Does anyone know the dosage for a muscovy duck? I want to give it orally via a syringe rather than putting it in the water because I figure it would be more effective that way.

@casportpony is our go to lady when it comes to dosage. Hopefully she'll respond soon.

If you want to worm for most worms a duck gets is 0.23 ml per pound orally for *five* consecutive days. This dose will treat roundworms, cecal worms, gapeworms, capillary worms and possibly some species of tapeworms.

How big is you duck?

Well...she gets all her information from google. Do you know the duck's weight? That's the biggest factor in determining the dose

Not true... The dosing info I get comes from the books I own, which are Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook, Veterinary Parasitology Reference Manual, Clinical Avian Medicine. Info also comes from several avian veterinarians I have seen. In addition to that, I have researched dosing info on the web. Put it all together and it's pretty darn solid.

Perhaps you could share the the treatment plan your duck was on when it had gapeworms?

Valbazen is given for just one day at 0.08ml per pound (20mg/kg) to treat for roundworms, cecal worms, capillary worms and possibly some species of tapes. If one needs to treat for gapes, i think three days are needed, but not sure what the dose would be. Valbazen is a more effective wormer than Safeguard, that is usually given for just one day.

Edited to add:
Repeat in ten days

One thing that seems to confuse people is the dosing instructions on the Safeguard bottle... What most people don't understand is that goats, cows and horses get much less medication per pound than birds do, so everyone needs to ignore the directions on the bottle of the goat and cattle product.
