Worming a duck with SafeGuard goat wormer

So sorry... So many people on BYC have lost their birds like this. And not all vets are up to date on what wormers work, many still prescribe ivermectin.

Invermicin is the standard safe de-wormer for birds. There is nothing wrong with prescribing it. It won't treat protozoa however, so I can see how a bird would die from coccidia, which I know is often mistaken for roundworms. This is why self-diagnosis can be misleading.

The standard? Ivermectin is no longer an effective poultry wormer. Sure, it's safe, but not very useful. Safeguard and Valbazen, when given properly, will treat roundworms, cecal worms, capillary worms, gapeworms and possible some species of tapeworms.

Seen many posts from people that have used it, along with their necropsy reports. One that stands out was the one full of roundworms. Another was one that had a severe case of capillary worms confirmed by fecal float.

I had a very sad occurrence . A silkie hen died, and I was devastated. Everyone gets wormed every 4-6 months. I sent her for a necropsy. Not only did she have capillaria (thread worms?), but being they created destruction in the intestine, cocci, e.coli, and enteritis moved in. I could have prevented this! I could cry every day! How??? Capillary worms are hard to deal with and do need that 2nd dose of Valbazen or 2nd round of Safeguard to get them all. I always used one dose thinking I was doing it right. I am so sad about it. I feel like I let her die. I will never forget this.

@seminolewind , thanks for sharing your experience, hopefully others can learn from it. Sadly, there is a "members only" section on a peafowl website that is full of woming misinformation, and many people lose their peafowl every year because of it.

I still feel I let my lil bantam roo down by not knowing the ivermectin wouldn't help him and I dosed him 2X

That is why I rely on K to help me she is so good at calculating me not so much.
