "BB" size on bread for Bantam... again, one at a time, separating, don't let anyone get a double dose or be missed. This is if you actually see tapeworm segments after two doses of Valbazen... then you would do this "change up" on the tenth day after the second dose of Valbazen and wait the 14 days after that before eating eggs.

Search here on BYC... you can fully trust info from/by dawg53 on "worming with Valbazen", "Tapeworms", "worming with Zimectrin Gold", "worming".... etc. the Search will give you a lot of good info. We all learn as we go, so I like the more recent posts, more recent year's posts for best info.

Good luck. You can do it...

Be careful to avoid the windpipe with the Valbazen... it's a Milk of Magnesia consistency and is available for a bit more at the local feed store... My feed store keeps a VERY LARGE open bottle and sells "CCs" from that... so that I don't have to buy a whole bottle and let it expire before I use it up.

Take care...

I apologize in advance for jumping on; I have a "stupid" question: If you see worms/tapeworms in the poo does it mean that whatever you fed them irritated the worms? I ask because when i fed my chickens the pumkin guts i saw poops full of roundworms; then yesterday when i fed them banana i saw one hen poop out a bunch of tapeworm segments. I know the natural approach won't work to eliminate them, but i was curious to know if i was feeding or upsetting the tapeworm?

(If the natural approach worked, i wouldn't be seeing this, as i've fed them whole cloves of garlic apiece in the past!)
